Cats · the appointment
How long does a cat groom take?
Owners ask because they need to plan the day: a gap between meetings, a drive back to Rockport, a dog to collect from daycare on the same trip. The honest answer is a range that only the coat and the cat can narrow. Here is what sets the clock, why a cat's groom always has pauses in it, and how pick-up works.
The short version
Four things set the length of a cat groom, and the service is only one of them
The service sets the outline. Nail clipping, $20, is claws only. Minimal Trims, $45, is trimming and partial shaving with no water. The Full Bath, $95, adds water, a brush-out, drying and nails. The Full Service, $120, is a full bath with shaving, trims and nails. Each step up adds work, and the two services with water add the slowest stage of any cat groom: getting a coat dry without overwhelming the cat.
The other three factors are the coat, its condition and the cat. A dense long coat takes far longer to comb out and dry than a short one. Mats change everything, because they are clipped off before any bath, and a coat felted to the skin turns a bath into a full shave. The cat's mood sets the pace: a relaxed cat moves through each stage steadily, while a worried one needs more breaks. Age and stiffness add time as well.

By service
From nails to a Full Service, here is what each visit has to fit in
Read the table as an order, not a timetable. The services with water always take longer than the dry ones, and within each service a long, thick coat takes longer than a short one. If the groomer finds more matting than you described, you get a call before anything beyond the booked service is done, and the pick-up time may move with it.
Coat season matters as well. In the spring shed, roughly March to May on Cape Ann, a long-haired cat can carry a great deal of loose undercoat, and the brush-out on a Full Bath takes longer than the same cat's visit in August. Through the heating season, from October to April, a dry, static coat slows the comb too. Booking a Full Bath at the start of a shed, rather than at its peak, keeps the visit shorter.
| Service | Price | What fills the time | What stretches it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nail clipping | $20 | A settling minute, then each paw in turn | A cat that keeps pulling its paws away |
| Minimal Trims | $45 | Clipping mats, partial shaving, a sanitary or pad tidy | More mats than the booking described |
| Full Bath | $95 | Bath, brush-out, careful drying, nails | A long or dense coat to dry, or a heavy shed |
| Full Service | $120 | Bath, shaving, trims and nails | A coat felted across the body, or a nervous cat |
Breaks
Breaks are built into every cat groom, because a calm cat is a safer one
Cats do not tolerate long handling the way many dogs do, and the welfare advice reflects it. International Cat Care says grooming should last only as long as the cat is comfortable, should stop before the cat shows discomfort, and should never be forced on a cat with no way to escape. Our cat behavior specialists work the same way: minimal restraint, an unhurried pace, and a pause the moment a cat's ears, tail or skin say it needs one.
Those pauses cost minutes and save the groom. A cat pushed past its limit can turn a calm session into one that has to end early, and it remembers the table next time. A cat given a break usually settles and lets the work continue. That is why a groom is quoted as a pick-up time rather than a duration. If a cat cannot be groomed safely on the day, we stop and refer you to your vet rather than finish by force.
Drop-off and pick-up
You get a pick-up time at drop-off, and a call if it changes
You do not need to wait at the building. At drop-off the front desk gives you a time to come back, based on the service, the coat and what you told us when you booked, and we call if the cat is ready early or needs longer. Cat appointments sit inside our hours, Monday to Friday 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 6 PM; on Sundays the building opens only for overnight-stay pick-up and drop-off.
Plan the collection like the drop-off. Bring the same secure carrier, keep the car quiet and head straight home rather than running errands with the cat in the back. Dogtown is also a busy dog daycare, and the weekday windows of 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM are when most dogs come and go, so a pick-up outside them is calmer for a nervous cat. In summer, allow extra time on Route 128 and Route 127 if you are driving in from Rockport, Essex or Manchester-by-the-Sea.

Next time
What makes the next groom shorter
Most of the time on a long groom goes on problems that built up between visits. A long coat combed to the skin a few times a week arrives with fewer knots, which means less clipping before the bath and a quicker brush-out after it. Booking the next visit at the right interval does the same job: a coat seen before it mats is a shorter visit than one seen after, and a calmer one for the cat.
The cat's side matters just as much. A carrier left out at home stops being a warning sign, brief handling sessions with treats make paws and belly less of an issue, and an honest booking note means the groomer starts with the right plan rather than discovering it halfway through. None of it takes long, and all of it shows up in the next pick-up time.
- Comb long coats to the skin a few times a week between visits
- Leave the carrier out at home with a familiar blanket in it
- Handle paws and belly briefly, with a treat, most days
- Mention mats, age, stiffness and past bad experiences when you book
- Rebook before the coat starts to knot again
