How far in advance should I book board and train?
How far ahead depends less on a rule than on what still has to happen before your dog's first night. This page explains what sets the shortest possible lead time, how it changes with your starting point and the season, and how to count back from a real date, with a worked Thanksgiving example.
The answer
We confirm open dates when you ask, so the lead time you need is set mostly by the steps before the stay
A board and train cannot be booked the way a daycare day can. Daycare, Academy days and overnight stays go through online booking or the Dogtown app; board and train starts with the training form, because it needs a plan and a quote first. The team replies within one hour on business days, so the first step takes minutes. After that the calendar depends on trainer time, which is why we confirm availability for your exact dates rather than printing a number of weeks.
What you control is everything in front of the stay. The consult with Gabby chooses Foundation or Advanced. The free evaluation runs only on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 AM. Your vet may need to give a booster, and some vaccines take days or weeks to work. And the end of the stay needs you, on a date you can keep, for the go-home lesson. Send the form as soon as your dates look likely.
- Training form: a reply within one hour on business days
- Consult with Gabby, then the quote
- Evaluation: weekday mornings only
- Vaccines and license current through the last night
- A go-home lesson date you can attend
What sets the floor
Vaccines and the license set the shortest possible lead time, and you can check both tonight
Vaccines are the step most likely to stretch a timeline. The AKC's page on the Bordetella vaccine says the intranasal and oral forms typically protect within three to five days, while the injectable form needs two doses several weeks apart and protects only from at least five days after the second. A dog that has never had Bordetella and gets the injectable can therefore need most of a month. If any record expires before the last night of the stay, the vet appointment comes before everything else.
The license is quicker but has its own calendar. Gloucester renewals go through the city's online portal, while a brand-new license goes by mail or the City Hall drop box with the tag mailed back, so a first license takes longer than a renewal. Gloucester licenses are due each April 30, Essex asks for its by March 31, and Manchester-by-the-Sea's run from April 1 to March 31, so a spring stay can straddle a renewal date.

A worked example
Counting back from a go-home lesson on Monday, November 30, 2026
Say you want Advanced to cover a Thanksgiving trip, and the first day you are home and free is Monday, November 30, 2026; Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26. A two-week stay that finishes with pick-up and the lesson that Monday begins around Monday, November 16, inside a weekday drop-off window. The evaluation must come before that, on a weekday morning, and a week or two of slack lets a dog that needs a daycare half day first have one.
Fold the vaccines and paperwork into the same count. If the Bordetella falls due in November, see your vet in October, and sooner still if your vet uses the two-dose injectable. Then send the training form, so the consult, the quote and the dates are settled while there is room to choose. How Advanced's two coaching lessons are spaced is something Gabby explains at the consult, and whether these exact days are open is confirmed when you inquire.
| Step | In this example | Why it sits there |
|---|---|---|
| Pick-up and go-home lesson | Monday, November 30, 2026 | The first day you are home and unhurried |
| Drop-off | Around Monday, November 16 | Two weeks for Advanced, inside a weekday window |
| Evaluation | A weekday morning in early November | It runs 6:30 to 9:30 AM only, so leave slack |
| Vaccines | Checked in October | Injectable Bordetella needs two doses weeks apart |
| Training form | As soon as the trip looks likely | The consult, quote and dates follow from it |
Your starting point
A dog Dogtown already knows needs less lead time than a newcomer, and the season adds to both
Where you start changes the count more than the calendar does. A current daycare or Academy dog with its evaluation done and its records on file mainly needs the consult and a date. A dog new to Dogtown needs the form, the consult, the evaluation and the paperwork. A puppy's vaccine series sets its own timetable, and the youngest age for a stay is confirmed at the consult. A dog arriving from another daycare needs its records gathered and its evaluation booked.
The season sits on top. Summer, when seasonal residents arrive and many local families travel, and the holiday weeks from Thanksgiving to New Year are the stretches to raise first, along with the February and April school vacation weeks. Winter adds a practical risk: a nor'easter can wipe out an evaluation morning, and evaluations happen only on weekdays, so a January or February plan needs more slack than an October one.
- Current Dogtown dog: the consult and a date
- New to Dogtown: form, consult, evaluation, paperwork
- Puppy: the vaccine series sets the pace
- Winter: extra slack for a storm-cancelled evaluation
For your dog
Booking early also gives your dog time to meet the building before its first night
Lead time is not only about getting a slot. A dog that did its evaluation weeks ahead, and perhaps a half day of daycare at $33 since, walks into drop-off knowing the smells, the floors and a few faces. A dog evaluated the week before meets everything at once. Early booking also leaves room to change course if the evaluation suggests a different program, such as Canine Campus with nights at home, without losing cover for the trip.
If the dates you want are taken, an ordinary overnight stay at $78 a night can cover the trip and the training can follow. The Pup Van carries daycare and overnight guests for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, which makes a half day before the stay easy to fit. Our board and train page describes both programs, and the booking and availability page explains how dates are held.

Training, and the stays around it
If board and train dates are full, an overnight stay can cover the trip and the training can follow later.
