Can I book a groom for the same day?

Your dog rolled in something on the beach, guests land tonight, or the groom you meant to book slipped your mind. Here is how same-day grooming really works at 210 Eastern Ave, and how to raise your odds without wasting a phone call.

The short version

It depends on the day, so ask early and ask for the simplest service

A grooming studio runs on a calendar of booked slots, each sized to the dog and the service. A same-day slot exists when the day was booked light, when a client cancelled, or when a booked dog turns out to need less time than planned. None of those can be predicted at 7 AM, which is why the honest answer is 'depends on the day' and not 'yes'. What we can tell you is which asks are easier to fit.

A bath is easier than a full service, because it takes less table time and no scissor work. A dog already in the building for daycare is easier than one who needs dropping off. A flexible pick-up is easier than a hard 3 PM. Stack those three and a same-day groom becomes likely on an ordinary weekday. Ask for a full haircut on the Saturday before a holiday and it becomes a long shot.

  • Call or check online early in the morning, when the day's gaps are visible
  • Ask for a bath, or nails and a face trim, rather than a full haircut
  • Offer a flexible pick-up so the groomer can slot your dog around booked work
  • If your dog is already at daycare, the answer is usually easier

At Dogtown

Three ways to ask, and what each one gets you

Online booking through MoeGo, reached from the Book button on this site, shows the open slots as the system has them. If a same-day time appears, take it; that is a real gap. The Dogtown app does the same and also lets you message the front desk. The phone, 978 491-5922, is the tool for anything the system cannot see: a dog who could be squeezed in between two baths, or a cancellation that has not been released yet.

Cancellations are the usual source of same-day space. Grooming appointments cancelled without notice carry a $10 fee, and most clients call ahead, which frees a slot the front desk can hand to the next caller. The building is open Monday to Friday 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 6 PM; on Sundays the doors open only for overnight-stay pick-up and drop-off, so plan a same-day request for Monday through Saturday.

  1. 01

Check MoeGo or the Dogtown app first thing for an open slot today

  2. 02

If nothing shows, call 978 491-5922 and say what your dog needs and when you can collect

  3. 03

Have your dog's weight and coat type ready, because bath and full-service prices are set by size

  4. 04

Arrive at the time the front desk gives you, not the general daycare drop-off window

  5. 05

Rebook at pick-up for the next groom and take $5 off, so next time is not a scramble

A same-day bath suits most adults; a first groom and a senior deserve a planned day

Adult dogs who know the studio take a same-day bath in stride. They have met the tub, the dryer and the table, and a shorter notice period changes nothing for them. This is the dog who came back from Good Harbor on an even-numbered day in March smelling of low tide, and who will be clean and fluffy by evening.

A puppy's first groom should not be a same-day scramble. The first visit sets the tone for years, and it goes best when the puppy is rested, the groomer has room to go slowly and nobody is watching the clock. The same is true of seniors, of dogs who need our behavior or handling surcharge ($20) for slower, more careful work, and of any dog with mats, because dematting is billed at $15 per 20 minutes and takes the time it takes. Book those ahead.

  • Adults who know the studio: a same-day bath is fine
  • First grooms, seniors and dogs who need slow handling: book a planned slot
  • Matted coats: never same-day, the dematting needs its own time

The Cape Ann calendar

The days a same-day slot is least likely, and why

Cape Ann has a rhythm, and the grooming calendar follows it. Expect the studio to be tighter in the run-up to St. Peter's Fiesta in late June, the Gloucester fireworks on July 3 and the Schooner Festival over Labor Day weekend, when half the town has family arriving. The same goes for the week before Thanksgiving and the days around Christmas. The first weeks of October, when Gloucester's beaches reopen to dogs, bring a wave of sandy, salty coats too.

Quiet weekdays in the middle of a month are the opposite, and a nor'easter forecast often empties a morning as people stay home, which can leave the studio with room for a dog who lives close to Eastern Ave. If you commute on the Rockport line and cannot get back for a mid-afternoon pick-up, the Pup Van can return a groomed dog home for $10 each way within Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can a brand-new dog get a same-day groom?
Yes, if a slot exists. Grooming at Dogtown needs no evaluation, unlike daycare, overnight stays and walks, so a dog we have never met can come straight to the studio. Give the front desk your dog's weight and coat type when you call, because prices are set by size, and tell us about any handling worries so the groomer is ready.
How much notice do I need to cancel a grooming appointment?
Grooming appointments cancelled without notice carry a $10 cancellation fee. Call or message through the app as soon as you know you cannot make it; the earlier you do, the more likely the slot goes to another dog, which is exactly what makes same-day space possible for everyone else. Ask the front desk what counts as notice for your booking.
Can I add a bath to today's daycare visit?
Often, yes. Ask at drop-off between 6:30 and 9:30 AM on a weekday or 8 and 10 AM on Saturday, and the front desk will check with the groomer. Your dog moves from the playgroup to the studio and back, and comes home clean and tired. On busy days the answer may be nails and a face trim rather than a full bath.
Is a same-day groom more expensive?
No. Prices do not change with notice. A bath is $55 to $95 by size, a full service $75 to $120, and add-ons cost the same whether you booked a month ahead or an hour. The only fee tied to timing is the $10 cancellation fee for appointments dropped without notice, and the only timing discount is $5 off when you rebook at pick-up.
