Daycare mornings

Should I feed my dog before daycare?

Daycare mornings are rushed, and breakfast is often the casualty: wolfed down at 7:15, then straight into the car and onto the turf. For most dogs that is harmless. For some it is a real risk. Here is how to time breakfast around a play day, which dogs need the most care, and what the team at 210 Eastern Ave should hear from you.

The short version

Feed a light breakfast early, so play does not start on a full stomach

Most dogs do not need to skip breakfast before daycare; they need it earlier. Feed as soon as your dog is up, keep the morning portion modest if your dog eats twice a day, and make dinner the main meal after a long nap at home. Keep water available as usual. Your vet can tell you whether portions should change on daycare days, especially for a dog that is growing, working hard or watching its weight.

Drop-off windows set the timetable. On weekdays dogs arrive between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, on Saturdays between 8 and 10 AM, and they join their playgroup soon after they arrive. A dog fed at 6 for an 8:30 drop-off starts the day with breakfast well behind it; a dog fed at 8:15 for the same drop-off arrives with it barely down. The Pup Van, $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, shifts the timing too, so ask when the van usually reaches your street.

  1. 01

Feed breakfast as soon as your dog is up, not on the way out of the door

  2. 02

Keep the morning portion modest and save the larger meal for the evening

  3. 03

Use a slow feeder or scatter the kibble if your dog bolts its food

  4. 04

Let your dog rest quietly while you get ready

  5. 05

Offer water as usual and pack nothing for the day

  6. 06

Feed dinner once your dog has had time to settle at home

Bloat

Large, deep-chested breeds need the most care, because bloat is an emergency

Gastric dilatation-volvulus, usually called bloat, is a sudden, life-threatening condition in which the stomach fills, swells and can twist on itself. Cornell's Riney Canine Health Center says it is far more common in large, deep-chested dogs, and names Great Danes, Saint Bernards, Weimaraners, Irish Setters, Standard Poodles, Basset Hounds and Doberman Pinschers. VCA adds that any dog can bloat, and that dogs over 100 pounds carry roughly a 20 percent lifetime risk.

Several risk factors touch a daycare morning. Cornell lists eating quickly, one large meal a day and exercising soon after eating. Writing for the AKC, veterinarian Jeff Grognet adds that dogs fed once a day are twice as likely to bloat as dogs fed twice, that fast eaters carry five times the risk of slow ones, and that stressed or fearful dogs are more likely to bloat. Cornell's prevention advice is two or more smaller meals a day and limited activity after meals.

The signs

Know the signs of bloat, and treat them as a drive to the vet, not a wait

Cornell lists unproductive retching, excessive drooling, panting, a bloated or painful belly, restlessness, pale gums, weakness or collapse, and a praying position with the front end down. VCA says immediate veterinary attention, within minutes to a few hours, is needed to save the dog's life, and the AKC's article warns that an untreated dog can go into shock within an hour or two. If you see these signs at any time, call your vet or the nearest emergency hospital on the way.

Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn is open 24 hours, and the City of Gloucester keeps a list of local emergency veterinary offices; save both numbers before you ever need them. If your dog has a deep chest, ask your vet at the next visit about a preventive gastropexy, the surgery VCA calls the most effective means of prevention, which some vets suggest doing at the same time as a spay or neuter.

  • Retching with nothing coming up
  • A swollen, tight or painful belly
  • Drooling, panting and restlessness
  • Pale gums, weakness or collapse

Tell the staff

Tell the front desk five things about how your dog eats

A Dogtown daycare day needs no packed lunch; the published list for a day is your dog on a leash with a secure collar or harness. That makes what you tell us more useful than anything in a bag. Whether a midday meal can be given during a daycare day, for a young puppy or a dog on a medical feeding schedule, is something the front desk confirms with you before the day rather than a service we describe here.

Food also reaches dogs through the extras. A frozen Kong or a homemade pupsicle, $6 each, and a puzzle game at $7 all involve food, so mention allergies and a sensitive stomach before you add them. Write your notes on the new customer form when you start, and repeat anything new at drop-off; the person at the gate at 7 AM should not have to remember a phone call from last month.

  • Your dog's breed or mix, and whether your vet has talked about bloat
  • Any history of bloat, or a gastropexy
  • Food allergies or a sensitive stomach
  • Whether your dog bolts its food
  • Medication or a medical schedule tied to meals

Your dog

Puppies, excited eaters and big dogs each need a slightly different morning

If your puppy still eats three meals a day, a morning half day, in at the 6:30 to 9:30 AM window and out at 12 to 1 PM, lets it have breakfast early and lunch at home. A dog too excited to eat on daycare mornings is not a reason to force a meal; offer breakfast early, pick it up after a while, and feed dinner as normal. If excitement turns into skipped meals on home days as well, talk to your vet.

Large and giant breeds are where timing matters most. A Great Dane, a Weimaraner or a Standard Poodle should have a small, early breakfast with no hard play straight after, and a half day at $33 can suit those dogs on the hottest weeks of a Gloucester summer. Seniors on medication given with food need that plan written down. Every new dog starts with the free evaluation on a weekday morning, which is the right moment to hand those details over.

  • Puppies on three meals: a morning half day and lunch at home
  • Too excited to eat: offer early, do not force, feed dinner as normal
  • Deep-chested breeds: a small, early breakfast and a talk with your vet
  • Medication with food: written instructions for the front desk

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Should I skip breakfast on daycare days?
Usually not. Most dogs do well with an early, modest breakfast and a full dinner. Skipping meals altogether is not something to do without your vet's advice, especially for puppies, small dogs or dogs on medication. The aim is simply to keep a big meal and hard play apart, which Cornell advises for dogs at risk of bloat.
Will Dogtown feed my dog lunch at daycare?
The published list for a daycare day is just a leash and a secure collar or harness, so plan on feeding at home. If your dog needs a midday meal, such as a young puppy or a dog on a medical feeding schedule, ask the front desk before the day and they will confirm what can be arranged. Overnight guests bring pre-portioned food.
Do treats and enrichment add-ons count as food?
Yes. A frozen Kong or a pupsicle at $6 and a puzzle game at $7 all use food, so they add to your dog's daily total and can matter for a sensitive stomach or an allergy. Tell the front desk what your dog can and cannot eat before booking them, and trim dinner a little on days with several extras.
How long should my dog rest after eating before playing?
No single figure suits every dog, which is why we do not print one. Cornell advises limiting activity after meals for dogs at risk of bloat, and VCA lists exercise after a large meal among the risk factors. Ask your vet how long your own dog should wait, especially if it is a large, deep-chested breed, and time breakfast around the answer.
Should I feed a bigger dinner on daycare days?
Only if your vet suggests it. A busy day uses more energy than a quiet one, but portions are about your dog's weight and body condition over weeks, not a single day. Keep dinner to the usual amount unless your vet advises otherwise, and remember that food-based add-ons such as a frozen Kong already add to the day's total.
