How long does a dog groom take?
People ask this so they can plan a morning in Gloucester, a train to Boston or a shift at work around the appointment. The honest answer depends on four things: size, coat, condition and temperament. This page walks through each and shows where the hours go.
The short version
One to two hours for a bath, two to four for a full service, longer for mats
A groom is not one task, it is six in a row: check-in and assessment, bath, dry, brush-out, haircut if booked, and finishing. A 20-pound beagle with a smooth coat moves through all six in a little over an hour. A 70-pound goldendoodle with a full teddy-bear cut takes three hours or more, because there is more coat to wet, far more to dry, and a lot of dog to cut.
The numbers below are how we would set your expectations, not a stopwatch. The studio confirms the timing when you book and again at check-in, because the groomer needs to see the coat before committing. A dog that arrives with Wingaersheek sand packed into the undercoat, or with mats behind the ears, will run longer than the same dog on a clean week.

What sets the clock
Drying takes the longest, and coat condition decides everything else
Drying is the stage owners underestimate. A curly or double coat has to be dried completely with a high-velocity dryer, section by section, because a damp undercoat mats and a damp curl cannot be cut straight. On a Bernese that is often an hour on its own. Size matters less than coat: a 90-pound Labrador dries faster than a 45-pound doodle.
Condition adds time in blocks. De-matting is charged at $15 per 20 minutes at Dogtown, which tells you how the studio thinks about it: real work, measured in time. Temperament matters too. A dog who needs breaks, slower handling or a second pair of hands takes longer, and the $20 behavior or handling surcharge covers that extra time rather than rushing the dog.

How it works at Dogtown

Booking is online through MoeGo or in the Dogtown app, and grooming needs no evaluation. You choose bath only or full service by weight band and add any extras. At check-in the groomer goes over the coat with you, confirms the final price and gives you a realistic pick-up window for that day. If the coat turns out to need de-matting, we tell you then, not after.
The visit itself runs bath, dry, brush-out, cut, finish, with rest and water for the dog between stages. When your dog is done we let you know, and if the groom sits inside a daycare day there is no waiting at all: your dog goes back to its playgroup and comes home at the afternoon window. Book the following visit at pick-up and it costs $5 less.

What it means for your dog
Puppies get short sessions, seniors get breaks, anxious dogs get a slower pace
A puppy's first grooms should be short on purpose. Twenty minutes of bath, dryer and handling that ends well does more for the next ten years than a two-hour session that ends in a struggle. That is why we suggest a bath-only visit as the first appointment and a haircut once the puppy has learned the room.
Seniors and dogs with sore joints need standing breaks, so their grooms run longer than the coat alone would suggest, and that is the right trade. Anxious dogs are the same: a slower groom is a shorter memory. If your dog falls into either group, tell us at booking so the studio schedules the time rather than squeezing it in.

Planning the day
Pair the groom with a daycare day, the Pup Van or an errand run in Gloucester
The easiest way to make the clock irrelevant is a groom inside a daycare day. Drop off between 6:30 and 9:30 AM; your dog plays, gets groomed, plays again and comes home at the 4 to 6:30 PM window. Overnight guests can be groomed before pick-up, with 10 or 15 percent off through the Dogtown Classic and Deluxe bundles.
If you would rather wait nearby, a two-hour bath fits a coffee on Main Street and a walk at Stage Fort Park. A four-hour doodle groom is a morning at work. For Rockport, Essex, Manchester-by-the-Sea and Gloucester households, the Pup Van carries your dog each way for $10 and takes the drive out of the equation.
