What happens if I'm late for pick-up?
Everyone on Cape Ann has had the evening where Route 128 stops at the Beverly bridge, the Rockport train sits outside Salem, or a fishing boat comes in late. This page tells you what happens to your dog while you are stuck, what we need from you, and how to make it a non-event.
The short version
Your dog stays with a handler, you call, and the front desk sorts the rest
The weekday day ends at 6:30 PM and the Saturday day at 6 PM, and those are also the ends of the last pick-up windows. If you are running behind, the single most useful thing you can do is phone 978 491-5922 or message the front desk in the Dogtown app while you are still on the road. A dog whose owner has called is a dog whose handler knows the plan.
Until you arrive, your dog is with a member of staff, not shut in a room alone. What happens after the doors close is where we stop guessing on your behalf. Late fees and cut-off times are not written into the policies on this site, so we do not print a number, and the front desk will tell you exactly how the evening is handled when you call.
- Call 978 491-5922 or message in the app as soon as you know
- Weekday close 6:30 PM, Saturday close 6 PM
- A handler stays with your dog while you are on the way
- Ask the front desk how a late collection is charged; no fee is quoted here
How it works at Dogtown
The sequence on a late evening, from your call to the door
When your call comes in, the front desk notes the time you expect and tells your dog's handler. The last dogs of the day are usually already off the floors and resting, with water, in a quiet area of the building, so a late dog is not dragged through another play block; it waits, calmly, with a person it knows. The lights stay on and the door stays answered until the plan is settled.
If your estimate slips past what the evening allows, the front desk will talk through the alternatives with you: someone else you authorize collecting, the Pup Van if it is still running its route, or an overnight stay. An overnight suite is $78 a night and the dog simply rejoins its playgroup in the morning, which for many dogs is less stressful than a frantic 7 PM handover in a dark lot.

Making it a non-event
Two names on file and one honest look at your commute prevent most late nights
Give the front desk a second authorized person at your first visit: a partner, a neighbor in Riverdale, a parent in Rockport. That one line on your file turns most emergencies into a text message. Tell us, too, what your commute really is. Someone leaving Boston on the 5:15 PM Rockport train is cutting it fine for a 6:30 PM close on a good day, and the MBTA's own peak restrictions mean the dog cannot ride home with you either; leashed dogs are barred from the commuter rail between 4 and 7 PM.
If the late run is a weekly fact rather than a surprise, stop fighting it. The Pup Van returns dogs to homes in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way, and the unlimited membership at $700 a month makes the occasional unplanned overnight easier to absorb because daycare itself is already covered. Both are booked in the app.
- A second authorized pick-up person on your file
- A realistic commute: the 6:30 PM close, not the 6:30 PM train
- The Pup Van at $10 each way for the predictable late nights
- An overnight suite at $78 as the planned fallback, not a panic
What it means for your dog
Most dogs handle a late owner better than the owner does
An adult regular who is still in the building at 6:40 PM is usually asleep. Nine hours of matched play, water breaks and rest do their work, and a handler sitting nearby is company enough. The dog who struggles is the new one: a puppy in its first week, or a rescue still learning that pick-up always comes. For those dogs, being early matters more than for anyone else, and an overnight suite before the dog is ready for one is not the answer; a friend or the van is.
Seniors need a different thought. A fourteen-year-old who has been at daycare since 7 AM is tired in a way that a late collection makes worse, and an old dog's bladder does not care about Route 128. If your senior comes to daycare, book the half day or plan a 4 PM collection, and keep the emergency contact current. Then a late night is an inconvenience for you and nothing at all for the dog.
