Chewing and counter surfing
Board and train for destructive chewing and counter surfing
A dog that eats a sofa cushion or a loaf of bread is usually doing something that has worked before. This page explains why both habits stick, what a stay teaches against them and the part only your kitchen can do.
Why it sticks
Chewing and counter surfing pay off every time they work, which is why they stick
The AKC calls counter surfing self-rewarding: once a dog finds food on a counter, even a forgotten crust is enough to keep it checking. Chewing has more causes. The ASPCA lists teething, puppies exploring, boredom, distress when left alone, hunger in dogs on restricted diets, and frustration, such as a dog that cannot reach a squirrel behind a fence. Each cause has a different fix, so the first job is working out which one you are dealing with.
Age matters here. The AKC's teething timeline has baby teeth shedding from about 12 to 16 weeks and all puppy teeth gone by about six months, leaving roughly 42 adult teeth, and the ASPCA says the intensified chewing phase usually ends by six months. A dog of eight months or a year that still destroys things is rarely chewing for sore gums. It is more often bored, under-exercised or rehearsing a habit that teething started.
- Teething: under about six months, chews everything within reach
- Boredom: worse on quiet days, eases after exercise and enrichment
- Distress when alone: damage at doors and windows, with pacing or howling
- Hunger: targets food smells, common on restricted diets
- Frustration: chews when it cannot reach something exciting
The method
Leave it and a settle on a mat are the two skills the stay builds
Leave it is taught the way the AKC sets it out. A treat goes on the floor under the handler's hand; when the dog stops trying to get it, the handler marks and rewards from the other hand, never with the floor treat. The hand lifts a little at a time, then the exercise moves to standing, with a foot over the food and the dog on a leash, and only then does the cue word arrive. The dog learns that backing off pays better than grabbing.
The settle answers counter surfing directly. A dog lying on a mat at the edge of a kitchen cannot also be standing at the counter, which trainers call reinforcing an incompatible behavior, and the AKC suggests exactly this kind of place near the kitchen. The mat is built up in short sessions, then practiced while food is out and people move around. Drop it, taught as a trade, covers anything that is already in the dog's mouth.
- 01
Cover a treat on the floor with your hand and wait
- 02
When the dog stops pushing, mark and reward from your other hand
- 03
Lift your hand a little, covering the treat again if the dog moves in
- 04
Stand, leash the dog and cover the food with your foot instead
- 05
Add the words leave it just before the food drops
- 06
Practice with harder items and new rooms, one change at a time
Enrichment prescription
An enrichment prescription gives chewing a time, a place and an object
During the stay the enrichment add-ons double as a test: a frozen Kong for $6, a lick mat for $5, a puzzle game for $7 and the sniff room for $7. Some dogs are chewers, some lickers, some shredders and some sniffers, and the daily updates will show which item held your dog's attention longest and how calm it was afterward. That observation becomes a prescription: the right object, offered at the time of day the damage usually happens.
The ASPCA's advice fills in the rest: rotate toys every couple of days so they stay interesting, supervise edible chews and keep the dog apart from other dogs while it has one, and never offer cooked bones, which can splinter. Timing matters as much as the object. A frozen Kong handed over just before you start cooking does more for counter surfing than one given after the bread has gone.
- Before cooking: a frozen Kong on the mat at the kitchen edge
- After a walk: a lick mat to help the dog settle
- Guests arriving: a long chew behind a gate
- Quiet afternoons: a puzzle feeder or scattered kibble to sniff out
Management at home
Management at home does the part no stay can: it takes the reward away
The AKC's advice on counter surfing starts with storage: food in airtight containers in cabinets or the fridge, nothing near the counter edge while you cook, and the same rule from everyone in the house. When nobody can watch, a gate, a crate or a closed door keeps the dog out of the kitchen. The ASPCA adds puppy-proofing for chewers: valuables and tempting objects out of reach until the habit is under control.
Here is the honest limit of a week. A Foundation stay can make leave it reliable with a trainer, build a settle on a mat and find the enrichment your dog prefers. It cannot erase what your counters have paid out before, and a dog that once found a sandwich will check again. Punishment after the fact does not help either; the ASPCA notes a dog cannot connect it with chewing done hours or even minutes earlier.
- Food stored in airtight containers, off the counters
- A gate across the kitchen doorway when nobody is watching
- Shoes, cushions and children's toys out of reach
- One rule for every person in the house
The right follow-on
Chewing only when left alone is a different problem, and the follow-on depends on which you have
If the damage happens only when the dog is alone, starts soon after you leave and gathers at doors and windows, the cause may be separation distress, and our separation anxiety page explains why a stay rarely fixes it. If it is boredom in an adolescent, more structure in the week does more than any single program: daycare at $42 a day, or Dogtown Academy at $89 full and $69 half, with a training session every day.
For continued coaching, private sessions start from $94, and Calm & Connected suits adolescents whose impulse control is the real gap. Before St. Peter's Fiesta in late June, when Gloucester houses fill with guests and platters, run the mat and the leave it daily. If your dog swallows something worrying, call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center; Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn is open 24 hours.
