November on Cape Ann is dark by dinner, wet at the edges and busy at the end: the beaches are all open, the ticks are nearly done, and the first big storm and the first big holiday land weeks apart.

Every beach in the region takes a dog in November, at the time of writing. Gloucester runs Good Harbor on even dates and Wingaersheek on odd, with Plum Cove and Cressy any day; Rockport's four beaches ask for leash or direct voice control; Essex has no leash law; Singing Beach checks licenses; Crane Beach wants a leash. Nothing closes until April.
The catch is daylight. After the clocks change in early November, sunset comes before 4:30 PM, so a working household's beach walk is a headlamp walk. Wingaersheek's lot and Good Harbor's footbridge are unlit; a collar light and a reflective leash are the kit.

No license deadline falls in November. The rules that matter are storm rules: a Gloucester storm emergency brings parking bans and closes beach lots, and the city's beach page and the National Weather Service Boston office post closures and coastal flood warnings.
Thanksgiving weekend runs on Dogtown's normal weekly pattern: Sunday is overnight-stay pick-up and drop-off only, 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM, and Saturday windows are 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM. Ask the front desk about the holiday itself.

The first nor'easter of the season usually arrives in November: a day or two of wind off the water, sideways rain or wet snow, storm surge at high tide and a beach reshaped overnight. The AVMA's cold-weather guidance applies as soon as the rain turns cold; a soaked dog in a 40-degree wind chills fast, and short coats need a raincoat.
Tick season runs to the end of November, so the after-walk check continues until the ground freezes. The heat comes on indoors too, and dry air means flaky skin and static in the coat; a moisturizing shampoo at the bath usually settles it.

The Cape Ann festival calendar is quiet in November, and the event is Thanksgiving. The week fills Dogtown's overnight suites at $78 a night, with playgroups by day and 24/7 monitoring at night; the Classic bundle adds a daily pupsicle for $10 a night, and the $700 unlimited membership includes priority holiday reservations.
Dark-walk season is when at-home walks earn their keep. A Dogtown walker takes your dog out at midday for 20, 30 or 60 minutes at $25, $35 or $55, so the dog sees daylight even if you do not, with a photo and a note after every walk. Ask whether we cover your address.
