Drop-off day

Should I say goodbye to my dog at boarding drop-off?

The moment at the desk is usually harder on the owner than on the dog. Here is what the guidance and the research say about goodbyes, what belongs in the bag, and the short list of facts the front desk needs from you before you walk back out to Eastern Ave.

The short version

A brief, calm goodbye is fine; the long, emotional version is the part to skip

Two well-known sources put it slightly differently. The ASPCA's guidance on separation anxiety says to behave calmly and quietly, give your dog a pat, say goodbye and leave. VCA's veterinary guidance goes a step further and suggests skipping the goodbye altogether, because it draws attention to the departure. Both agree on the part that matters most: leaving should be a small, ordinary event rather than a scene your dog has to recover from.

The research is thinner than the advice. In a 2025 Royal Veterinary College study with Dogs Trust, 34 new puppy owners were randomly given different sets of guidance, and puppies whose owners were coached to depart and return calmly spent more time resting quietly when left alone. The study found no clear effect on specific signs of separation distress, and the authors call for a larger trial. Read it as support for a calm handover, not as proof that a goodbye does harm.

  • A quiet word and a pat: fine
  • Lingering, apologizing or coming back to the window: skip
  • Hand over the leash and walk out at an ordinary pace
  • Save the big welcome for pick-up, and keep that calm too

What to bring

Bring food portioned by meal, medications with written instructions and one item that smells of home

Dogtown asks overnight guests to bring their own food, pre-portioned by meal, any medications the dog needs, and one small comfort item such as a blanket or a toy. Every suite already has bedding, so the dog bed and the toy basket can stay home. The AKC's boarding advice suggests a piece of clothing that carries your scent, which packs flat, washes easily and does the job of a comfort item well.

Pack the night before so the morning is unhurried, because a rushed, flustered departure is exactly what every source warns against. Label the bag with your dog's name, put the medication instructions on top and check the vaccine dates: Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella must be current, with a city dog license on file, before any stay. Our how-to on packing for an overnight stay goes through the bag item by item.

The handover

Tell the front desk what has changed, then let the handler take the leash

The most useful minute at drop-off is not the goodbye; it is the update. The AKC tells owners to be open with a boarding facility about separation anxiety, resource guarding and any illness that needs close watching, and the same honesty applies to smaller changes. A new food, a skipped breakfast, a sore paw from the weekend or a dog that hates thunder all shape how the first day is run, and the staff can only plan for what they hear.

Then hand over the leash. Many dogs walk off with a handler more easily than they part from a person who is hovering, and the handler's job is to move your dog straight into its day. Overnight guests join a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, so the first hour is busy rather than empty. Report cards in the Dogtown app show you how the day went, and you can message the front desk from the same app.

  1. 01

Walk your dog before the drive so it arrives relieved and settled

  2. 02

Arrive inside a window: weekdays from 6:30 to 9:30 AM, or Sunday from 8 to 10 AM for overnight guests

  3. 03

Hand over the food, the medications and the comfort item, with instructions on top

  4. 04

Tell the desk what has changed since the last visit and how to reach you

  5. 05

Confirm the pick-up day and window

  6. 06

Say a short goodbye if you want to, pass the leash and leave

What staff need to hear

Five facts the staff need before you go, whatever kind of goodbye you choose

Write them down so nothing depends on memory in a busy lobby. The team needs a phone number that works while you travel and a backup contact, your vet's name, what and when your dog eats, every medication with the timing and amount your vet prescribed, and anything about behavior that is new or easy to miss, such as guarding a chew, disliking a hand on the collar or startling at sudden noises.

If your dog struggled at a past stay anywhere, say so plainly. If your dog is new to us, the free evaluation on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30 AM is where the team first sees how it copes without you, and it doubles as a rehearsal for the goodbye itself: you hand over the leash, you leave, and a few hours later you come back to a dog that has had a busy morning.

  • Your phone number and a backup contact
  • Your vet and any condition being treated
  • Meals: amounts, times and what tempts a picky eater
  • Medications exactly as your vet prescribed, in writing
  • New or unusual behavior, including guarding or handling sensitivities

A different goodbye

For a dog that falls apart at the door, change where the goodbye happens

Some dogs cope well with the building and struggle only with the moment you turn away. For them the Pup Van can help: it collects at your door for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so you part on your own front step rather than in a lobby full of new smells. A dog that dislikes cars is better driven by you, with the same calm routine every time.

Other dogs do better with practice. A few daycare days before the trip, at $42 for a full day, give your dog several ordinary goodbyes that all end with you coming back. If your dog panics every time you leave the house, that is a separation problem rather than a drop-off one; talk to your vet and ask about Dogtown's force-free training before you book a long stay. Our overnight stays page covers the rest of the stay.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is it unkind to leave without saying goodbye?
No. Dogs do not keep score of farewells, and VCA's guidance actually suggests skipping the goodbye so the departure draws less attention. If saying a word helps you leave calmly, say it. The kindness is in what surrounds it: a walk first, a relaxed drive, clear notes for the staff and a calm hello at pick-up.
Should I stay until my dog settles?
Usually not. A dog often settles faster once its owner has gone, because the handler can move it into the group without a familiar person to watch for. Waiting at the window, or coming back in to check, starts the goodbye over again. If you want to know how the first hours went, message the front desk in the Dogtown app.
Should I give my dog a treat as I leave?
A treat is fine in principle, and the ASPCA's advice for anxious dogs uses a food puzzle as a parting treat at home. At drop-off, check with the desk before handing anything over, since your dog is about to join a group. An enrichment add-on such as a frozen Kong at $6 can be booked onto the stay instead.
My dog cries when I leave. Will it be okay?
Many dogs protest for a minute and settle once they are busy. Tell the desk it happens so the team expects it. If your dog was distressed for a long time at a past stay, or stops eating away from home, say so when you book; a few daycare days first, a short first stay or a different plan may suit it better.
Can someone else drop my dog off for me?
Ask the front desk before the day how another person is noted on your account. Whoever comes should bring the food, the medications with written instructions and your contact details, and know the pick-up window. A family member the dog knows well, following your usual routine, makes the easiest stand-in.
