Do you serve Boston for board and train?

A city family's real question is how many times they will make the drive, and when. This page counts the trips for each program, matches them to our windows, covers the Boston license and walks through drop-off morning.

Counting trips

Plan three round trips for Foundation and four for Advanced, roughly two hours each by our estimate

Every trip has a job, and only some of them combine. The evaluation is a weekday morning, between 6:30 and 9:30 AM. Drop-off follows on the agreed day. Go-home day joins pick-up to the first lesson, since the handover happens with you on the leash. Advanced adds a second scheduled coaching lesson, which means one more drive. At about an hour each way outside rush hour, by our estimate, that is around six hours of driving for Foundation and eight for Advanced.

Ask how the consult is held. If it is in person, add a trip, or pair it with the evaluation morning if the team can fit both. The table sets out each drive and what it asks of you. As a total, the travel is modest beside a season of weekly classes, but it lands on particular days, so put every one of them in the calendar before the stay begins.

Choosing windows

Use the noon hour or a Saturday morning for the drives you can choose, and leave early for the evaluation

Only the evaluation is tied to a commuting hour, so give that drive the slack. For the rest you pick the window. Weekdays offer 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM; Saturdays 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM. The weekday noon hour sits between the two rush periods, and a Saturday morning suits parents who work in the city during the week.

Sunday is open only to overnight guests, 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM, and whether a board and train can start or end then is confirmed at the consult. For go-home day, pick the window you can stay through without watching the clock. A lesson squeezed in before the evening drive back down Route 128 loses the part that matters most, which is you practicing while the trainer watches.

  • Evaluation: a weekday morning, so leave early
  • Drop-off: the weekday noon hour or a Saturday morning
  • Go-home day: a window you can stay through
  • Sunday: ask whether it can be used for a stay

Boston paperwork

Bring a current Boston license, which the city requires for every dog over six months, renewed before April 1

Dogtown asks every overnight dog for Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file and a current city or town license, and for a Boston dog that means the City of Boston license. At the time of writing, the city's licensing page says dogs older than six months must be licensed before April 1 each year, at $15 for a spayed or neutered dog and $30 for an intact one, with a $50 fine for an unlicensed dog.

Boston asks for a copy of the current rabies certificate and proof of spay or neuter, and takes applications online, by mail or in person; Animal Care and Control is at 1010 Massachusetts Ave. Check the license against the stay dates. A booking that runs from late March into April crosses the renewal deadline, so renew in March. Massachusetts law also requires a commercial boarding or training kennel to keep license records for every dog it cares for.

  • A Boston license: before April 1, $15 altered or $30 intact
  • A rabies certificate copy and spay or neuter proof
  • DHPP and Bordetella records from your vet
  • A renewed license if the stay crosses April 1

Drop-off morning

Pack the night before, keep your dog restrained in the car, and arrive early in the window

An hour in the car is easy to underestimate with a dog that rarely leaves the city. Pack the evening before: the usual food bagged by meal for every day of the stay plus a spare, each medication in its labeled container with a written sheet, one comfort item, and the paperwork. Walk your dog before loading it, then keep it in a secured crate or a harness with a seat-belt tether, out of the front seat.

Aim to reach Eastern Ave early in the window rather than near its close, so a slow stretch on Route 128 costs you nothing. Hand the food, medications and sheet to the front desk, confirm the update format and your local contact, and keep the goodbye brief and calm. The daily updates begin on arrival day, so the first report on how your dog is settling comes through the Dogtown app before you are home.

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can the Pup Van collect my dog in Boston?
The Pup Van runs in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea at $10 each way, and Boston lies outside those towns. Ask on the training form about transport from the city, which is priced on request. Plan to drive yourself on go-home day in any case, since the lesson needs you there.
Could we use the commuter rail for drop-off?
For a calm dog, possibly. The Rockport branch runs from North Station to Gloucester. The MBTA's rider rules allow larger dogs on a leash only off-peak, keep them off at weekday peak hours and off the seats, and let small dogs in a secure carrier ride at any time. You would still need a ride from Gloucester station to Eastern Ave.
Our Boston license has lapsed. Can we still book?
Book the consult, but renew before the evaluation, because a current license is on the list for every overnight dog. Boston's page says renewals are due before April 1 and can be done online, with your dog's license number. Bring the new license and the rabies certificate to the evaluation morning.
Can the coaching lessons happen in Boston?
The coaching lessons take place at Dogtown, with you handling your own dog, so plan them as drives to Gloucester. If a second trip for Advanced would be hard to fit, raise it at the consult before choosing the program; Foundation needs one lesson trip fewer, and Gabby will say whether it suits your dog.
