Do you walk dogs on weekends?
Weekends are when Cape Ann households most want a walker and when a walker's round is hardest to hold. This page says plainly what is and is not written down about weekend walks, how to put in a request that can be answered, and what Dogtown offers on a Saturday and a Sunday when a walk is not the fit.
The short version
Weekday walks are the published service; weekends are a request
Everything printed about Dogtown walks, the three lengths at $25, $35 and $55, the 10-packs and 30-packs, the solo outings and the photo afterward, is written without a day of the week attached. The line that does the work is the one about availability: it depends on your address and the season. On weekends that line carries more weight, because the round is smaller and the roads are busier. We will not state a weekend policy the front desk has not put in writing, so ask early.
The rest of Dogtown does keep weekend hours. The building at 210 Eastern Ave is open Saturday from 8 AM to 6 PM, with daycare drop-off and pick-up windows at 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM. Sunday is closed for daycare and open only for overnight-stay pick-up and drop-off between 8 and 10 AM and 4 and 6 PM. That is the shape of a Dogtown weekend.

How it works at Dogtown
Make the request specific and seasonal, and the front desk can answer it
A weekend walk request is easiest to answer when it looks like a schedule, not a wish. Say which day, which window your dog can manage, which length, and whether it is every weekend, one weekend a month or a single Saturday in October. Say whether it is a standing need, because you work Saturdays at the hospital or on the harbor, or a one-off, because you are at a wedding in Manchester-by-the-Sea. The front desk checks it against the round for that season.
Dogs new to Dogtown complete the free evaluation before any walk, weekday or weekend, and the evaluation itself runs on weekdays only, between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment. So a weekend plan starts with a weekday morning at Eastern Ave, with vaccination records and the city license in hand.

Walk, Saturday daycare or an overnight stay: what each covers
For a Saturday you are working, a daycare day from the 8 to 10 AM window to the 4 to 6 PM window covers the whole shift, with the Pup Van collecting for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. For a weekend away, an overnight stay at $78 a night gives your dog a suite, playgroups by day and 24/7 monitoring, and the Sunday windows let you collect on the way home. A walk, where it can be arranged, covers the dog who needs a midday break while you are out for a few hours.
The three are not rivals. A household with a social young dog often books Saturday daycare every week and asks about a walk only for the odd Sunday; a household with a senior does the reverse. The front desk can build a weekend around your dog once it knows the shape of yours.

What it means for your dog
Most dogs would rather have you on the weekend than a walker
For a dog who is walked by us on weekdays, the weekend is when the household is home, and the best walk is the one you take together. The off-season beaches are the Cape Ann reward: Gloucester's public beaches take dogs from October 1 to April 30 at the time of writing, with Good Harbor on even-numbered days and Wingaersheek on odd ones. Check the town pages at the sources below before you go, because the dates and the plover closures change.
The exceptions are the dogs whose people work weekends, the seniors on a strict bathroom clock, and the puppies who cannot wait through a Saturday wedding. Those are the requests the front desk most wants to hear early. And for a social dog, a Saturday at daycare is not a consolation: it is a playgroup of 7 to 10 matched dogs on the turf.
Summer weekends are the hardest hours of the year to hold a walker's window. Beach traffic backs up the roads from mid-morning, St. Peter's Fiesta in late June and the fireworks on July 3 close streets in Gloucester, and the Schooner Festival fills Labor Day weekend. Rockport keeps dogs off its beaches from June 1 to September 15, so a summer walk is streets and shade regardless. If you need summer weekend cover, ask in spring.
