Daycare
Indoor dog daycare in Gloucester, MA: play floors for nor'easters and heat
On Cape Ann the weather decides a lot of dog days: snow driven sideways off the Atlantic in February, a still, heavy afternoon in July. A daycare with only a yard has little to offer on those days, and one with only a room never gets the dogs outside, so this page explains how the day moves between the two at Dogtown.
Who this is for
Indoor floors matter most to dogs whose routine cannot stop for the weather
The commuter's dog is the first case. Its people leave for the train whatever the forecast, and the MBTA's rider rules keep large dogs off the trains at weekday peak hours anyway, so the dog needs somewhere to go at 7 AM in a snowstorm. The young dog is the second: an adolescent lab does not care that it is sleeting, and a day stuck at home with nothing to do tends to end in a chewed baseboard.
Then there are the dogs the weather itself is hard on. Short-coated and small dogs feel the cold quickly, and AVMA's cold-weather guidance is to know their limits and wipe salt and de-icer off their feet after walks. Heavy-coated and flat-faced dogs struggle in heat. For a dog that only needs a break and a meal while you work on a stormy day, a half day at $33, or a 20-minute walk at home for $25 if we cover your address, costs less than a full day.
- Commuters' dogs whose day starts at 6:30 AM in any weather
- Adolescents and working breeds who cannot sit out a storm
- Short-coated, small and senior dogs on the coldest days
- Not needed: a dog that only wants a quick break; a half day or a short walk will do
The rotation
The yard is the default, and the indoor floors take over when the weather says so
On a fair day the groups spend much of their play time outside on the turf yard, with the splash pools and platforms that make it worth the trip. When a nor'easter blows through, the turf ices over or a storm makes the yard a bad idea, the group moves onto the indoor play floors. Groups are matched at the evaluation by size, play style and temperament, and that match does not depend on which floor the group is playing on.
An indoor day is built a little differently. Rest breaks and water stations stay part of every block, and the enrichment add-ons come into their own: the sniff room for scent games in a quiet room, a puzzle game, a lick mat, or a supervised session on the dogPACER treadmill. Book them when you book the day, in the app or at drop-off. Dogtown Academy days, with a trainer's session and fitness work, are another way to give a storm-bound dog a job.

Fair weather: play on the turf yard, the pools and the platforms, with breaks and water
- 02
Rain or a raw wind: the indoor floors are there whenever the yard is not the better place
- 03
Nor'easter or ice: the group plays indoors, with any enrichment add-ons you booked
- 04
Hot, humid afternoon: the splash pools and platform shade outside, the indoor floors out of the sun
- 05
Pick-up: the report card and photos in the app show how the day went
Storms and heat
On a storm morning, check before you drive; on a hot day, the pavement is the hazard
We do not print a fixed storm schedule, because each nor'easter is different. On a storm morning, message the front desk in the Dogtown app or call 978 491-5922 before you set out, read the National Weather Service Boston forecast the evening before, and if the state declares a travel ban, stay home whatever the forecast says about the afternoon. Route 128 over the Annisquam is the main way on and off Cape Ann, so its condition matters more than the snow in your driveway.
Summer brings the opposite problem. Gloucester's beaches close to dogs in the warm months, with Good Harbor off limits from April 1 to September 30 and Wingaersheek from May 1 to September 30, so a dog's best free run disappears just as the sidewalks heat up. Asphalt in full sun can burn pads that are fine on grass, so walk early and on grass, and on the worst days choose a half day and let the pools and the indoor floors do the work.
- The evening before a storm: the NWS Boston forecast
- The morning of: a message in the app or a call to 978 491-5922
- A travel ban: a home day, no exceptions
- A hot day: early walks on grass, and a half day if your dog struggles
Price
Indoors or out, the price is the same: $42 a full day, $33 a half day
The daycare price does not change with the weather. A full day is $42 and a half day $33; packs bring the full day to $40 or $38 and the half day to $30 or $29, and the unlimited membership is $700 a month for Monday to Saturday. Enrichment add-ons are priced per visit and are the easiest way to reshape an indoor day; book them online through MoeGo, in the Dogtown app or at drop-off. Our dog daycare page lists every package.
FIRST15 knocks 15 percent off a new customer's first daycare visit. The free evaluation comes first, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and a current city license. It is worth doing in the fall, before the first nor'easter, so your dog is already cleared on the morning you need it.

Why Dogtown
One 10,000 square foot building holds the yard, the floors and the enrichment, so a storm day is still a full day
The indoor play floors, the outdoor turf yard with its pools and platforms, the sniff room and the treadmill all sit inside one 10,000 square foot building at 210 Eastern Ave, looked after by certified staff. That is what lets a group of 7 to 10 keep playing when the weather turns, and what lets you book the same day in February that you book in May.
Getting here takes a little planning in winter. Weekday windows are 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM; Saturday's are 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM; there is no daycare on Sunday. The Pup Van runs at $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, and on a storm morning it is worth asking the front desk whether the van is on the road before you count on it.
