How many training sessions does my dog need?

The honest answer is a range, and the useful answer is how the range gets narrowed for your dog. Here is every Dogtown program by session count, the five things that move a dog toward the short or the long end, and how the sessions fit a Cape Ann week.

One-on-one training session inside Dogtown

The short version

The short version: 8 to 20 sessions, chosen by the goal rather than the calendar

Most Dogtown programs come in three lengths, 4 weeks and 8 sessions, 6 weeks and 12, or 8 weeks and 16, at two sessions a week. That covers Tiny Tails Puppy School, Bright Beginnings, Brave & Balanced, Calm & Connected, Adventure Academy and Canine Citizen Academy. The middle block is the usual choice; the short one suits a dog that mainly needs structure, and the long one a dog that needs more repetition.

The behavior programs have fixed lengths, because emotional change takes a known minimum of weeks. Focus & Flow is 6 weeks and 12 sessions, React Less, Relax More is 8 weeks and 16, and Polished Pup is 10 weeks and 20. AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy is a fixed 6 weeks and 12 sessions, and the 1:1 Private CGC Fast Track is 5 weeks and 10.

  • Age: puppies fit the middle block; adolescents often need the long one
  • The problem: skills are predictable, feelings set their own pace
  • History: rescues and previously corrected dogs need trust first
  • Homework: daily practice between sessions shortens the block more than anything else
  • Environment: a busy Main Street address needs more proofing than a quiet Lanesville lane

How it works at Dogtown: the assessment picks the block, and the block can change

The count is never guessed from a form. You send the contact form, hear back within one hour on business days, and meet Gabriella Pope, our Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, for a short assessment. She watches the dog, asks what happens before and after the behavior and works out the why: fear, frustration, a missing skill or a reward you did not know you were giving. The program and the block follow from that, and the full investment is confirmed in writing before the first session.

The block is reviewed as the dog goes. A dog placed in the 12-session version of Calm & Connected who is steady by week four may finish early; a dog in Focus & Flow whose triggers turn out to be several rather than one may move to React Less, Relax More. Sessions start from $94, and every program, whatever its length, ends with go-home lessons.

For your dog

What it means for your dog: puppies, adults, rescues and the dogs that need the full twenty

A puppy between 8 and 16 weeks usually does the 12-session Tiny Tails block, then chooses at 4 months between Bright Beginnings, AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy at a fixed 12 sessions, or Brave & Balanced if it is already anxious. An adult with a manners problem often does 8 or 12 sessions of Calm & Connected. A dog with one specific failing, such as the separation item in the Canine Good Citizen test, may need only the 10-session Fast Track.

A rescue in its first month home should expect the longer block, not because it is a worse dog but because the first sessions are spent settling. A dog with significant reactivity, resource guarding or a bite history needs Polished Pup's full 20 sessions over 10 weeks, and Gabby will say so plainly rather than sell a shorter program that cannot finish the job. In every case the count describes the trainer's part; what your dog keeps depends on the practice afterward.

  • Puppies: 12 sessions of Tiny Tails, then a 4-month fork
  • Adults with manners gaps: 8 or 12 sessions of Calm & Connected
  • One stubborn item: the 10-session Fast Track
  • Serious reactivity or guarding: Polished Pup, 20 sessions, no shortcuts

Cape Ann

Fitting the sessions into a Cape Ann year: hours, storms, ticks and the summer beach ban

Sessions are scheduled inside our hours, Monday to Friday 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 6 PM, at 210 Eastern Ave. A twice-weekly block fits most working weeks, and commuters on the Rockport line often take an early or a late slot. Winter blocks should allow for a nor'easter or two; a missed session is rescheduled, but lost home practice is what slows a dog down, so keep a five-minute indoor plan for storm days and watch the National Weather Service Boston forecast.

Season shapes the homework more than the sessions. From June 1 to September 15 Rockport's beaches are closed to dogs, and Gloucester's are closed from May 1 through September, so summer proofing moves to sidewalks and woods, and tick checks are part of the routine from April to November. A block that starts in September finishes as the beaches reopen on October 1, which is why fall is our favorite season to teach recall. Check the sources for the current rules.

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can I book a single training session?
Private training starts from $94 a session and begins with the assessment, which is itself a session where Gabby watches the dog and sets a plan. A single manners issue may take only a handful of visits, and private plans run until the goal is met rather than to a fixed block.
Is an 8-session block enough?
For the right dog, yes. The 4-week block suits a puppy or adult that already has the basics and needs structure, handling and proofing in a few specific places, with an owner who practises daily. It is not enough for fear, reactivity or a dog with much to unlearn, which is why the assessment comes before any block is chosen.
What if my dog needs more sessions than the block?
The block is reviewed at every session, and Gabby will tell you early if the dog is heading for the longer version or a different program. A dog can move from the 12-session block to the 16, or from Focus & Flow to React Less, Relax More, and the revised plan is confirmed in writing before you commit.
Do Dogtown Academy days count as training sessions?
They are not sessions in a program block, but every Academy day includes a training session with our trainer and one-on-one trainer time, so they are the best way to practise between your own sessions or after a block ends. Academy days need the free evaluation, held weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, with vaccinations and a city license on file.
