Cat grooming

Ragdoll cat grooming in Gloucester, MA

The breed is named for going limp in your arms, and VCA calls that a popular misconception. What Ragdolls usually are is relaxed and trusting, which makes them easy to groom until something on the table surprises them.

Groomer combing a calm cat

The coat

A Ragdoll coat feels like rabbit fur and rarely mats, except where the belly carries the weight

VCA describes the coat as medium to long and soft as rabbit fur, and says it sheds minimally and does not mat; a weekly comb is its whole advice. The breed's Wikipedia entry, citing the Cat Fanciers' Association, puts that down to the lack of a dense undercoat, the layer that felts so quickly on a Persian. It also notes a noticeable increase in shedding in spring, which is when most Ragdoll owners first wonder about a groomer.

Where a Ragdoll does get into trouble is underneath. VCA notes that a fatty pad under the abdomen is common in the breed and that Ragdolls are prone to obesity, so the belly fur is pressed, warm and rubbed every time the cat lies down. The britches sit right by the litter box. And a heavy cat reaches its own rear less well, which VCA's page on joint disease links to extra weight and to age.

  • Back and sides: little undercoat, so tangles are rare
  • The belly pad: pressed and rubbed, the usual place for a knot
  • The britches: close to the litter box and easily soiled
  • Spring: the one season the comb fills up

On the table

Relaxed is not the same as unflappable, so the groom is paced for the startle

Ragdolls are trusting, and VCA's word is overly so. A cat that has always been carried around the house without complaint has often never met a clipper, a running tap at cat height or a stranger handling its paws. Most take it calmly. Some go stiff and still, which can look like cooperation and is really a cat asking for a pause. With males reaching 20 pounds, a sudden scramble is a lot of cat to manage, so the pace matters.

Our cat studio is a separate room away from the dog areas, so the barking that can set a quiet cat off stays elsewhere. The cat behavior specialists who work there use minimal restraint, keep the pace unhurried and stop before stress builds, rather than relying on a placid cat to put up with whatever comes. If a Ragdoll cannot be groomed safely on the day, the session ends and we refer you to your vet.

  • Practice the carrier at home so the trip is not the first surprise
  • Handle the paws and belly for a few seconds most days
  • Tell us if a clipper, a tap or a dryer has upset your cat before
  • Expect breaks: a still, stiff cat gets a pause, not more of the same

What we do

Most Ragdolls need a belly tidy and a spring bath, and only rarely a lion cut

Minimal Trims at $45 is the service that fits the breed's weak spot. It is trimming and partial shaving with no bath, so the belly pad, the britches and the sanitary area can be taken shorter and the rest of the silky coat left as it is. The Full Bath at $95 earns its place once a year as the spring shed lifts: warm water loosens the extra coat, the brush-out takes it, and drying and nails finish the visit.

The Full Service at $120, with the bath, shaving, trims and nails, is there for a Ragdoll whose belly knots have joined up, or one that has gone months without a comb. For a coat VCA describes as non-matting, a full lion cut is rarely the first answer. We do not publish counts of the breeds that come through the studio; what we can tell you is that every cat, Ragdoll or not, is assessed for coat and temperament before its service starts.

How often

Every two to three months suits most Ragdolls, and the cat menu runs from $20 to $120

With a weekly comb at home, most Ragdolls need a professional visit only every two to three months, timed around the belly rather than the calendar, plus the spring Full Bath. The Wikipedia entry suggests brushing at least twice a week, which buys a longer gap. Skipping a visit costs less than it would on a Persian, but a belly knot left through a summer can turn a $45 tidy into a $120 Full Service.

Book online, in the Dogtown app or on 978 491-5922. Cat grooming needs no evaluation visit, and the published cat menu lists its four services without weight bands, so a big male is booked from the same lines as a small female. If the belly is your concern, book Minimal Trims and say so in the notes; if it is the spring shed, book the Full Bath. Our cat grooming page has the full menu.

At home

A weekly comb with the belly saved for last is the whole Ragdoll routine

Because the coat lies close and silky, a medium-toothed metal comb does the whole cat. Start where your Ragdoll likes it, usually the chest and cheeks, and save the belly for last, with the cat lying on its side. Run your fingertips over the belly pad and the britches before you comb; anything that lifts with the skin is a knot starting. Our guide to preventing mats on a cat covers the routine in more detail.

Weight is the other half of home care. A Ragdoll that is getting heavier reaches its rear less and lies on its belly more, and both make the coat's one weak spot weaker. Ask your vet about a target weight, since VCA calls the breed prone to obesity, and keep the belly comb going through the spring, when the Wikipedia entry notes shedding picks up.

Work down the back and sides with the medium teeth of a metal comb

  3. 03

Check behind the ears and in the armpits with your fingertips

  4. 04

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Do Ragdolls really go limp when they are picked up?
The breed is named for it, and Wikipedia describes a tendency to go limp and relaxed when held, but VCA calls the limp cat a popular misconception. What most Ragdolls are is relaxed and trusting. On a grooming table that usually means an easy session, and occasionally a cat that is startled by something new, which is why the pace stays slow.
Does my Ragdoll need a lion cut?
Rarely. VCA describes the coat as non-matting, and most Ragdolls need only the belly, britches and sanitary area tidied, which is Minimal Trims at $45. A lion cut is part of the Full Service at $120 and is meant for a coat whose knots have joined up across the belly and sides. The groomer assesses the coat on arrival and recommends what it needs.
My Ragdoll has a saggy belly. Is that a grooming problem?
The pad itself is normal: VCA notes that a fatty pad under the abdomen is common in Ragdolls. It matters for grooming because that is where the coat is pressed and rubbed, so it is the first place to tangle. Comb it weekly with the cat on its side. If the cat is also gaining weight, ask your vet, since VCA says the breed is prone to obesity.
How much do Ragdolls shed?
Less than most long-haired cats. VCA says the coat sheds minimally, and Wikipedia credits the lack of a dense undercoat while noting a clear increase in spring. A Full Bath at $95 as that spring shed starts clears the loose coat in one visit, and a comb at least once a week handles the rest of the year in most homes.
Do you groom many Ragdolls?
We do not publish breed counts for the cat studio. What applies to every cat, Ragdoll or not, is the same: a quiet room away from the dogs, an assessment of coat and temperament before the service starts, minimal restraint, and a referral to your vet if a cat cannot be groomed safely. Book the service that matches the coat and mention the breed in the notes.
