White coats

White dog grooming in Gloucester, MA: whitening and tear stains

A white coat shows everything: beach sand, road salt, a summer of grass and the rust-colored marks under the eyes and on the paws. Some of that washes out, and some of it is your dog telling you something. This page separates the two, explains what whitening shampoo can and cannot do, and covers Samoyeds, Westies, bichons and Maltese.

Whitening

Whitening brightens a dull or yellowed coat; it does not erase stains that have a cause underneath

Whitening on our menu is an $8 brightening shampoo that restores white and light coats, added to a bath or a full service. It works on the coat as a whole: the gray cast a white dog picks up from dirt, the yellowing along the legs and belly, the general dullness after a winter of salted sidewalks. A bath alone does some of that; whitening takes the coat further back toward white. If your dog has sensitive skin, ask the groomer at check-in about the product before it goes on.

What it cannot do is undo the reddish-brown staining under the eyes, around the mouth or on the feet. The AKC explains that the color comes from porphyrins in tears and saliva, so it builds wherever the hair stays wet, and it keeps returning while the tearing or licking continues. Whitening can soften it, trimming takes the stained hair away, and only dealing with the cause stops new staining. A medicated wash is a different add-on: the antiseptic or fungal shampoo, also $8, for skin your vet is treating.

  • Whitening, $8: a dull, gray or yellowed white coat
  • Face trim, $10: stained hair at the eye corners kept short
  • Antiseptic or fungal shampoo, $8: when your vet suggests it
  • Your vet: sudden staining, red eyes or constant licking

Where stains come from

Rust-colored stains come from porphyrins in tears and saliva, so they gather where a white coat stays wet

The AKC explains that porphyrins are compounds dogs naturally excrete in tears, saliva, urine and feces, that they contain iron, and that a build-up turns the fur pink or rusty red. That is why the marks gather under the eyes, around the mouth and beard, on the paws and under the tail. White coats show it most, but the AKC also notes that many breeds tear-stain and their darker fur simply masks it.

The cause differs by place. Under the eyes it is tears that do not drain away: VCA lists flat faces, blocked ducts, allergies and even hair at the eye corners covering the duct openings among the reasons. On the paws it is licking, and the AKC says excessive licking is often a sign of an underlying medical or behavioral issue, from allergies to skin infections such as yeast dermatitis. A white dog with pink feet is worth a vet visit before it is worth a whitening bath.

  • Under the eyes: tears that overflow instead of draining
  • Mouth and beard: saliva, food and water
  • Paws: licking, often driven by itch
  • Under the tail: a $10 sanitary trim keeps it clean

White breeds

Samoyeds, Westies, bichons and Maltese are all white, but each coat asks for something different

The Samoyed is the breed where whitening has limits by design. The AKC breed standard describes a double coat, a soft, thick, close undercoat with longer, harsher hair standing straight out from the body, and allows pure white, white and biscuit, cream, or all biscuit. A cream or biscuit shade is the dog's color, not dirt, and no shampoo should be asked to remove it. What a Samoyed needs from a bath is the loose undercoat out, which is what Shed Release, $10, is for.

The other three each have a page of their own. The West Highland white terrier grooming page covers the hard white jacket and why hand-stripping is not on our menu. The bichon frise grooming page covers the curly double coat and the face. The Maltese grooming page covers a silky single coat that marks wherever something rubs it, and the Samoyed grooming page goes further into the double coat. All four are priced by weight, like every dog we groom.

Price

A white dog's visit is the bath or full service for its weight, plus $8 for whitening

Whitening goes onto either service for the same $8. A bath, with the warm wash, blow-dry and brush-out, is $55 up to 25 pounds, $65 from 26 to 50, $75 from 51 to 90, $85 over 90 and $95 for an extra-large dog with long hair. A full service with a haircut is $75, $85, $110 or $120 across the same weights. The final figure is confirmed at check-in after the groomer has looked at the coat.

Small white dogs such as the Maltese, the bichon and the Westie sit in the $55 and $75 band. Add the $10 face trim for the eye corners and the $10 sanitary trim for the rear when they need it. One sensible rhythm is a bath with whitening between haircuts and whitening again with the full service. Book the next visit at pick-up and $5 comes off it.

Cape Ann routine

Salt, sand and ticks show on a white coat first, so rinse and look after every walk

A white dog on Cape Ann wears the landscape home. From October 1, Gloucester's beaches open to dogs again, Good Harbor on even-numbered days until March 31 and Wingaersheek on odd-numbered days until April 30 at the time of writing, and wet sand dries gray in a white coat. Winter adds road salt and de-icer on every sidewalk, and the AVMA's cold-weather advice is to wipe them off the feet before a dog licks them. From April to November, the one advantage of white is that ticks are easy to spot.

A groom can ride along on a daycare day once your dog has passed the free evaluation: drop off between 6:30 and 9:30 AM and collect a clean dog between 4 and 6:30 PM. The Pup Van does the driving for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. Unlimited daycare members take 15 percent off grooming, and overnight guests can have a bath before pick-up so they come home white.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Will whitening remove my dog's tear stains completely?
Usually not. Whitening brightens the coat overall and can soften staining, but the rust color under the eyes comes from porphyrins in tears and keeps returning while the eyes overflow. A $10 face trim takes the stained hair short, and daily wiping slows new staining. The AKC advises contacting your vet if a white-faced dog suddenly develops heavy staining.
Why are my white dog's paws pink?
Most often from licking. The AKC explains that porphyrins in saliva turn the fur pink or rusty red where a dog licks, and that excessive licking is often a sign of an underlying problem such as allergies or a skin infection. See your vet first; a bath with whitening afterward brightens the fur once the licking has a plan.
My Samoyed looks cream, not white. Is that dirt?
Possibly not. The AKC standard allows a Samoyed to be pure white, white and biscuit, cream or all biscuit, so a cream tint may be your dog's own color. A bath lifts dirt and whitening brightens a dull coat, but neither should be expected to change a dog's natural shade. Ask the groomer at check-in what they see.
Can I use a tear stain remover at home?
Not without your vet. VCA advises against using any product near the eyes without veterinary advice, warns against hydrogen peroxide near the eyes, and notes that over-the-counter tear stain products have not been proven effective in research trials. A soft, damp cloth twice a day and short hair at the eye corners are the safe basics.
How often can my dog have whitening?
Whitening is a shampoo added to a bath or full service, so it follows your dog's bath schedule rather than a calendar of its own. If your dog has sensitive or itchy skin, say so when you book; the antiseptic or fungal shampoo is a separate $8 add-on for skin your vet is treating, and the groomer will tell you which suits the visit.
