Board and train for Newburyport, MA dog owners

Newburyport's leash rule leaves little room: off your own property, a dog must be held firmly on a leash, except in three off-leash areas at set hours. Add downtown sidewalks, busy state park trails and Plum Island's dates, and a Newburyport dog needs calm manners on a short leash plus a recall for the few places it can run. Here is how a stay works on both, the drive, the city's rules and what follows.

Why a stay

Advanced was built for the neutrality a firm-leash city asks for; Foundation suits younger dogs

A Newburyport dog spends most of its outdoor life on a leash and close to people, so the skills that matter are neutrality, impulse control and a loose leash on a crowded sidewalk. That is the core of Advanced, our two-week program for adolescents: everything in Foundation plus distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality, confidence building and structured socialization, with two scheduled coaching lessons. Foundation, one week, covers basic obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control and household manners for puppies and young dogs.

The off-leash areas ask for something different. The city requires owners to leash their dogs at any command from a police or animal control officer, and to remove a dog that shows aggression toward people, dogs or wildlife. A dog that comes away from play on the first call, and accepts the leash going back on without a chase, is a dog that can use those hours. Every program here is fear- and force-free: rewards, clear markers and no prong, choke or shock collars.

  • Advanced, 2 weeks: neutrality, distraction proofing, outings
  • Foundation, 1 week: leash skills, place, stay, recall
  • Nights in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring
  • Daily updates, then coaching for you at the end

The drive

Newburyport to Eastern Ave runs through Newbury, Rowley, Ipswich and Essex before Route 128

From downtown, take Route 1A south through Newbury and Rowley into Ipswich, turn east on Route 133 and follow it through Essex to Route 128 in West Gloucester, then ride 128 to its end and Eastern Avenue to number 210. That is about 45 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate, and longer on summer weekends when Route 133 is busy. Leave early for the free evaluation, which runs on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment and lasts a few supervised hours.

For Newburyport, which is outside the Pup Van towns, ask us about pick-up. The van's $10 each-way routes stay in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. Plan the drop-off and pick-up inside our windows, 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM on weekdays, or 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM on Saturdays, and leave time at pick-up for the go-home lesson. Send the training form to start; we reply within one hour on business days.

Practice spots

Maudslay for leash work, Cashman Park for the early off-leash hour, and Plum Island only on its dates

Maudslay State Park, at 74 Curzon Mill Road, has 16 miles of trails through fields, forests and other scenic and historic areas, and DCR requires dogs to stay on a leash there. It opens sunrise to sunset, bans swimming and charges a daily parking fee all year, $5 for a Massachusetts plate and $20 for others. Those trails suit the leash work from the stay: a loose leash past other walkers, a sit while a bike goes by, a settle on the grass while you rest.

Cashman Park allows dogs off leash from 7:30 to 9 AM and from 4 to 7 PM, and Moseley Woods and March's Hill from dawn to dusk, with playgrounds, courts, fields and other listed spots excluded and no loose dogs on March's Hill while children are sledding. Plum Island is stricter: no dogs, even leashed, from May 15 to September 15, and on a leash only for the rest of the year. The city asks owners to keep dogs away from nesting birds, seals and other marine animals.

  • Leashed on the way into and out of an off-leash area
  • No more than two dogs off leash per owner
  • One leash per dog in your hand, and bags in your pocket
  • Never off leash: puppies under four months, females in season
  • $50 for breaking any off-leash area rule

City rules

Section 3-26 wants a firm leash off your property, and the City Clerk wants the license by April 1

Newburyport's code, section 3-26, says no one may keep a dog in the city, outside the owner's or keeper's property, that is not held firmly on a leash. The fine is $50 for a first offense, $75 for a second and $100 for each one after. Section 3-2 adds that you may not appear with a dog on a sidewalk, street or other public area without the means to pick up after it, on the same $50, $75 and $100 scale.

Licenses come from the City Clerk's Office at City Hall, 60 Pleasant Street, and are due by April 1 each year. At the time of writing the fee is $10 for a spayed or neutered dog and $15 for one that is not, and the clerk cannot process an application without a vet's rabies certificate showing its expiration date. Apply online and upload the documents, or in person if necessary, and the tag comes by mail. Renewals registered from June 1 carry a late fee, and the code adds $10, $20 and $30 per dog for a dog still unlicensed after September 1, October 1 and November 1.

After pick-up

Coaching happens at Dogtown, and the practice moves from your street to Maudslay to Cashman Park

At pick-up, a trainer shows you each skill with your dog, then hands you the leash and coaches your timing and rewards until your dog answers you. Foundation ends with one go-home lesson; Advanced has two scheduled coaching lessons, which gives a Newburyport family a second chance to ask about the sidewalk or the off-leash hour. Home visits in Newburyport are not on our published menu, so ask the front desk; otherwise further help means private sessions at Dogtown, from $94, or Canine Campus if your address can be covered for pick-up.

Use the order below for the first weeks, changing one thing at a time; if a step goes badly, repeat the one before rather than pushing on. Message the front desk through the Dogtown app if leash manners slip in town, and bring your notes to the next lesson. Our board and train page sets out what each program covers.

  1. 01

Your own block at a quiet hour: a loose leash, sits at the curb, rewards for checking in

  2. 02

A busier downtown street, at a distance from the crowd where your dog can still take food

  3. 03

Maudslay on a leash, passing other walkers and dogs on the wide paths

  4. 04

Cashman Park in the 7:30 to 9 AM hour on a long line, with recalls away from other dogs

  5. 05

Off leash only when your dog comes on the first call and lets you clip the leash back on

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Will board and train get my dog ready for Newburyport's off-leash areas?
It builds the parts that matter: a recall away from play, a calm stay and acceptance of the leash going back on, which the city can demand at any officer's command. Whether your dog is ready is a judgment you make after weeks of practice at home. Start on a long line in Cashman Park's morning hour, and unclip only when the recall holds every time.
How long is the drive from Newburyport to Dogtown for drop-off?
About 45 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate: Route 1A south to Ipswich, Route 133 east through Essex and Route 128 to its end, then Eastern Avenue. Summer weekend traffic on Route 133 adds time. Plan an early start for the evaluation, which runs between 6:30 and 9:30 AM on weekdays.
What is the fine for walking my dog off leash in Newburyport?
Outside the three designated areas, the code requires a dog to be held firmly on a leash off its owner's property, with fines of $50 for a first offense, $75 for a second and $100 after that. Inside Cashman Park, Moseley Woods and March's Hill, breaking an off-leash area rule costs $50.
Can I renew my Newburyport license before the stay?
Yes, online: upload the vet's rabies certificate with the application, pay, and the city mails the tag. Licenses are due by April 1, at $10 or $15 at the time of writing. We need the current license and Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records before the free evaluation, so renew early if the stay is close.
Does Dogtown offer pick-up from Newburyport?
The Pup Van's $10 each-way routes cover Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, and Newburyport is not among them. Raise pick-up on the training form and the front desk will answer it. Otherwise, plan to drive down for the evaluation, the drop-off and each coaching lesson.
