Board and train for Marblehead, MA dog owners
From May 1 to October 1, Marblehead's bylaw closes most town beaches, parks and playing fields to dogs, and off leash is legal only in private yards and the town dog park. Timing a stay and choosing where to practice afterward both start from that calendar.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Route 114 into Salem, Route 1A north into Beverly, Route 128 north to its end in Gloucester, then Eastern Avenue: about 40 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- No. Marblehead is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- Dog licensing
- Town Clerk, Abbot Hall, 188 Washington Street: $20 spayed or neutered, $25 intact on the 2026 application; by mail or drop box; $50 a month fine per dog from February 1
- The beach rule
- Town beaches, parks, playgrounds and athletic areas closed to dogs May 1 to October 1, except Riverhead Beach, Chandler Hovey Park, Crocker Park, Fort Sewall, Fountain Park, Upper Seaside Park and the dog park (bylaw section 13-11)
- A trail we know
- Marblehead Dog Park, Reynolds Playground off Lime Street: sunrise to sunset, small and large sections, off leash inside, six months and older
- Dogtown dogs from here

Why a stay
A stay can be timed around Marblehead's summer closure, when a dog's usual walks shrink
Between May 1 and October 1 a Marblehead dog loses most town beaches, parks and fields, so its outings narrow to sidewalks, the parks the bylaw exempts and the dog park. Those are the months when manners on a leash, a settle at home and a reliable come matter most. Foundation, the one-week program, builds basic obedience and leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control and household manners. Advanced, two weeks, adds distraction proofing, neutrality, confidence building and real-world outings.
You might book a stay for a week you are away, or for the stretch before the beaches reopen, so your dog comes home ready for off-season walks. Either way, it sleeps at Dogtown, trains daily with our team, joins a matched playgroup when ready, and you get an update each day in the Dogtown app. The programs are fear- and force-free and built on positive reinforcement. Ask about dates early; we confirm them at the consult.
- Leash manners for the sidewalks and exempt parks
- A recall that holds at the dog park
- A settle at home through the closed months
- Daily updates in the Dogtown app while you are away
The drive
Allow about 40 minutes from Marblehead: Route 114, Route 1A, then Route 128 north
Take Route 114 out of Marblehead into Salem, then Route 1A north across the river into Beverly. Join Route 128 north there and stay on it through Manchester-by-the-Sea until it ends in Gloucester, where Eastern Avenue runs on to number 210. That is about 40 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate, and traffic through Salem can add to it. For a stay, the drive matters on drop-off day, on pick-up day and for each coaching lesson.
Marblehead is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up. The van's $10 each-way price applies in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea only. If you drive, our windows are weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, and Saturdays 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM; the front desk confirms which suit a training stay. Book the free evaluation for a weekday morning; it runs from 6:30 to 9:30 by appointment.
Practice in Marblehead
The town dog park and Riverhead Beach stay open to dogs all year, so start the practice there
The Marblehead Dog Park, at Reynolds Playground off Lime Street with street parking, is the one public place in town where a dog may run off leash. Hours run from sunrise to sunset, with one side for small or sedentary dogs and the other for large or active ones. Dogs enter and leave on a leash and must be licensed with the tag on the collar, vaccinated and at least six months old; females in heat, injured dogs and dogs with open wounds stay home, and owners stay with their dogs and clean up.
Riverhead Beach, on the harbor across the causeway from Devereux, with a small beach and the town boat ramp, is one of the places the bylaw exempts from the summer closure, along with Chandler Hovey Park, Crocker Park, Fort Sewall, Fountain Park and Upper Seaside Park. Off leash is not allowed there, so use these spots for loose-leash walking and calm settles while people, boats and other dogs go by. Mass Audubon's Marblehead Neck Wildlife Sanctuary prohibits dog walking all year.
| Place | Dogs allowed? | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Marblehead Dog Park, off Lime Street | Yes, sunrise to sunset; off leash inside | A recall out of play; a calm leashed entry and exit |
| Riverhead Beach and the exempt parks | Yes, all year, on a leash | Loose-leash walking and settles near boats and people |
| Devereux and other town beaches, parks and fields | Not between May 1 and October 1; leashed otherwise | Leashed walks once the closure ends |
| Marblehead Neck Wildlife Sanctuary | No; dog walking is prohibited | A walk without the dog |
| Public cemeteries | No, at any time of year | Nothing; route around them |
Marblehead rules
Marblehead keeps dogs leashed off private property and licenses them each January at $20 or $25
Off leash is legal in Marblehead only in a private yard and the Lime Street dog park; everywhere else a dog stays on a leash. Section 13-11 of the town bylaws closes public beaches, athletic areas, playgrounds and parks to dogs between May 1 and October 1, apart from the exempt places, and bars dogs from public cemeteries all year. Breaking either rule costs $25 the first time in a calendar year and $50 the second. Changes to these rules were proposed in January 2025 and then dropped, so check the bylaw again before each season.
The Town Clerk at Abbot Hall, 188 Washington Street, licenses Marblehead dogs. The 2026 application lists $20 for a spayed or neutered dog with a certificate and $25 for an intact dog or one without it, accepted by mail or through the Abbot Hall drop box, and it warns of a $50 a month fine per dog starting February 1. Questions go to the clerk at 781-631-0528. Dogtown asks for that license, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records, at the free evaluation.
- Off leash: private yards and the Lime Street dog park only
- May 1 to October 1: most beaches, parks and fields closed to dogs
- Public cemeteries: no dogs at any time
- License: $20 or $25; a $50 monthly fine per dog from February 1
After the stay
Plan the drive into the coaching, and keep the leash on when the beaches reopen
Foundation closes with one go-home lesson and Advanced with two scheduled coaching lessons, all at Eastern Ave, so the 40-minute drive belongs in the plan. You watch the trainer work each cue with your dog, then take the leash yourself while the trainer adjusts your timing and rewards. Tell us about your dog's real routes, the dog park, Riverhead and your own street, so the order of practice you take home fits them.
Private sessions start from $94 if something slips once you are home. Canine Campus, two, four or six weeks of day training with your dog home each night, includes pick-up and drop-off; from Marblehead, ask whether we can reach your address before you choose it. When the town beaches reopen to dogs, keep the leash on there too, since off leash in Marblehead is reserved for the dog park and your yard.
- 01
Run each cue at home for the first few days
- 02
Walk Riverhead or an exempt park at a quiet hour
- 03
Visit the dog park and leave before your dog tires
- 04
Practice the recall in your own yard on a long line
- 05
Message the front desk in the Dogtown app if a skill slips
