Owners and the studio
Can I stay with my dog during grooming?
It is a fair question, and usually a loving one. This page explains what happens in the studio at 210 Eastern Ave once you leave, why the usual practice is to groom without the owner present, and how to stay close without standing at the table.
The short version
Usually no, and your dog is the reason
Groomers across the trade work without owners at the table, and the reason is not secrecy. A dog with its person in view keeps trying to reach them. It leans, twists and watches the door instead of settling into the groomer's hands. With scissors near the eyes and clippers near the skin, a still dog is a safe dog.
There is a second reason: the studio is a working room with dryers, tubs and other dogs. Extra people at the door change the sound and the traffic for every dog in there, not only yours. So the rule is that owners drop off, the groomer takes over, and you hear from us when the coat is done. If your situation is different, say so when you book.
- Dogs settle faster and stand stiller without their person in view
- Stillness is safety when scissors and clippers are working near skin
- The studio is shared; visitors change the room for every dog in it
- A concern about a specific dog is a booking conversation, not a rule to fight
How it works at Dogtown
Drop off, a proper handover, then a message when your dog is ready
Booking is online through MoeGo or in the Dogtown app and no evaluation is required for grooming. At check-in the groomer talks with you about the coat, the cut and anything that worries you about your dog on a table. A dog that hates the dryer on its face, a sore hip, a fear of clippers, a spot that was matted last month: tell us all of it.
You then leave, and the visit runs at your dog's pace with breaks as needed. If anything comes up that changes the plan, a mat that needs shaving or a dog who has had enough, we contact you rather than pushing on. When the groom is finished we let you know, and if you book your next visit at pick-up it is $5 off.

What it means for your dog
Puppies learn faster alone, seniors get a quieter room, worried dogs get a slower pace
For a puppy, the first groom is a lesson, and the lesson lands better when the puppy learns that the groomer is a safe person rather than that you are the only safe person. We suggest a short bath-only visit first. Doodle puppies from Rockport to Manchester-by-the-Sea come to us in numbers, and the ones who start young take the table in stride.
Seniors and dogs with medical conditions are the group most owners ask about. Tell us the condition at booking. The groomer plans breaks, standing support and shorter sessions accordingly, and the $20 behavior or handling surcharge exists exactly for dogs who need slower work. For a dog with a hard grooming history, we would rather build trust over two or three shorter visits than push through one long one.
- Puppies: short first visits that teach the groomer is safe
- Adults: a standard groom at the dog's own pace
- Seniors and medical cases: tell us at booking so the session is planned around them
- Hard cases: slower handling, the $20 surcharge and shorter visits
Staying close without staying in the room
Groom during a daycare day, use the Pup Van or wait nearby in Gloucester
The gentlest version of this for many dogs is a groom inside a daycare day. Your dog arrives at the morning window, plays with its group, is groomed, and rests before going home at the afternoon window. The studio is a short walk from the play floors, and the dog is somewhere it already knows. Overnight guests can be groomed before pick-up the same way.
If you would rather be minutes away, a bath-only visit fits an errand run along Eastern Ave or a walk at Stage Fort Park. For Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea households the Pup Van collects and returns your dog for $10 each way, which many owners find easier than a drop-off they find hard to walk away from.
When to speak up
Tell us about the dog, the coat and the beach before the groom, not after
The handover works best with specifics. Say when the last groom was and how it went. Mention a recent swim at Good Harbor, because salt and sand in the undercoat change the bath. Mention Dogtown Common or Ravenswood walks in tick season, April to November, so the groomer knows to look. Mention a lump, a sore spot or medication. All of it helps.
If you are genuinely uneasy about leaving, say that too. We can talk about what the room looks like, how long the visit should run and how we will reach you. What we will not do is invent a policy on the spot, so if you need something unusual, ask when you book and the studio will give you a straight answer.
