What this plover season taught our beach-day routine
Plover season is the first goodbye of the Cape Ann dog year. The birds arrive on Good Harbor in early spring, the signs go up, and on April 1 the biggest dog beach in Gloucester closes to dogs while the rest stay open another month.
The rule
Good Harbor closes to dogs on April 1; the other Gloucester beaches wait until May 1
Gloucester allows dogs on its beaches from October 1 to April 30, with one exception. Good Harbor closes to dogs on April 1 so that piping plovers, a protected shorebird that nests above the high-tide line, can settle without being flushed. Wingaersheek keeps its odd-numbered days through April 30, as do Plum Cove and Cressy.
The rule is enforced, and the reason is real: MassWildlife tracks the state's plover pairs, and dogs on a busy beach are one of the pressures the birds face. These dates are current at the time of writing; the city's beach page carries any change, and the signs at the footbridge are the final word.

What we noticed
April beach dogs come to daycare with a month of energy to spend
The pattern is the same every spring. Dogs who ran Good Harbor on even days all winter lose the run on April 1, and by the second week they arrive at 210 Eastern Ave wound tight. Our handlers match groups by size and temperament, and in April the high-energy groups get longer yard rotations and more water breaks.
The turf does the job the beach did: pools, platforms and room to sprint in a group of 7 to 10. A treadmill session at $10 gives a former beach runner a steady walk, and the sniff room at $7 replaces the wrack line with find-it games. By May the dogs have settled into the summer rhythm.

The routine
Our April routine: beach on odd days, turf on the rest
For a family who still wants sand in April, the routine is simple. Odd-numbered days go to Wingaersheek, where the flats at low tide are wide and the plover fencing is easy to avoid. Even-numbered days, which used to be Good Harbor days, become daycare days or leashed trail days at Ravenswood, where tick season has just begun.
April is also license month. Gloucester licenses from the City Clerk at 9 Dale Ave are due by April 30, with a $20 penalty after, and a current license is part of what we need on file. Manchester-by-the-Sea licenses renew on April 1. Sorting the paperwork and the beach plan in one week saves a second trip.

Why it matters
The birds get the beach for a season, and the dogs get it back in October
Plovers are small, sand-colored and almost impossible to see until they move, which is why the closure is total rather than a leash rule. The same beaches reopen to dogs on October 1, Good Harbor on even days again. Six months feels long in April and short by September.
What the season taught us is to plan for it. Families who book daycare days for April before the closure find their dog settles faster than the ones who wait for the pacing to start. A March evaluation, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, puts a beach dog on the turf the week Good Harbor closes.
