Pet transport
What is a pet taxi?
The phrase covers everything from a neighbor with a van to national pet relocation companies. What matters to a Cape Ann owner is narrower: where the ride goes, who handles the dog and what it costs. Here is how the general idea compares with the Pup Van.
The short version
A pet taxi is a paid ride for your pet, and the name covers several different services
At its simplest, a pet taxi is transport you pay for so your dog or cat gets somewhere without you driving. Some services are dedicated pet taxis that take bookings to any address. Some are car services that accept pets riding with their owners. Some, like the Pup Van, are shuttles run by a daycare or boarding business for its own customers. Long-distance pet transport, for moves across the country, is a separate trade again.
The differences matter more than the name. A general pet taxi may take your dog to the vet while you meet it there; a facility shuttle usually runs only between your door and the facility. Some take any animal that fits a carrier; others only carry dogs they have already assessed. Ask any service where it goes, who handles the animal, how it rides and what happens if nobody is home.
- Dedicated pet taxis: rides to many destinations
- Car services that accept pets riding with their owners
- Facility shuttles such as the Pup Van: your door to the facility and back
- Long-distance pet transport: a separate trade
The Pup Van
The Pup Van is a shuttle between your door and 210 Eastern Ave
Dogtown's Pup Van is pick-up and drop-off for dogs already spending the day or the night with us. You book daycare, a Dogtown Academy day or an overnight stay online, in the Dogtown app or by phone, and add pick-up, drop-off or both. Each leg costs $10 in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so a round trip is $20 on top of the day. Families in other North Shore towns can ask for a price for their address.
Because the van delivers to a playgroup, every rider has completed the free evaluation first, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file and a current city license. The window for your street is confirmed by the front desk when you book, because the route is built from that day's stops. A bath or full groom scheduled into a daycare day comes along on the same ride, so your dog gets home clean as well as tired.
| Trip | A typical pet taxi | The Pup Van |
|---|---|---|
| To daycare or boarding | Usually, to any facility | Yes, to Dogtown, added to a daycare, Academy or overnight booking |
| To the groomer | Often | A groom booked into a daycare day rides along; for groom-only trips, ask us |
| To the vet | Often | Not part of the published service; ask us |
| Price | Set by each company | $10 each way in four Cape Ann towns; elsewhere, ask |
| Assessment before the first ride | Varies | Yes, the free evaluation |
How a ride works
A Pup Van day runs from a leashed handover at your door to a report card in the app
On the morning, your dog is leashed and waiting at the door on a secure collar or harness, with pre-portioned food and any medication if it is staying the night. A member of our team takes the leash, and your dog rides to Eastern Ave and joins its matched playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs. In the afternoon the van brings it home, and the day's report card is waiting in the Dogtown app. Sunday overnight-stay windows are 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM; ask whether the van covers your address that day.
The van does not change any of the building's rules. The free evaluation is still the first step, and the day itself still runs on Dogtown's windows and schedule once your dog arrives. What the van removes is the drive, which on Cape Ann is often the hardest part of the day. The pick-up and drop-off page lists the towns and the rates in one place.

Who it helps
Commuters, Sunday travelers and one-car households lean on it most
The van earns its $10 most clearly for commuters. The MBTA does not allow pet dogs too big for a carrier on its trains during weekday peak hours, so a commuter from Rockport or Gloucester on an early train cannot bring the dog along, and a detour to Eastern Ave first may not fit. With the van, whoever is home in the morning hands over the leash at the door, and nobody has to drive to the building before the train.
Overnight stays are the other big use. Sunday drop-off and pick-up happen only in the 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM windows, which is awkward for a family flying home that afternoon, so ask whether the van can make that leg instead. It also helps households with one car, and dogs that settle better with a handler than in the family's back seat.

- Families returning on a Sunday
- Households with one car
- Dogs that ride better with a handler
Choosing any pet taxi
Whichever ride you use, ask about restraint, temperature and who is responsible
A ride is only as good as the way the animal travels. Ask whether dogs ride in fastened crates or on harness tethers, whether animals from different homes are kept apart, and how the vehicle is heated and cooled. Massachusetts General Laws chapter 140, section 174F, bars confining an animal in a vehicle in a way that threatens its health through extreme heat or cold, and any service should be able to explain how it avoids that during stops.
Then ask who is responsible for your dog from door to door, what the service does if nobody answers, and what insurance covers animals in its care. For the Pup Van, the front desk answers those questions when you add the van to a booking, and our answer on how dogs are secured in the van lists the details worth asking about.
- A fastened crate or a harness tether, never loose
- Animals from different homes kept apart
- Heated and cooled, including during stops
- A clear answer on who is responsible from door to door
