The fear case
Is board and train good for anxious dogs?
Anxious covers a lot of dogs, and they do not all need the same thing. This page sets out the case for a stay, the cases where it is the wrong tool, and what a survey of thousands of pet dogs found about how anxieties travel together.
The fear case
A stay helps a worried dog only when the worry is mild and the dog recovers fast
For the right dog, a stay offers things that are hard to arrange at home: predictable days, a trainer reading body language all day, and new experiences offered in small doses that the dog can approach or walk away from. The confidence building and structured socialization in the two-week Advanced program are built that way. The dogs it suits hang back at first and then warm up within minutes, take food in new places and shake off a startle quickly.
For a deeply fearful dog, the stay itself is the problem. The American Animal Hospital Association's 2015 behavior guidelines warn that fear is aggravated by forced social exposure and that overexposure can make fearful dogs worse, to the point of a behavioral emergency. A new building, new people and new dogs for a week or two is exposure whether anyone intends it or not. Dogtown's published approach to dogs with special behavioral needs is careful evaluation first, then a plan built to fit.
- Hangs back, then warms up within minutes
- Eats and takes treats in new places
- Sleeps away from home without panic
- Startles but recovers quickly
When to avoid it
Avoid a stay when the anxiety is about being left, about people, or comes with teeth
Panic when left alone is the clearest case: the trigger is the empty house, which a stay never recreates. Severe fear of strangers is another, because every handler in a stay is a stranger at first. Fear that has turned into growling, snapping or lunging needs a behavior program with you present rather than a manners stay. A dog terrified of storms or fireworks can sometimes stay, but only with dates chosen around the noise. Any sudden new anxiety goes to the vet first.
Each case has a better first step. Brave & Balanced builds confidence in young dogs from 4 months, and Calm & Connected suits adolescents, new rescues and adults with stranger concerns or handling sensitivity. Where fear has become reactivity, Focus & Flow runs 6 weeks and 12 sessions and React Less, Relax More runs 8 weeks and 16. Canine Campus trains by day with nights at home, and private sessions start from $94. Our board and train page covers the stays for the dogs they do suit.
| What you see | A stay? | A better first step |
|---|---|---|
| Shy at first, warms up in minutes | Possibly, after the assessment | Foundation or Advanced, paced slowly |
| Panics when left alone | No | A home-based plan; private sessions from $94 |
| Hides from visitors for hours | Not yet | Brave & Balanced or Calm & Connected |
| Growls or snaps when scared | Not as a first step | Focus & Flow or React Less, Relax More |
| Terrified of storms or fireworks | Only with dates chosen around the noise | Your vet, and dates away from July 3 |
| A sudden new anxiety | Not until checked | Your vet first |
The research
Anxieties tend to come in clusters, which is why the consult asks about all of them
Salonen and colleagues surveyed owners of 13,700 Finnish pet dogs about seven anxiety-like traits, publishing in Scientific Reports in 2020. Noise sensitivity was the most common, at 32 percent, and because noise sensitivity and fear were so widespread they were also the most frequent pair. Measured by relative risk, the strongest links ran between hyperactivity and inattention, separation-related behavior and compulsion, and between fear and aggression. Breeds differed widely, which the authors read as a strong genetic contribution.
Three practical points follow. A dog with one anxiety often has another, so the consult asks about noise, people, places, being left and teeth, not only the problem you came in with. Fear and aggression travel together, so a fearful dog that has growled needs a behavior plan rather than a manners stay. And a noise-sensitive dog's dates should steer clear of July 3, Gloucester's fireworks night, and of a stormy forecast where possible. The study used owner questionnaires, not clinical diagnoses.
- Noise: storms, fireworks, trucks
- People: visitors, strangers, handling
- Places: new floors, cars, buildings
- Being left: alone at home or in a room
- Teeth: any growl, snap or bite when scared
If a stay fits
When a stay does fit, it starts slowly and ends with a gradual return home
A stay for a mildly anxious dog begins with settling, not skills. Training waits until the dog eats, rests and explores, sessions stay short, and new things are offered at a distance with retreat always allowed. Dogtown's training is fear- and force-free, so a worried dog is never corrected for being worried, and flooding is not used. The daily update reports eating, rest and recovery as well as skills. Whether visits fit the plan, and how any medication is handled, are confirmed at the consult.
At home, keep the confidence the stay built with quiet routes and few visitors at first. Ravenswood Park, the Trustees' woodland in West Gloucester, welcomes dogs and gives you room to step aside from a passer-by. Steer clear of downtown Gloucester during St. Peter's Fiesta in late June. If your dog found the stay itself hard, tell us; the next step may be Canine Campus or private sessions rather than another stay.
