Board and train for Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA dog owners

Manchester's bylaw frames the leash rule around the person: a dog is running at large unless it is on a leash or under the direct voice command of someone able to control it. A board and train is one way to make the second half of that sentence true of your dog. Here is the trip to Gloucester, two places to practice, the license and the bylaw, and what follows the stay.

Why train

Manchester allows voice command only from someone able to control the dog, and that control is trainable

The usual reason a Manchester family looks at board and train is the gap between what the bylaw allows and what the dog does. Voice command is lawful in town only when the person can actually control the dog. A dog that drifts after a scent or ignores the second call is running at large in the bylaw's own terms, however friendly it is. One or two weeks of daily practice at Dogtown narrow that gap, and the coaching at the end hands the skill to you.

Foundation, one week, suits puppies, young dogs and missing manners: obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control, and crate and household manners. Advanced, two weeks, is built for adolescents who need reliability in the real world, adding distraction proofing, outings, neutrality and confidence building. Gabriella Pope runs both without force, and both mix daycare integration and enrichment into the day, so a dog is not drilling from morning to night.

  • Recall, stay and impulse control in both programs
  • Distraction proofing and neutrality in the two-week stay
  • Positive reinforcement only; no prong, choke or shock collars
  • Daily updates, then coaching for you at Dogtown

Getting here

From Manchester, School Street to Route 128 north gets you to Eastern Ave in about 20 minutes

Plan on about 20 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. From the center of town, School Street runs north to Route 128. Take 128 north into Gloucester, through the two rotaries, to the end of the highway at Eastern Avenue, then turn toward Rockport; 210 Eastern Ave is about a mile on. Route 127 along the shore through Magnolia also gets you here, but it is the slower road on a summer day.

Manchester-by-the-Sea is inside the Pup Van's area, which also takes in Rockport, Gloucester and Essex, and the fare is $10 each way. The van rides along with daycare, Academy and overnight bookings; whether it can take a board-and-train dog in on day one is something to ask the front desk. The last day is a trip to make yourself, because the coaching at the end happens at Eastern Ave and is meant for you.

Practice spots

Practice at Singing Beach from October 15 to mid-April and at Coolidge Reservation on a leash

Singing Beach is a cool-season classroom. The town's beach page allows dogs from October 15 to April 15 in its dog rules and to April 14 in its general rules, while the general bylaw closes Town beaches from April 15 through October 14, so treat April 14 as the last safe day. The beach page also describes the dog your training is aiming at: a collar with identification, licensed and vaccinated, two dogs per person at most, under effective verbal control, and always in sight when off leash. Fines run $10 for a first offense and $25 after that.

Coolidge Reservation, a Trustees property on Summer Street, Route 127, is free and open daily from sunrise to sunset, with parking for 10 cars. Dogs are not allowed on Gray (Magnolia) Beach, and dog walking is not permitted on the Ocean Lawn. The Trustees' dog guidelines do not list Coolidge among their off-leash properties, so bring a leash. Use the visit for loose-leash walking and a clean turn on cue at the edges where dogs must stop.

  1. 01

Check the date: dogs from October 15, and off the sand by mid-April

  2. 02

Clip a long line to a harness at the car and walk onto the sand with it slack

  3. 03

Let your dog sniff, then call once and reward generously at your feet

  4. 04

Release your dog back to the beach, so coming to you never ends the fun

  5. 05

Add one distraction at a time: a distant dog, then gulls, then a busier hour

  6. 06

Pick up after your dog and leave before it tires

Town rules

Manchester licenses run April 1 to March 31: $20 neutered, $25 not, with late fees after April 1

Manchester's license year runs from April 1 through March 31. At the time of writing a license costs $20 for a spayed or neutered dog and $25 for one that is not, and the town adds $10 a month, up to $30, if a dog is not registered by April 1. Register online through the town's payment portal or with the Town Clerk at Town Hall, 10 Central Street. The bylaw asks you to present a current rabies certificate, signed and dated by a veterinarian, when you license.

The leash rule sits in the same bylaw, Article X, Section 28: off its owner's premises, a dog must be on a leash or under the direct voice command of a person able to control it. Dogs may not go onto Town playgrounds and parks, cemeteries, or Town Hall, school or library grounds, and a dog must never become a public nuisance. Waste comes home with you or goes into a proper bin. Bring the Manchester license to our free evaluation with the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records.

  • License year April 1 to March 31: $20 or $25
  • Late: $10 a month, capped at $30
  • Leash, or direct voice command by someone able to control the dog
  • No dogs in Town parks, playgrounds or cemeteries

After the stay

After the stay: coaching in Gloucester, then private sessions from $94 or Canine Campus

Coaching closes every stay, and it takes place at Dogtown. After Foundation there is one go-home lesson; Advanced includes two scheduled coaching lessons. The trainer shows you each cue, hand signal and reward, then has you run them while correcting your timing. Gabby sets the dates at the consult, so put them in the calendar before drop-off and plan on staying for the full session rather than squeezing it into a commute.

Afterward, private sessions start from $94 for any skill that needs a second look, such as a recall that held in October and wobbled in March. Canine Campus suits a dog that needs weeks more structure but should sleep at home: Freshman runs about 10 training and adventure days over two weeks, Dean's List about 20 sessions over four, Graduate about 30 over six, with pick-up and drop-off and daily reports. Ask whether Campus pick-up covers your Manchester street.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can my dog walk off leash in Manchester-by-the-Sea after board and train?
The bylaw allows a dog off its owner's premises on a leash or under the direct voice command of a person able to control it. Training builds that control; it does not decide for you when your dog has it. Keep a long line on until your dog comes on the first call around real distractions, and check the town bylaw for the parks, playgrounds and cemeteries where dogs are not allowed.
How long is the drive from Manchester to Dogtown?
About 20 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. Take School Street to Route 128 north, follow it to the highway's end at Eastern Avenue in Gloucester, and continue toward Rockport to number 210. The shore road through Magnolia works too, but it is slower in summer.
When can we practice at Singing Beach after the stay?
From October 15 until mid-April. The town's Singing Beach page allows dogs through April 15 in one rule and April 14 in another, and the general bylaw closes Town beaches from April 15, so April 14 is the safe last day, and a dog finishing a summer stay practices on streets and trails first. Start on a long line when the beach reopens, pick up after your dog, and keep the license and rabies tags on its collar.
Do we need a Manchester license for the stay?
Yes, a current one from your own town. Manchester licenses cost $20 for a spayed or neutered dog and $25 otherwise, run April 1 to March 31, and come from the Town Clerk or the town's online portal. Bring it to the free evaluation, held on weekday mornings from 6:30 to 9:30 AM, with the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records.
Will the trainer come to our house in Manchester?
Plan on coming to Dogtown instead. The go-home lesson, and both coaching lessons in Advanced, take place at 210 Eastern Ave. If a problem only shows up at your own door, say so at the consult, and Gabby will talk through the options, such as a private session at Dogtown from $94.
