Board and train for Hamilton, MA dog owners

Hamilton's bylaw is strict on paper, and its best-known walk is an exception: The Trustees list the Appleton Farms Grass Rides among their off-leash properties. A dog that walks well on a leash in town and stays with you on the Grass Rides is a fair goal for a board and train. Here is the route, two practice spots, the license and the leash rule, and what comes after.

Why train

Hamilton asks for two skills: a leash in town and real control on the Grass Rides

A Hamilton dog needs two kinds of manners. The town's animal control bylaw does not let a dog be at large; off its owner's premises, or another person's with their consent, it must be restrained by a leash of appropriate length. The 2026 license application repeats the point in plainer words: control your dog at all times and clean up its waste. Most of a Hamilton dog's walks are leashed, so loose-leash walking comes first.

The second skill is for The Trustees' land. Their dog guidelines list the Appleton Farms Grass Rides, Hamilton, as an off-leash property, except in grassland nesting habitat from April 1 to August 15 and at the entrance and parking areas. Off leash there works only with a recall stronger than a deer scent. Foundation, one week, builds recall, stay and impulse control on top of leash skills; Advanced, two weeks, proofs them against distraction with real-world outings.

  • Town bylaw: a leash of appropriate length off your premises
  • Grass Rides: listed off leash by The Trustees
  • Nesting habitat excluded from off-leash use, April 1 to August 15
  • Entrance and parking areas: leash on

Getting here

From Hamilton, Route 22, Route 133 and Route 128 reach Eastern Ave in about 25 minutes

Expect about 25 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. From Hamilton center, Bridge Street and Sagamore Street lead to Route 22, which runs into Essex as Essex Street, Western Avenue and Martin Street and meets Route 133 in the town center. Turn east on 133, join Route 128 north in West Gloucester, and take it through the two rotaries to its end at Eastern Avenue; number 210 is about a mile toward Rockport.

Hamilton is outside the Pup Van towns, although the route passes through Essex, which is one of them. Ask us about pick-up and the front desk will say what is possible for your road. Whatever happens on the first day, keep the last one for yourself: the coaching that ends the stay takes place at Dogtown, and everyone in the house who walks the dog should be there to learn the cues.

Practice spots

Practice on the Appleton Farms Grass Rides and in Chebacco Woods, under each one's rules

The Trustees welcome dogs on the 259-acre wooded section of Appleton Farms known as the Grass Rides, reached from the Highland Street parking lot; dog walking is allowed there only, never on the farmstead side. The property is open sunrise to sunset, members park free and nonmembers pay a parking fee. Clip the leash on in the lot, since entrances and parking areas are excluded from off-leash walking, and read the signs for nesting closures in spring and summer.

Chebacco Woods, owned jointly by Hamilton and Manchester-by-the-Sea, is open dawn to dusk all year, with limited parking on Chebacco Road. The committee that manages it says the Hamilton leash law applies and that every dog, on a leash or off, must be under strict control. Dogs may not swim in any of the ponds, which makes the woods a natural leave-it lesson: water in sight, and your dog choosing you instead of a swim.

  1. 01

Park on Chebacco Road and clip the leash on before the car door opens

  2. 02

Walk the first stretch asking only for slack, and reward every check-in

  3. 03

Stop where a pond comes into view, at a distance your dog can handle, and pay calm looks at you

  4. 04

Move closer a few steps at a time; turn away if your dog fixes on the water

  5. 05

Finish with an easy sit, a calm walk out and a tick check at the car

Town rules

Hamilton licenses run April 1 to March 31: $15 or $20, with late fees from June 1

The Hamilton Town Clerk licenses every dog six months or older for a year running April 1 to March 31. The 2026 application lists $15 for a spayed or neutered dog and $20 for an intact dog, and a resident aged 70 or older on January 1 pays nothing for the first dog. Renewing on or after June 1 adds a $25 late fee, and on or after August 1 a $50 late fee; a dog registered for the first time pays none.

License online through City Hall Systems, uploading the rabies certificate and proof of spay or neuter, mail the application with a check to PO Box 429, Hamilton, MA 01936, or go to the Clerk's office. In October the clerk's page said the office was moving back to Town Hall, 577 Bay Road, from Monday, October 5, and asked residents to call 978-468-5570, extension 3, for an appointment. Bring the license to our free evaluation with the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records.

  • License year: April 1 to March 31
  • $15 spayed or neutered, $20 intact
  • Late renewals: $25 from June 1, $50 from August 1
  • First dog free for residents 70 or older on January 1

After the stay

After the stay: coaching at Eastern Ave, then Canine Campus or private sessions

The stay ends with coaching at Dogtown, not a quick handover. Foundation has one go-home lesson and Advanced two scheduled coaching lessons, where you watch each skill, then run it yourself while the trainer adjusts your timing and rewards. Ask Gabby at the consult how the lessons fit around pick-up, and bring the people who will take the dog to the Grass Rides, since off-leash trust depends on whoever is holding the treats.

If the recall wobbles once you are home, private sessions start from $94. Canine Campus offers longer day training while the dog sleeps at home: Freshman two weeks, Dean's List four, Graduate six, with pick-up and drop-off, real-world exposure, daily reports and an end-of-program lesson; ask us whether Campus pick-up covers your Hamilton address. Graduate is built for more complex cases, such as reactivity and significant leash struggles.

Training, and the programs that follow a Hamilton stay

Board and train is one of the Dogtown Professional Training programs. Dogtown Academy days add a trainer's session to play for a dog that has come home.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can board and train prepare my dog for off-leash walks on the Grass Rides?
It can build the skills, and you finish the job. Foundation works on recall, stay and impulse control; Advanced adds distraction proofing and real-world outings. The Trustees list the Grass Rides as off leash except in nesting habitat from April 1 to August 15 and at entrances and parking areas. Practice on a long line there before you unclip.
How long is the drive from Hamilton to Dogtown?
Plan on about 25 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate, from the center of town. Take Route 22 into Essex, Route 133 east into West Gloucester, then Route 128 north to its end at Eastern Avenue and on toward Rockport to number 210. Summer traffic through Essex center can slow the middle of the trip.
Is Hamilton a Pup Van town?
No. Hamilton is outside the Pup Van towns, so ask us about pick-up for your road before booking. The $10 each-way fare is set for Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. Send your Hamilton address with the training form, and the front desk will say what is possible. Drive the final day yourself, for the coaching at Dogtown.
Can my dog swim at Chebacco Woods after the stay?
No. The committee that manages Chebacco Woods says dogs may not swim in any of its ponds, and that the Hamilton leash law applies, with every dog under strict control whether it wears a leash or not. Use the ponds as a leave-it exercise instead: reward your dog for looking at you while the water is in view.
What does Hamilton charge for a late dog license?
On the 2026 application, a renewal on or after June 1 adds a $25 late fee to the $15 or $20 license, and one on or after August 1 adds $50. First-time registrations carry no late fee. Bring the current license to our free evaluation, held on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 AM.
