When should puppy training start?
The old advice was to wait until the shots were done and the puppy was six months old. The adult dogs we meet at Level 3 are often the ones who waited. Here is the timing, program by program.
The short version
The short version: start at 8 weeks, because the window that matters closes around 16
Between roughly 3 and 16 weeks a puppy's brain is deciding what is normal. People in hats, vacuum cleaners, the smell of low tide: whatever it meets calmly in those weeks it tends to accept for life, and whatever it never meets it tends to treat with suspicion later. Training in this period is less about sit and more about a puppy who is easy to live with and easy to take places.
That is why Dogtown's puppy programs are organized by age rather than by skill. Tiny Tails Puppy School is the 8 to 16 week program. AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy accepts puppies from 8 weeks to 6 months and runs a fixed 6 weeks and 12 sessions. From 4 months the choice is Bright Beginnings for manners and socialization or Brave & Balanced for a pup who is already worried. Adolescents, rescues and adults go to Calm & Connected.

The vaccine question
Waiting for the last shot costs more than it protects, if the exposure is done carefully
Puppies receive their core vaccines as a series over the first months, and the final dose usually lands as the socialization window is closing. Waiting for it means the most valuable weeks pass in a kitchen. The answer is not to skip the vet's advice but to choose exposure your vet is comfortable with: clean floors, known and vaccinated adult dogs, people who come to the puppy, and no dog parks until the series is complete.

A puppy's training here begins with a message, not a class. Send the contact form with the date of birth and what has come up so far, and the training team replies within one hour on business days. Gabby then runs a short assessment to confirm Tiny Tails and the block: 4 weeks for a confident pup who needs structure, 6 as the usual, 8 for a shy or very young one. Sessions start from $94.
Tiny Tails works on handling, settle, a short recall, crate comfort, taking food gently and deliberate exposure, with a few minutes of homework each day. Around 4 months the road forks. A steady pup moves to Bright Beginnings or AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy; a pup that hides, freezes or refuses food outside moves to Brave & Balanced. Every block ends with go-home lessons, and how much sticks depends on the puppy and the practice in your kitchen.

What it means for your puppy: three Cape Ann arrivals, three different starts
The 9-week-old from a breeder in Essex starts Tiny Tails in its first fortnight home, while everything is new and nothing is yet frightening. The 14-week-old adopted through Cape Ann Animal Aid starts the same week it arrives, but the first sessions lean toward settling and trust, because a rescue puppy's history is usually a guess. Both need a Gloucester license from the City Clerk at 9 Dale Ave, $20 for a spayed or neutered dog, before daycare days can follow.
The 5-month-old whose owner was told to wait has missed Tiny Tails and has not missed the point. Bright Beginnings takes it from 4 months for recall, leash skills, focus and impulse control, and AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy is open until 6 months. More of the work is now undoing than building, but a late-summer start still finishes as Gloucester's beaches reopen to dogs on October 1, at the time of writing, with an empty shore for a first recall on a long line.
