Newfoundland grooming

Newfoundland grooming in Gloucester, MA

The AKC calls the Newfoundland a born swimmer with partially webbed feet, and its heavy double coat takes a long time to dry once it is soaked. Add the AKC's highest drooling rating and webbed feet that collect half the beach, and a Newfie groom has three jobs: the coat, the feet and the face.

The coat

A flat, coarse outer coat over a heavy undercoat, made for cold water

The AKC describes the Newfoundland's outer coat as flat and coarse, part of a heavy double coat in black, brown, gray or the black-and-white Landseer. The breed hauled nets and worked in water rescue, and it is a born swimmer with partially webbed feet. Shedding season comes about twice a year, but the AKC notes that spayed and neutered Newfs tend to shed year-round and may need brushing out several times a week.

On a dog this size the coat tangles in predictable places: behind the ears, under the collar, in the trousers on the back legs, along the belly and in the tail feathering, wherever hair rubs or stays wet. The AKC's routine is a thorough going-over with a slicker brush and a long-toothed comb at least once a week, daily in the shedding season, to clear dead hair before it mats.

  • Outer coat: flat and coarse, on a dog bred for water work
  • Undercoat: heavy, with two sheds a year, or year-round shedding after spay or neuter
  • Mats: behind the ears, at the collar, in the trousers, belly and tail
  • Feet: webbed, with hair between the toes that holds sand and salt

The groom

The full service tidies the feet, ears and feathering, and the jowls need their own care

The bath is a warm wash, blow-dry and brush-out. The full service is a bath plus a breed-specific or custom haircut, which on a Newfoundland is a tidy rather than a clip: the feet and the hair between the toes trimmed, the feathering on the legs and tail evened, the ears neatened and the sanitary area cleaned. The AKC lists the Newfoundland among the long double-coated working breeds, and the same guide says grooming experts generally advise against shaving double-coated dogs.

Then there is the drool. The AKC rates the Newfoundland 5 out of 5 for drooling, the top of its scale, and the folds of the lips stay wet for much of the day. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that warm, moist areas such as lip folds carry higher bacterial counts and a higher risk of infection. A groom can wash the face and jowls, but it cannot treat a sore fold. A lip fold that is red, smells or weeps needs your vet.

Drying and timing

Drying a Newfie properly means dry at the skin, and that sets the pace of the visit

A coat that sheds water on the outside holds it underneath once it is soaked through, and the AKC's drying guide lists double-coated breeds among the slower dogs to dry. It also explains why the job matters: thorough drying prevents mats, tangles and bacteria growth, and removes the wet-dog smell. A blow-dry and brush-out are part of every bath here. With a dog of 100 pounds or more, ask when you book how long to allow, and whether a daycare day suits your dog better than a wait.

Book around the sheds. Shed Release, $10 on the bath, takes out the loose undercoat as each heavy shed starts, and for a spayed or neutered Newf that sheds all year it is worth adding more often. Let the brushing slide and the trousers and belly felt; dematting is $15 per 20 minutes, and a matted belly on a dog this size can take several blocks. Booking the next visit before you leave takes $5 off it.

  • Dry at the skin, not just on top, before the brush goes in
  • Shed Release at the start of each heavy shed
  • More often for a spayed or neutered Newf that sheds all year
  • Rebook at pick-up for $5 off

Price

$95 for the bath and $120 for the full service, at the top of the size scale

Every adult Newfoundland is over 90 pounds, so the prices sit at the top of the sheet: the bath is $95 in the extra-large long-hair tier, and the full service is $120. Shed Release adds $10, nail clipping is $16 and a sanitary trim is $10. A Newfoundland puppy still under 90 pounds is priced by its weight on the day, like any dog. The groomer confirms the tier and the final price at check-in after a look at the coat.

Two more lines can apply. The $8 antiseptic or fungal shampoo is a medicated wash for itchy, irritated or sensitive skin, used when your vet has recommended it or the skin calls for it. A giant who needs extra hands or a slower pace carries the $20 behavior or handling surcharge, and you are told before the groom starts. Overnight guests on the Dogtown Deluxe take 15 percent off grooming, and the Deluxe also adds an orthopedic memory-foam bed.

At home

Between grooms, dry the coat after every swim, brush weekly and wipe the jowls

Newfoundlands are born swimmers, the AKC says, and Cape Ann gives them the cold months. At the time of writing, Wingaersheek takes dogs on odd-numbered days from October 1 to April 30 and Good Harbor on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31. A Newf walks out of the water carrying a lot of it, plus salt and sand between the webbed toes. Dry the coat through at home rather than letting it air-dry on the car seat; our how-to on drying a dog after the beach has the full routine.

The AKC's weekly brushing, daily in a shed, is what keeps a Newf off the dematting line. The ears need a look too: the AKC notes that, like all drop-eared dogs, a Newfoundland should have its ears checked regularly for signs of infection. And the jowls need a wipe after meals and long drinks, so the folds are dry more of the day than they are wet.

  1. 01

Rinse the salt and sand out with fresh water, working it between the webbed toes

  2. 02

Squeeze the water out of the trousers, belly and tail feathering, then towel hard

  3. 03

Dry with a pet dryer or a fan on no heat, never a human hair dryer

  4. 04

Part the coat at the neck, belly and tail base to be sure the skin is dry

  5. 05

Wipe and dry the lip folds and jowls

  6. 06

Brush with a slicker and a long-toothed comb once the coat is fully dry

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How much does it cost to groom a Newfoundland in Gloucester?
At Dogtown the bath is $95, the extra-large long-hair tier, and the full service with the tidy of feet, ears and feathering is $120. Shed Release adds $10 during the sheds and nail clipping is $16. The groomer confirms the tier and the total at check-in, and rebooking at pick-up takes $5 off the next visit.
Can a Newfoundland be shaved for the summer?
The AKC's guidance is against it: its double-coat guide says grooming experts generally advise against shaving these breeds, and its article on summer shaving warns of heat stroke, sunburn and patchy regrowth. For a Newf, the summer plan is a bath with Shed Release to clear the loose undercoat, regular brushing, and walks at the cool ends of the day.
Why does my Newfie smell a day after swimming?
Usually because the undercoat never dried. The outer coat sheds water, but once the dog is soaked through, the layer against the skin stays damp for hours, and the AKC notes that drying is what prevents bacteria growth and the wet-dog smell. Dry to the skin after every swim, or book the $95 bath and let the blow-dry do it.
How should I look after my Newfoundland's jowls?
Wipe the lips and the folds after meals and drinks and leave them dry. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that warm, moist lip folds carry more bacteria and a higher risk of infection, and the AKC rates the breed at the top of its drooling scale. Redness, a smell or weeping in a fold is a reason to call your vet.
Can my Newfoundland be groomed at the end of an overnight stay?
Yes. Add the bath or full service to the stay and it is done before pick-up. Suites are $78 a night, and the Deluxe bundle at $15 more takes 15 percent off grooming. Overnight stays need the free evaluation first, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and a current city license.
