Small dogs

Is board and train good for small dogs?

Small dogs are often treated as too delicate or too cute for real training, and then their owners wonder why the manners never arrive. This page covers what research says about size, how handling and groups work for a small dog in a stay, and the details worth handing over at drop-off.

Size and behavior

Small dogs are as trainable as big ones, and the research points at how they live

McGreevy and colleagues, writing in PLOS ONE in 2013, analyzed owner reports on 8,301 dogs from 49 breeds. As average breed height fell, a long list of behaviors became more common, including owner-directed aggression, begging for food, attention seeking, separation-related problems, fear of other dogs and sensitivity to touch, and lighter breeds were rated more excitable. Trainability stood out as the height-linked trait that did not get worse in shorter breeds.

The authors were careful about cause. They suggested small dogs may be tolerated more, over-indulged or over-protected, or kept indoors with less exercise, and noted that owner reports cannot prove why. The practical reading is encouraging: a small dog can learn as well as a large one when it gets the same clear, consistent training. A stay supplies that consistency for one or two weeks, and home has to keep it going afterward.

Handling

Good handling for a small dog happens at its level and asks before lifting

Touch sensitivity was on the McGreevy list, so handling is where a stay for a small dog starts. Trainers work from the floor, a cot or a low platform rather than bending over the dog, approach from the side rather than reaching down from above, and give a cue before every lift so the dog is never scooped up without warning. A small dog that learns hands arrive predictably stops ducking away from them, which makes grooming, vet visits and ordinary life easier.

Equipment and rewards are scaled down too. Bring the harness and leash your dog already wears, since a stay is no time for new gear, and Dogtown's training never uses prong, choke or shock collars on any dog. Rewards are cut tiny, often from the daily ration, because a small stomach fills quickly across many short sessions. Tell us about allergies or a sensitive stomach at the consult, and pack your dog's own treats if it needs them.

Groups

Daycare integration for a small dog happens in a size-matched group, or not at all

Daycare integration is part of both programs when appropriate, and Dogtown's playgroups of 7 to 10 dogs are matched by size and temperament at the free evaluation. For a small dog that means group time with dogs near its own size, and only once it is ready. A small dog that finds groups overwhelming does enrichment instead: a lick mat, a puzzle game or the sniff room. Some of the most useful group work is quiet, such as settling on a cot while others play nearby.

Large dogs still have a role. In the two-week Advanced program, neutrality work teaches a dog to notice another dog and carry on, and a calm large dog walking past at a distance is ideal practice for a small one that barks at big dogs. The distance closes only as the small dog stays relaxed. Long-held fear of big dogs needs more than two weeks, and Brave & Balanced or Calm & Connected can continue the work with you on the leash.

  • Enrichment instead of a group for dogs that prefer it

The small-dog brief

A one-page brief at drop-off tells the team what your small dog needs

Small dogs often come with small details that matter: the word used before lifting, the spot that must not be touched, the coat worn outdoors, the refusal to toilet on wet grass. Written down, those details reach everyone who handles your dog during the stay instead of depending on one conversation at the desk. Fill in the brief the evening before and hand it over with the food and any medications, and keep a photo of it on your phone.

Afterward, keep the same rules from everyone, including visitors who like to pick the dog up. On Cape Ann, the fenced Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park has separate small-dog and large-dog areas, a useful place to watch big dogs from the safe side of a fence before going any nearer. The Pup Van collects small dogs from Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way, and our board and train page sets out both programs.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is my dog too small for board and train?
Size alone does not rule a dog out; age, health and temperament matter more. Very young or very tiny puppies raise questions about vaccines, warmth and feeding, and the youngest age for a stay is confirmed at the consult. Tiny Tails Puppy School suits pups of 8 to 16 weeks.
My small dog snaps when picked up. Can a stay help?
It can start the work, because handling is taught with consent: a cue, a pause, a supported lift and a reward. Snapping when handled can also mean pain, so see your vet first. If the reaction is strong, a confidence program with you present may come before, or instead of, a stay.
Do small dogs need different rewards?
Smaller ones, mostly. Pieces about the size of a lentil keep calories in check across many repetitions, and part of the daily meal can do the paying. Tell us at the consult about allergies or a sensitive stomach, and pack your dog's own treats if they are the only safe option.
Will my small dog be safe during daycare integration?
Group time happens only in a playgroup matched by size and temperament at the free evaluation, and only when your dog is judged ready. If a group is not right for your dog, ask at the consult how the stay fills those hours. Ask at the consult how your dog's group time will be planned.
Should I pack my small dog's coat?
If your dog wears a coat on cold or wet days at home, pack it, label it and note on the brief when it is used. A nor'easter morning on Cape Ann can be raw, and the people taking your dog out should know whether it refuses to toilet in the rain.
