Booking a groom

Do you offer express grooming?

Express is a salon term rather than a standard one, and it means different things at different studios. Owners of anxious, elderly and impatient dogs ask about it because they want less time in the building. Here is what the word usually covers, which dogs it suits, and how a groom inside a Dogtown daycare day answers the same need in another way.

What express means

Express usually means one groomer, start to finish, with no waiting in between

There is no industry definition, but the pattern is consistent. In an express appointment the dog arrives at a set time and goes straight onto the table, one groomer works on it from bath to finish without handing it between stations, and the owner collects as soon as it is done. The aim is less time in a busy room, so the dog spends the visit being groomed rather than waiting its turn.

Studios that offer it may limit it to certain services or sizes, because a full haircut on a large doodle cannot be compressed by much. It is a scheduling arrangement, not a different groom: the same bath, dry and finish, done in one continuous block. Before assuming anything, ask any studio, ours included, exactly what its version covers, how long it takes and whether the price changes.

  • One groomer for the whole appointment
  • A fixed start time and little or no waiting
  • Pick-up as soon as the dog is finished
  • The same services, done in one continuous block

At Dogtown

It is not on our published menu, so the front desk confirms what can be booked

The grooming menu at 210 Eastern Ave lists bath only and full service by size, with add-ons running from teeth brushing at $10 to anal gland expression at $40, and it does not list an express option. That is not the same as a no. Whether your dog can be booked in a way that keeps waiting to a minimum depends on the service and the day, and the front desk will tell you what is possible when you call 978 491-5922 or message through the Dogtown app.

When you ask, be specific about why. A senior who cannot stand around, a dog that frets in a busy room and a dog that is fine on the table but upset when its person leaves each point to a different arrangement. Mention the coat as well. A short-coated dog's bath and nails can be quick; a matted doodle's full service cannot be, whatever the appointment is called.

Call or message the front desk and say you are asking about an express-style slot

  2. 02

Explain the reason: age, stiffness, or a dog that frets while waiting

  3. 03

Give your dog's weight, coat type and the service you need

  4. 04

Ask what the studio can offer, how long it would take and on which days

Which dogs it suits

Express suits dogs who struggle with the waiting, not dogs who struggle with the groom

An express-style appointment helps the dog whose stress comes from the building: the barking, the waiting, the owner leaving. Seniors who tire on their feet and dogs who fret when confined are the classic cases. It does far less for a dog whose problem is the groom itself, the dryer, the clippers near its face or having its paws held, because those parts still happen at the same pace in a shorter visit.

For that second group, the help is slower handling rather than a faster clock. The $20 behavior or handling surcharge covers extra time and a second pair of hands, and training changes the reaction itself: Brave & Balanced works on handling sensitivity and cooperative care for pups from 4 months. A dog that fears the table needs a different plan from a dog that fears the waiting room, and it helps to know which one you have.

  • Good fit: seniors who tire and dogs who fret while waiting
  • Good fit: quick services on short coats
  • Poor fit: dogs afraid of the dryer or clippers themselves
  • Poor fit: matted coats that need de-matting time

The daycare-day groom

A groom inside a daycare day removes the wait differently: the dog plays instead

A groom can be added to any daycare day, and for a dog that already knows the building it answers much the same need as express. The dog arrives in the morning window, 6:30 to 9:30 AM on weekdays or 8 to 10 AM on Saturdays, plays in its matched group of 7 to 10, is groomed, and goes home at the afternoon window. Our page on grooming during daycare explains how that day runs.

The trade-off is time. A daycare-day groom fills the day, $42 for a full day or $33 for a half day plus the grooming price, where an express visit is in and out. It also needs the free evaluation first, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, while grooming on its own never does. For a social dog it is the easier day; for a dog that dislikes groups, ask about a stand-alone groom instead.

The windows and the Pup Van keep a groom day short either way

Whichever route you take, the windows set the shape of the day. Weekday drop-off and pick-up run 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM; Saturdays 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM; Sundays are for overnight-stay pick-up and drop-off only. A half day at $33 with a bath in the middle is the shortest daycare-day groom, with collection in the 12 to 1 PM window.

The Pup Van collects and returns daycare, Academy and overnight dogs for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so a daycare-day groom can happen without either drive. Outside those towns, ask us for pricing. Book the next groom at pick-up and $5 comes off it, which also gives a nervous dog the same predictable routine each time.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is express grooming more expensive?
Where studios offer it, the price depends on that studio's menu. Dogtown's published grooming prices are by size, bath only $55 to $95 and full service $75 to $120, and the menu has no express price. If the front desk can book an express-style slot for your dog, ask at the same time whether anything about the price changes.
Is express grooming better for anxious dogs?
It depends on what the dog is anxious about. Less waiting helps a dog that frets in a busy room or when its owner leaves. It does not help a dog that fears the dryer, the clippers or being handled, because those parts still happen. For that dog, slower handling with the $20 surcharge, or training such as Brave & Balanced, does more than a shorter visit.
Which services suit a quick, in-and-out visit?
The short ones: a bath and brush-out on a short or medium coat, nail clipping at $16, or a face trim or sanitary trim at $10 each. A full haircut on a large or curly dog, de-matting at $15 per 20 minutes and a first puppy groom all take the time they take, and squeezing them only shortens the dog's patience, not the job.
What should I tell the front desk when I ask about express?
Your dog's weight and coat, the service you want, and why a short visit matters: age, stiffness, worry while waiting or your own schedule. Mention any history with the dryer, clippers or nail trims as well. With that, the front desk can tell you what the studio can book, and suggest a daycare-day groom if it would suit your dog better.
Can a senior dog have an express-style groom?
Seniors are one of the main reasons owners ask, and the front desk will tell you what can be booked. Often the bigger help is a shorter service: a bath with nails and a sanitary trim instead of a full haircut, or a full groom split over two visits. Our answer on grooming senior dogs covers those options in more detail.
