Grooming etiquette
Should I tip the groomer?
Few owners feel sure about this one, and the moment at the counter is awkward when you are not. This page covers what is typical, when people give more, how the year-end tip works and how to find out how it works at Dogtown, without telling you what to do with your own money.
The short version
Customary, not required, and always within your budget
Groomers are service professionals, and the usual customs for tipping a service apply to them. We do not print a percentage for a per-visit tip. What the AKC's advice on choosing a groomer does say is that the cost of a groom varies with the dog's size and coat type, and that a groomer can quote a rate once they have assessed your dog. Nobody should go beyond their budget, a point the Emily Post Institute makes plainly in its own guidance on seasonal tips.
Optional cuts both ways. A tip is a thank-you for good work, not a fee, and the price you were quoted at check-in is the price of the groom. If money is tight, a sincere word to the groomer, a rebooked appointment and an honest review are worth a great deal too. What matters most is that your dog was handled kindly and came home looking the way you asked.
- Per visit: optional, and within your budget
- Optional: the confirmed price is the price of the groom
- Year-end: up to one session's cost, or a gift
- Ask the front desk how tips are accepted
At Dogtown
We do not publish a tipping policy, so the front desk tells you how it works
Dogtown's published grooming prices are set by size: bath only $55, $65, $75 or $85, with $95 for an extra-large dog with long hair, and full service $75, $85, $110 or $120. Add-ons are priced separately, from teeth brushing at $10 to anal gland expression at $40, and the final figure is confirmed at check-in after the groomer assesses the coat. None of those published figures mentions a tip, and the menu says nothing about gratuities either way.
So ask. Whether tips are accepted, whether one can be added at checkout or in the Dogtown app, and whether it reaches the groomer who worked on your dog are all questions for the front desk at 978 491-5922, and the answer comes from the studio rather than from this page. If you would rather say thank-you another way, tell the groomer at pick-up what you liked about the cut.
When people give more
Hard grooms take longer, and some of that work is already priced
The AKC points out that some dogs take longer to groom than others, and that extra time is where the effort in a hard groom goes. At Dogtown some of that effort already has its own line on the menu: de-matting is $15 per 20 minutes, and the behavior or handling surcharge, $20, covers extra time and hands for a dog that needs slower, more careful handling. Those charges pay for the work itself; anything on top remains your call.
Other moments owners like to mark: a first groom that went better than expected, a puppy taught to enjoy the table, a senior handled gently through a long dry, a groom fitted in before family arrived for a holiday. A tip is not the only way to say so. Rebooking at pick-up takes $5 off the next visit and keeps your dog on a regular schedule, which makes every groom after it easier.
| Situation | Tipping | Already priced at Dogtown |
|---|---|---|
| Routine bath or full service | Optional, within your budget | Bath $55 to $95, full service $75 to $120 |
| Matted coat | Optional; the extra time is billed | De-matting $15 per 20 minutes |
| Nervous or difficult dog | Optional; the extra care is billed | $20 behavior or handling surcharge |
| Regular groomer, end of year | Up to one session's cost, or a gift | Nothing extra on the menu |
Holidays
The year-end tip is up to the cost of one session, or a gift, for a groomer you see regularly
Seasonal tipping is its own custom. The Emily Post Institute's holiday tipping guide lists pet groomers at up to the cost of one session, or a gift, and says any tip or gift should come with a short handwritten note of appreciation. It also says you may skip an end-of-year tip if you already tip at each visit. For a doodle on a six-week schedule, that guidance points to the price of one full service, at most.
On Cape Ann the end of the year is when many households want a fresh groom before Thanksgiving and Christmas visitors, and the off-season beach months bring sandy, salty coats through the studio. A card at the last groom of December is a kind way to mark a year of appointments. Rebook at the same time and the next visit is $5 less, which keeps your dog on schedule through the winter.
- Up to one session's cost, or a gift
- A short handwritten note with it
- Optional if you already tip at each visit
- Rebook at the same time for $5 off
At the counter
Settle the practical details at the front desk before you leave
The practical details are the ones to sort at the counter. Ask whether a tip can be added to a card payment or in the app, or whether cash is simpler, and whether it goes to the person who groomed your dog. If two people worked on a difficult dog, you can ask that it be shared. Keep the conversation with the front desk, where the answers live.
Getting to the studio is the other half of the visit. Grooming needs no evaluation and is booked online, in the Dogtown app or by phone; a dog that comes to daycare can have a groom added to a booked day, with drop-off from 6:30 AM on weekdays. The Pup Van runs at $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea on daycare and overnight days.
