Board and train for Boxford, MA dog owners
Boxford is one of the few towns around here that says outright it has no leash law, which leaves recall and good judgment to do the job a leash does elsewhere. This page explains what a stay in Gloucester can build for that, the drive, the limits the town code does set, and two Greenbelt properties for practice.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Topsfield Road to I-95 south, Route 1 and Route 62 east to Route 128, then 128 north to its end in Gloucester and Eastern Avenue; about 40 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- No: Boxford is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- Dog licensing
- Town Clerk: $20 spayed or neutered, $25 intact, calendar-year license, bought online; $25 late fee per dog after January 31; newcomers within 31 days (boxfordma.gov)
- The beach rule
- No town leash law; hounds leashed or chained off the owner's land from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise; Animal Control can order restraint in schools, parks and recreation areas (code chapter 52)
- A trail we know
- Elmlea Woods, Captain Cashin Way, and Carter Fields, Carter Field Road (Essex County Greenbelt): dog walking listed; carry a leash, carry out the waste; sunrise to sunset (ecga.org)

Why a stay
With no leash law in Boxford, a dependable recall matters most, and a stay gives it a strong start
The town's leash law page has a one-line answer: Boxford does not have a leash law. In practice your dog's response to its name, and your sense of when to clip the leash back on, do the work a bylaw does in neighboring towns. Recall is part of Foundation from the first week, alongside place, stay, impulse control and leash skills. Advanced, two weeks, proofs those cues against distraction and adds real-world outings, neutrality and confidence building.
We will be direct about limits. A one- or two-week stay gives a recall solid footing, but no stay makes a young dog reliable off leash around deer, horses or another dog by itself; that comes from your practice afterward, starting on a long line. The go-home lessons show you how. Gabriella Pope, our Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, leads the program, every method is fear- and force-free, and our board and train page sets out both programs in full.
Boxford to Gloucester
I-95 south to Route 62, then Route 128 north: about 40 minutes to Eastern Ave
The quickest line from Boxford center uses four roads: Topsfield Road out to Interstate 95, I-95 south for a few miles, Route 1 and then Route 62 east through Danvers, and Route 128 north to its end in Gloucester. From there Eastern Avenue brings you to number 210. Expect about 40 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate, and plan the same run for the evaluation, the drop-off and each go-home lesson.
The Pup Van keeps to Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, where it runs at $10 each way, so a Boxford family should ask us about pick-up. If you drive, fit the trips to our windows. Weekday drop-off and pick-up run 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, and the free evaluation takes a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, by appointment.
- Topsfield Road, I-95 south, Route 1 and Route 62, Route 128 north

Greenbelt practice
Elmlea Woods and Carter Fields give a Boxford dog room to practice recall on a long line
Elmlea Woods, conserved by Essex County Greenbelt in 2023, has 42 acres and 1.5 miles of trail and connects to the 57-acre Boxford Common. Most walkers start from the Boxford Common lot; Greenbelt's directions follow Cashin Way past the second soccer field to the far, paved lot. Greenbelt lists horseback riding, mountain biking and trail running there as well as dog walking, so a recall practiced at Elmlea has to hold up around riders and runners.
Carter Fields, off Carter Field Road, is quieter: 85 acres and half a mile of trail, with parking next to the playing field. Greenbelt says the wetland once held a rookery of up to 90 pairs of herons, which have since moved on, and the viewing platform now looks over a successional wetland. A short trail with a platform at the end is a good place to practice a stay while you look out.
On all Greenbelt land dogs are welcome unless a property page says otherwise. Carry a leash, leash an aggressive dog, keep the noise down, never leave a dog unattended, prevent digging, and pick up and carry out the waste. Every property is open sunrise to sunset. Those asks sit well with long-line work: a line trailing behind your dog is still a leash within reach the moment a rider appears, and a dog that comes back on the first call never needs to be shouted for across a quiet wood.
- 01
Clip a long line to a harness, not a collar, and let it trail
- 02
Call once, brightly, when your dog is already turning toward you
- 03
Reward at your feet, then release your dog back to sniffing
- 04
Add distance first, then mild distractions, one at a time
- 05
Leave the line off only when your dog answers every call on it, and leash up near riders, other dogs or the road
What the code says
Boxford still sets a few limits: hounds at night, Animal Control orders and a January 31 license
No leash law does not mean no rules. Chapter 52 of the town code bars the owner of a hound from letting it run without a chain or leash between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise, anywhere the owner does not own or occupy. The Animal Control Officer can order a dog restrained from running at large in schools, school playgrounds, parks and public recreational areas, or when it is an annoyance, dangerous or causing damage. Ignoring an order earns a warning the first time in a calendar year, then $25, then $50.
Licenses come from the Town Clerk and run for the calendar year: $20 for a spayed or neutered dog and $25 for an intact dog, and they can be bought online. Every dog must be licensed on reaching six months, a newcomer within 31 days of moving to town, and the canine bylaw adds a $25 late fee per dog after January 31. We check the current Boxford license at the free evaluation, along with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records.
- No town leash law, in Boxford's own words
- Hounds: chain or leash off your land from dusk to dawn
- Animal Control orders: a warning, then $25, then $50
- License: $20 or $25; $25 late fee after January 31
The handover
The go-home lessons are at Dogtown; the recall practice is yours, on Boxford's trails
Collection includes a go-home lesson at 210 Eastern Ave: you watch our trainer call your dog, then do it yourself while the trainer coaches your voice, timing and reward. Advanced adds two scheduled coaching lessons, which are the right moment to report how the long-line work is going at Elmlea or Carter Fields, and to raise any spot where the recall keeps failing.
For more, private sessions start from $94, and Canine Citizen Academy prepares adolescents and adults for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test, whose ten items include coming when called. Canine Campus, two, four or six weeks of day training with nights at home, includes pick-up and drop-off; ask whether a Boxford road is covered before counting on it. All of it takes place at our Gloucester building.
