Board and train for Amesbury, MA dog owners
From Amesbury, Dogtown is a drive you make a handful of times rather than every week, and that is where a stay fits: the daily training happens while your dog sleeps here. This page counts the trips, maps the route, names Amesbury places to practice under the city's six-foot leash rule, sets out the license dates at the City Clerk, and explains what follows the stay.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Route 1 south to Newbury, Route 1A to Ipswich, Route 133 east through Essex, Route 128 to its end and Eastern Avenue: about 55 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- Outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- Dog licensing
- City Clerk's Office (the city's pages list two street addresses, so call 978-388-8100): $10 spayed or neutered, $15 unaltered; due March 31, then a $5 late fee per dog (amesburyma.gov)
- The beach rule
- Lake Gardner, 79 High Street: no dogs on the beach from Memorial Day to Columbus Day; leashed on the trails at all times and on the beach off-season

Why a stay
A stay suits the distance from Amesbury: the training is daily, and your driving is not
Weekly lessons from Amesbury would mean a long round trip every week; a stay puts the repetitions on our side of the drive. Foundation gives one week to basic obedience and leash skills, place, stay and recall, impulse control, and crate and household manners. Advanced gives two weeks and adds distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality, confidence building and structured socialization. Your dog sleeps in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring, plays in a matched group of 7 to 10 when ready, and you get an update every day.
Count the trips before you choose. Expect a short assessment with Gabby to pick the program, the free evaluation on a weekday morning, the drop-off, and the pick-up with its go-home lesson; Advanced adds a second scheduled coaching lesson. Ask the front desk how those visits can be grouped. If the drive makes even that hard, say so on the training form, and we will tell you plainly whether a stay is the right fit. The method does not change with distance: fear- and force-free, positive reinforcement, no prong, choke or shock collars.
- Assessment with Gabby: chooses Foundation or Advanced
- Free evaluation: a weekday, 6:30 to 9:30 AM
- Drop-off and pick-up inside our windows
- Coaching: one lesson for Foundation, two for Advanced
The drive
Route 1 south, Route 1A, Route 133 and Route 128 link Amesbury to Eastern Ave
Take Route 1 south through Newburyport into Newbury, then Route 1A south through Rowley to Ipswich. Turn east on Route 133 through Essex to Route 128 in West Gloucester, and follow 128 to its end and Eastern Avenue to number 210: about 55 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. Interstate 95 south to Route 128 north stays on highway the whole way but runs longer, at about 60 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate.
The Pup Van's $10 each-way routes are set for Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so Amesbury lies outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up. For the evaluation, aim to arrive within the weekday window of 6:30 to 9:30 AM. Drop-off and pick-up run 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM on weekdays, and 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM on Saturdays; the midday window keeps an Amesbury driver clear of both commutes.
Practice spots
Lake Gardner's trails and the Amesbury Town Forest are leash-on practice, and long lines belong on private land
Lake Gardner, at 79 High Street, keeps dogs off its beach from Memorial Day to Columbus Day, per the Amesbury Health Department, and wants them leashed on the trails at all times and on the beach in the off-season. It opens dawn to dusk unless posted otherwise. The leashed trail suits the first weeks home: walk the loose leash past families and other dogs, and stop for a sit whenever the leash starts to tighten.
The Amesbury Town Forest, owned and managed by the city, has 5.2 miles of marked trails off Kimball Road, with parking along the road opposite the Acadia Condos, and Essex County Greenbelt lists dog walking among its uses. The city's six-foot leash rule applies off your own property, so a long line for recall practice belongs on your own land, or on someone else's with their permission, as the by-law allows. Greenbelt's Whittier Hill Reservation, 0.6 mile of moderate trail off Whitcher Court, adds a short hill session.
- 01
Clip on a leash of six feet or less for every public walk, as the by-law requires
- 02
Start recall on a long line in your own yard, or a neighbor's with permission
- 03
Walk Lake Gardner's trails on the leash, rewarding slack and check-ins
- 04
Move to the Town Forest trails once the leash stays loose at the lake
- 05
Try the Lake Gardner beach in the off-season last, still leashed, for new footing and smells
City rules
Amesbury's by-law: a leash of six feet or less off your property, and a license by March 31
The animal control by-laws in Amesbury's 1990 recompilation, revised through 2006, say a dog off its owner's premises must be restrained by a chain or leash no longer than six feet, unless it is on another person's premises with their knowledge and permission. No dog may roam the land of another without permission, or any part of the public highway. Owners must pick up after their dogs on sidewalks, streets, parks and other public areas and carry a suitable device to do it, and an unspayed female found roaming off the leash while in season costs $50.
Licenses come from the City Clerk's Office, but the city's own pages give two different street addresses for it since the city began moving City Hall to Market Square, so call the clerk at 978-388-8100 before you mail or drop off anything. Every dog six months and older must be licensed by March 31 each year, and a dog that has just turned six months or just moved to town is licensed whenever that happens. At the time of writing the fee is $10 for a spayed or neutered dog and $15 for one that is not, with a $5 late fee after March 31. Apply online, in person or by mail, with proof of rabies vaccination and of spay or neuter.
| Amesbury by-law item | At the time of writing |
|---|---|
| Leash off your own property | Chain or leash of six feet or less |
| Dog at large, first offense in a year | $10 |
| Each later offense that year | $25 |
| Pound pick-up charge | $10, then $25, then $30, plus $10 a day |
| Female in season roaming off the leash | $50 |
| License paid after March 31 | $5 late fee per dog |
After pick-up
Plan the coaching trips as carefully as the stay, because the follow-up is in Gloucester
The go-home lesson happens when you collect your dog: a trainer shows you each skill, then coaches you through it with your dog on your leash. Foundation includes one lesson; Advanced includes two scheduled coaching lessons, so settle the second date at the assessment and put it in the calendar along with the drop-off. Bring everyone who will walk the dog at Lake Gardner or in the Town Forest, since a cue only works for the people who learned it.
Dogtown does not send trainers to Amesbury. If a skill fades, private sessions at our building start from $94, and Canine Campus, with pick-up and drop-off, runs as Freshman (2 weeks), Dean's List (4 weeks) or Graduate (6 weeks); ask whether your Amesbury address is covered before you count on it. Use the Dogtown app to message the front desk, and see our board and train page for everything each stay includes.
- Go-home lesson at pick-up, at 210 Eastern Ave
- Advanced: book the second coaching date early
- Private sessions at Dogtown from $94
- Canine Campus: coverage depends on your address
