Is an overnight stay the same as boarding?
Search for dog boarding in Gloucester and you will find Dogtown; open our booking page and you will find overnight stays. Same building, same dogs, same beds. This page explains why the name changed and what the difference means in practice for a Cape Ann owner choosing where a dog sleeps.
The short version
Same need, different day
Boarding, in the traditional sense, is a kennel: a run or a crate, a couple of leash walks, and a lot of hours with nothing to do. An overnight stay at Dogtown starts from the daycare. Your dog spends the daylight hours in a matched playgroup, on the turf yard or the indoor floors, and goes to a suite only when the day is over. The sleeping arrangement is the smallest part of the stay.
That is why we stopped saying boarding on our own pages. The word set the wrong expectation: owners pictured a dog waiting in a run all day, and then were surprised to get a report card full of play. Under Massachusetts law we are still in the kennel category, and Ollie's Law, signed in September 2024, is bringing statewide daycare and boarding regulations from MDAR in 2026. Same category, different day.
How it works at Dogtown
The day belongs to the playgroup, the night to the suite
A stay is built from daycare days. At drop-off your dog goes into the group it was matched with at the evaluation, based on size, age and play style, and stays with that circle and its handler through the day. Exercise, water breaks, a settle, enrichment if you booked it. When the last daycare dogs go home in the 4 to 6:30 PM window, the overnight guests move to their suites.
The suite is a private space with a raised cot or bed and a blanket, monitored around the clock. In the morning the guest goes back out to its group. Four nights is, from the dog's side, four daycare days and four quiet nights, not four days in a box. Pick-up on a Sunday uses the 8 to 10 AM or 4 to 6 PM window, or the Pup Van brings your dog home for $10 each way across Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea.

What it means for your dog
A tired, socialized dog sleeps better than a bored one
The practical difference shows up at bedtime. A dog that has spent the day playing in a group, sniffing the turf and working a puzzle feeder is ready to sleep when the suite door closes. A dog that has spent the day in a run has energy left and nowhere to put it, which is where barking, pacing and chewed bedding come from. This is the whole argument for building the stay on the daycare.
It also changes who can stay comfortably. Puppies who are already Dogtown daycare dogs treat a first night as an extension of a good day. Adults get the routine they know. Seniors and quieter dogs are matched into calmer groups and can have play kept short. The one thing every guest needs is the free evaluation first, because we will not put a dog into a group we have not watched.

Booking
Book it the way you would book daycare, then add the nights
If your dog already comes to Dogtown, an overnight stay is a few taps in the app or on MoeGo: pick the nights, add a bundle or a groom if you want one, and choose your drop-off and pick-up windows. If your dog is new, the free evaluation on a weekday morning comes first, and many Cape Ann owners pair it with a daycare day or two before the first night away, especially ahead of a long trip out of Logan.
