Will my dog be alone at night?
This is the question behind every first stay, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a soothing one. Here is what we can state as fact about nights at Dogtown, what the evening looks like from the dog's side, and how to make the first one uneventful.
The short version
Own suite, quiet room, watched all night
Three things are true of every night. Your dog sleeps in its own suite, not loose in a group and not in a crate stacked among strangers. The suite is in the overnight area, away from the play floors, with comfortable bedding. And the suites are monitored 24 hours a day, so a dog that is restless, sick or barking is noticed, not discovered in the morning. That is the standard for the $78 nightly rate, not an upgrade.
What we will not do on this page is describe a staffing rota we have not published, because a number written here would be a guess. If you want to know exactly who is watching and how on a given night, ask the front desk when you book; they will tell you plainly. It is a fair question and it gets asked most weeks at 210 Eastern Ave.

How it works at Dogtown
The evening is the end of a long day, which is the point
The reason our overnight guests sleep is the daycare day before it. A dog that has spent hours in a playgroup of 7 to 10 matched dogs, out on the turf when the weather holds and on the indoor floors when a nor'easter is pushing rain across Cape Ann, has used its body and its brain. When the day guests leave in the last weekday window, 4 to 6:30 PM, the building gets quieter, and the overnight guests move to their suites.
From there the evening is simple: dinner from the pre-portioned food you brought, a comfort item from home on the bedding, a settle. Deluxe guests get a stuffed Kong or Toppl to work on. Then a monitored night. In the morning the suite opens and the guest goes back to its group. The rhythm repeats for as many nights as you booked.

What it means for your dog
Alone is a human word; a dog reads scent, sound and routine
A puppy on its first night away is not asking whether a person is in the room. It is asking whether the place smells known, whether the sounds are the ones it heard all day, and whether the routine it just learned holds. That is why we suggest a few daycare days before a first stay: the evening then becomes a longer version of a good day, and the suite a den, not an exile. Bring the crate blanket from home.
Adults who know Dogtown treat the suite as they treat the back seat of the car. Seniors and anxious dogs are the ones to plan for. Tell us in advance about noise sensitivity, night-time bathroom needs or separation anxiety, and we will place and prepare the suite accordingly; the sibling answer on separation anxiety during a stay goes into the detail. On July 3, when the Gloucester fireworks go up over the harbor, a suite inside a 10,000 square foot building is, for many dogs, quieter than home.

Monitoring exists so that something unusual gets acted on
The point of a monitored night is a response, not a camera. If a dog is unwell overnight, our team acts on what they see, and your dog's file tells them who to call. The Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn is a 24-hour emergency hospital, and the City of Gloucester publishes a list of local emergency veterinary offices. Put your vet's details and a reachable phone number on your dog's file before a stay, and tell us who to call if you are on a flight.
