January is the quietest month on the sand and the hardest on the feet: what is open, what is due, what the weather does to paws, and how Eastern Ave runs when the turf ices.
Beaches this month
Beaches this month: all open, and the date picks the Gloucester beach
Gloucester's dog season runs to April 30, so all of January is yours: even dates mean Good Harbor, odd dates mean Wingaersheek, and Plum Cove and Cressy take a dog on any date. Rockport's four town beaches stay open under leash or voice control, Singing Beach wants a licensed dog and a walk-on fee, and Crane Beach takes leashed dogs through March 31.
The winter beach has its own risks: storm wrack full of frozen fish and dead seabirds, and a tidal creek at Good Harbor that ices at its edges. Keep the leash on near the creek and read the current rule on the city's beach page first.

A Gloucester dog license comes from the City Clerk at 9 Dale Ave: $20 for a spayed or neutered dog plus a one-dollar fee, with a current rabies certificate, late only after April 30, when a $20 penalty applies. Book the rabies booster now if it expires before spring. Manchester-by-the-Sea's license year runs April 1 to March 31.
Our front desk asks for the current city license at the free evaluation and keeps a copy with the vaccination records. A tag that lapses in spring means a phone call before the next daycare day.

Cape Ann cold is damp cold off the water, and a harbor wind strips heat from a short-coated dog fast. The AVMA's cold-weather guidance is plain: shorten time outside for small, thin, old or short-coated dogs, wipe paws after every walk, and treat shivering or lifted feet as the signal to go in.
Nor'easters are the January wild card. A declared snow emergency changes plowing, parking and how anyone reaches Eastern Ave; our snow-emergency answer covers hours and the Pup Van. Sunset comes before 5 PM all month.

No Cape Ann festival lands in January, which suits most dogs. The month's events are private: the first free evaluations of the year, on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment, and the resolution that starts with a puppy. FIRST15 takes 15 percent off a first daycare day.
When the yard is iced, playgroups move to the indoor play floors and a supervised dogPACER treadmill session, a $10 add-on, gives a big dog the miles a salted sidewalk cannot. Daycare is $42 a full day and $33 a half, weekday drop-off runs 6:30 to 9:30 AM, and the Pup Van covers Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea at $10 each way.
