Small dog grooming in Gloucester, MA

A small dog is not a large dog in miniature once it is on a grooming table. It chills faster after a bath, some small breeds carry a fragile windpipe or a kneecap that slips, and their mouths crowd teeth into very little space. This page covers the up-to-25-pound tier, how a small dog is handled and dried, and the add-ons that earn their price on a little dog.

The small tier

The small tier is any dog that weighs 25 pounds or less on the day

Our menu prices grooming by weight, and the first band stops at 25 pounds. Up to that line, a bath is $55 and a full service is $75. From 26 to 50 pounds, the medium band, the same visits cost $65 and $85. Breed names do not decide it: a lean beagle and a heavy cockapoo can sit in different bands, and a puppy can move from small to medium during its first year. The groomer confirms the final figure once the coat has been looked over at check-in.

Choose the service by the coat. A bath suits a smooth or short coat such as a pug, a smooth chihuahua or a smooth dachshund, which has no haircut to pay for. Full service is for coats that keep growing, such as a Shih Tzu, a Yorkie or a maltipoo. If your dog sits close to the 25-pound line, weigh it at home before you book, so the price you see online is the price you pay.

Handling

Small dogs are handled around their weak spots, so tell us about windpipes, knees and backs

Some conditions are common enough in small breeds that the groomer should hear about them before your dog is on the table. VCA notes that tracheal collapse often affects chihuahuas, Pomeranians, Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos, toy poodles and Yorkshire terriers, that the cough can worsen when something presses on the windpipe, such as a collar, and that a harness is advisable instead. If your vet has diagnosed it, say so in the booking notes, and bring your dog in on its harness.

VCA also lists the Maltese, chihuahua, poodle and bichon frise among small breeds with an inherited tendency to a slipping kneecap, which an owner sees as a skip in the step or a dog running on three legs. A dog with a sore knee should not have that leg held out for long, so the groomer needs to know which leg and what your vet advised. Our groomers pace every step to the dog in front of them, and a dog that needs slower, more careful handling has the $20 handling surcharge for extra time and hands.

  • A collapsing trachea or a honking cough: say so, and arrive on a harness
  • A slipping kneecap: name the leg and what your vet advised
  • Heart, breathing or back trouble: get your vet's go-ahead first
  • A dog that panics when lifted: tell the groomer at check-in

Drying

A small dog leaves dry to the skin, because a little body loses heat fast

Drying is where size matters most. The AVMA's cold-weather guidance notes that short-haired and short-legged pets feel the cold faster, and a damp seven-pound dog walking out to the car on a January afternoon on Cape Ann gets cold quickly. So the aim is a dog that is dry to the skin, not just dry on top. Fine single coats and dense double coats dry at very different speeds, and the groomer plans the time around the coat in front of them.

How the drying is done, how much towel work comes first, the dryer setting and how close it comes, is chosen for the coat and the dog, and the groomer confirms the method at check-in. If your small dog is frightened of the dryer, say so when you book; our answer on dryer fear explains the gentler options and the practice that helps at home. In the cold months, bring a sweater for the walk out and have the car warm for the ride home along Eastern Ave.

  • Dry to the skin, not only on the surface
  • Dryer method confirmed for your dog at check-in
  • Dryer fear noted in the booking, not discovered on the table
  • A sweater and a warm car from November to March

Add-ons

Four add-ons do most of the work on a small dog, at $10 to $16 each

Nail clipping, $16, comes first. A dog that is carried, walks on carpet and spends the winter indoors does little to wear its nails down, and VCA notes that overgrown nails cause discomfort and a lack of traction. Teeth brushing, $10, comes next. The AKC explains that small dogs' mouths are crowded, with teeth growing close together and at odd angles, so plaque builds up, and that many little dogs do not chew their food much. A brushing on the table freshens breath; only your vet can clean below the gum line.

The $10 face trim keeps hair out of the eyes on a Shih Tzu, Maltese, Havanese or Yorkie between full grooms, and the $10 sanitary trim keeps the rear clean on a long-coated small dog. Whitening, an $8 shampoo, brightens a white coat, and anal gland expression is on the menu at $40 if your vet or your dog's scooting says it is needed. Add any of them to a bath or a full service when you book.

Breeds and logistics

Each small breed has its own grooming page, and any of them can be groomed on a daycare day

The coat decides the details, so we keep a page for each common small breed: Shih Tzu, Yorkshire terrier, Maltese, Havanese, bichon frise, Pomeranian, Cavalier King Charles spaniel and West Highland white terrier, plus pages for the chihuahua, papillon, pug, French bulldog, dachshund, Lhasa apso, coton de Tulear, Pekingese, cairn and Scottish terriers, and the small doodles: maltipoo, cockapoo and cavapoo. Each one explains the cut, the tangle spots and how that coat behaves between visits.

Small dogs that come to Dogtown for daycare play in groups matched by size, and a groom can be added to a daycare day after the free evaluation, held on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM. Drop off in the morning window and collect a clean dog between 4 and 6:30 PM. On daycare days the Pup Van, $10 each way, serves Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. If plans change, cancel with notice; a groom cancelled without it costs $10.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

My dog weighs 27 pounds. Which price do I pay?
The medium band: $65 for a bath or $85 for a full service, because the small band stops at 25 pounds. The band follows the weight on the day, not the breed. If your dog is right on the line, weigh it at home before you book and note the number; the final price is confirmed at check-in after the coat assessment.
Does a short-coated small dog need a full groom?
Usually not. A pug, a smooth chihuahua or a smooth dachshund has no haircut to pay for, so a bath at $55 with a blow-dry and brush-out covers it. Add nail clipping at $16 and teeth brushing at $10 and the visit still costs less than many full services. Save the full service for coats that keep growing.
Is teeth brushing at the groomer a dental cleaning?
No. It is a $10 brushing of the teeth on the table, which freshens breath and keeps up a habit. The AKC notes that cleaning without anesthesia only removes surface tartar and cannot reach below the gum line. Your vet's cleaning is still needed; the brushing helps between those visits.
My small dog has a collapsing trachea. Can you still groom her?
Tell us when you book, and bring her on a harness rather than a collar, which VCA advises for dogs with the condition because pressure on the windpipe can set off the cough. Mention what your vet has said about excitement and heat. The groomer plans the handling around it, and the $20 handling surcharge covers extra time if she needs it.
Can I book a small dog groom without daycare?
Yes. Grooming needs no evaluation, so you can book a bath or full service online or in the Dogtown app and bring your dog in during a drop-off window. Daycare needs the free evaluation first; once that is done, the groom can ride along on a daycare day instead, with one drop-off and one pick-up.
