This page explains how we run an overnight stay for a senior dog in Gloucester, what the memory-foam bed costs, and what to tell the front desk before you go.

Overnight stays for senior dogs: who they suit and who they do not
The typical guest is a nine- to fourteen-year-old dog whose people still travel: a lab with grey on the muzzle whose family goes to Florida in February, a spaniel whose owner commutes on the Rockport line and has a conference out of state. These dogs do well with us because the day is built around rest as much as play, and the night is quiet.
Some seniors are on daily medication, some eat a prescription diet, some have a bad hip and need a low bed. Tell the front desk all of it when you book and ask how they want medications and schedules handed over. Cape Ann has a lot of older dogs, and the team has seen most of the patterns before, from slow eaters to bad hips.
A senior stay is not right for a dog with a condition that needs veterinary monitoring overnight, or one whose mobility has failed to the point where it cannot get outside on its own. Those dogs need a vet or a sitter in the home. If you are not sure, describe the situation to the front desk and we will tell you plainly.

The stay
A senior dog's overnight stay, hour by hour
Drop off in a regular window; the late-afternoon one, 4 to 6:30 PM on weekdays, suits a dog that likes its morning at home. Hand over the pre-portioned meals, the medications with your written instructions, and a blanket that smells of the couch. The handlers ask about the dog's habits: how often it goes out, whether it eats slowly, what it does when it has had enough.
The day is a senior's day. Your dog joins a group matched for size and temperament, and the handlers watch for the moment it has had enough. That moment comes earlier than for a young dog, and it is met with a quiet spot, water and a lick mat if you have added one, not more play. In August heat and in nor'easter weeks the indoor floors take over so nobody is stiff from cold turf.
Night is the point of the whole thing. A suite of its own, the bed we provide or the Deluxe memory-foam upgrade, your blanket, dim lights and 24/7 monitoring by people who know a slow dog from a sick one. Morning brings the usual routine: outside first, breakfast, medication if it is due, then back to a gentle group.

Price
$78 a night, and why the Deluxe bundle is the senior's choice
The suite is $78 a night at any age. The Deluxe bundle adds $15 a night and is the one built for older dogs: an upgraded orthopedic memory-foam bed, a gourmet stuffed Kong or Toppl to work on quietly, a daily treadmill or enrichment session that can be a slow sniff rather than a run, and 15 percent off grooming. The Classic at $10 a night gives a daily pupsicle or puppy cup and 10 percent off grooming.
Grooming matters more for an old dog than a young one. Nails grow with less wear, coats mat where the dog can no longer reach, and a warm bath eases stiff muscles. Nail clipping is $16, a sanitary trim $10, dematting $15 per 20 minutes and a bath $55 to $95 by size, all bookable onto the last day of the stay. Our groomers add a $20 handling surcharge only when a dog needs slower, more careful work, which some seniors do.

Certified staff run the floor and the night watch, and the same people see your dog every day of the stay, so a change in appetite or gait is noticed on day two rather than at pick-up.
We also know the local picture. Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn is the 24-hour emergency hospital the North Shore relies on, and Gloucester keeps its own list of local emergency vets on the city site, and we will ask for your vet's details at drop-off. Tick season on Cape Ann runs April to November, and an older dog on the turf still needs its preventive; check that before the stay.

Windows, the Pup Van and the easy route for a stiff dog
Drop-off and pick-up windows: weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM; Saturday 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM; Sunday, overnight guests only, 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM. The building is at 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester. Choose the window that leaves your dog's morning routine intact.
The Pup Van runs to Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way, and for an old dog who finds the car stressful it is often the calmer option: one short ride with a handler it knows. Outside those towns, ask us for pricing. Skip the train; the MBTA allows dogs only off-peak at staff discretion and never on seats, which is no way to move a fourteen-year-old lab.
