Long workdays

Board and train for busy professionals

A full workweek leaves little room for a Tuesday-night class, and a commute from Cape Ann can stretch a working day to twelve hours. A training stay concentrates the teaching into a block, but the habit still has to live in your house. This page is about fitting both into a professional's week.

The commuter schedule

The stay needs four appointments from you, and only the lesson needs real time

Count the appointments rather than the weeks. The training form takes minutes and gets a reply within one hour on business days. The consult with Gabriella Pope sets the program. The free evaluation runs on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30, the same hours as the morning train, so book it on a remote-work day or a late-start morning. Drop-off fits the 6:30 AM weekday opening. The go-home lesson is the appointment to protect: pick a time you can stay for, not the last minutes of the 4 to 6:30 PM window after a delayed train.

From Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, ask whether the Pup Van, $10 each way, can bring your dog in at the start. During the program the daily updates arrive while you work, and the front desk passes questions on to the training team. Rail commuters leave the dog at home in any case, since the MBTA's rider rules bar larger dogs from trains during weekday peak hours; our guide to commuting to Boston with a dog at home covers the rest of that week.

  • Training form: minutes, sent from your desk
  • Evaluation: a remote-work morning between 6:30 and 9:30
  • Drop-off: inside the weekday morning window
  • Go-home lesson: a time you can stay for, not a rushed pick-up

Canine Campus

Canine Campus is the alternative when you want your dog home every night

Canine Campus is our hybrid day training. Your dog spends training and adventure days with us, then sleeps at home, and every plan includes pick-up and drop-off, enrichment, walks, real-world exposure, daycare integration when appropriate, daily reports, homework and an end-of-program lesson. Freshman runs two weeks with about 10 training and adventure days, Dean's List four weeks with about 20 sessions and Graduate six weeks with about 30. For a professional the trade is simple: Campus asks for a few minutes of homework most evenings, while a stay asks for almost nothing until the lesson.

Choose Campus if your dog frets on nights away, if you want to see progress each evening, or if the problem shows up at home, where the homework can reach it. Choose a stay if you travel for work anyway, if your evenings are genuinely unavailable for a week or two, or if a deadline means the skills must be in place soon. Ask which addresses Campus pick-up reaches before you decide, because transport is part of the appeal.

Ten minutes a day

Maintenance takes about ten minutes a day, in short sessions tied to things you already do

Skills fade when they stop paying, not when the stay ends, so maintenance means keeping the cues in daily use. Ten minutes covers most of it if the minutes are spread out and attached to fixed points in your day: before breakfast, on the way to the car, during dinner, before bed. Short sessions are easier to keep up than one long weekend block, and each one can end while the dog is still keen. The AKC's three Ds still apply at home: raise duration, distance or distraction one at a time, never all three on a rushed morning.

Use the routine you already have. The dog sits and waits before its bowl goes down, walks to the car on a loose leash, holds place while you eat and gets a few recalls before bed. None of that needs a slot in your calendar. On weekends, give ten minutes to the same cues somewhere new, an empty school field or a quiet street, so they keep traveling. If a cue starts slipping, drop back to an easier version for a few days rather than finding time you do not have.

  1. 01

Morning, about 3 minutes: sit and a short stay before the bowl goes down

  2. 02

Leaving, about 2 minutes: a wait at the door and a loose leash to the car

  3. 03

Evening, about 3 minutes: place on the mat during your dinner

  4. 04

Before bed, about 2 minutes: three recalls in the house or yard, each paid well

  5. 05

Weekend: ten minutes of the same cues somewhere new

Not for

If the dog spends eleven hours alone, training will not fix the day; care will

Board and train teaches manners. It does not change a dog's day if that day is eleven hours alone in a quiet house, and a bored, under-exercised dog can wear good training down quickly. If that is your week, the answer is care alongside training: a full day of daycare at $42, a 10-pack at $380 or the unlimited membership at $700 a month for a five-day commuter, or a midday solo walk from home, 30 minutes for $35, if we cover your address. A dog that panics when left alone needs a separation plan at home, not a stay.

Some professionals find their schedule suits a lighter route. Dogtown Academy, $89 for a full day or $69 for a half, puts a training session with our trainer into each day your dog attends, which works well for a dog already coming in on office days. Private sessions from $94 target one problem, such as pulling to the car or barking at the door. The consult tells you which of these, if any, should come before or after a stay.

  • Alone most of the day: daycare or a midday walk first
  • Panic when left alone: a separation plan, not a stay
  • Already in daycare on office days: Academy days may be enough

Following along

Daily updates you can read at lunch, and a follow-up that fits around the office

The daily update is written for people who are not there. Read it for a trend across the week: which cues are firming up, what the dog found hard, how it is eating and sleeping. Reply with a question when one occurs to you, and the front desk passes it on. Whether updates include photos or video is confirmed when you book. Before pick-up, skim the whole week once more, so the lesson can start from your dog's hardest moments rather than its easiest.

Afterward, a weekly rhythm keeps the skills without taking over your evenings. One Academy day a week, booked on a remote-work day, gives your dog a training session with our trainer while you are on calls. Advanced's second coaching lesson is the natural checkpoint for whatever slipped during the first workweek home. If your commute changes, with a new job, a new office or more days in Boston, tell us; the maintenance plan should change with it.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

I work five days a week. Can I still make the go-home lesson?
Yes, if you plan it like a meeting. Ask at the consult whether the lesson can fall on a Saturday, when windows run 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM; otherwise take a weekday morning off or start late. Bring whoever walks the dog on your office days, because they need the same cues.
Is ten minutes a day really enough to keep the training?
For skills your dog already has, short daily sessions tied to routines keep the cues in use, which is most of what maintenance means. A new skill, a cue that keeps slipping or a dog in adolescence needs more. If ten minutes is not holding, the plan from the lesson or a private session from $94 will show where to add time.
Canine Campus or board and train for a working household?
Campus if your dog should sleep at home and you can spare a few minutes of homework most evenings; it runs 2, 4 or 6 weeks with pick-up and drop-off included. Board and train if your evenings are unavailable for a week or two or you are traveling anyway. The assessment weighs your dog's needs alongside your calendar.
Can my dog go to daycare on office days after the stay?
Yes, once it has passed the free evaluation, which every stay requires anyway. A full day is $42 and runs from the 6:30 AM weekday opening to the 6:30 PM close. Tell the handlers which cues your dog learned, so the playgroup staff can use the same words at drop-off and pick-up.
What if a work trip moves my pick-up date?
Message the front desk as soon as you know. Extensions, late pick-up and any extra nights are terms confirmed at booking rather than published, so raise them at the consult if your work travel is unpredictable. Naming a local contact who can collect the dog is worth doing before the stay starts.
