Holiday overnight stays
How to book holiday boarding on Cape Ann
Holiday overnight stays go wrong in predictable ways: an evaluation left too late, a vaccine that lapses mid-trip, a pick-up planned for a window that does not exist. None of it is hard to avoid with a calendar and an hour of admin in the fall. Here is the order to do it in.
Before you start
Before you start, put the travel dates, the vaccine dates and your dog's status on one page
Write down the night you leave and the day you return, including the travel day itself, since many families drop off the morning they go and collect the morning after they land. Then write each vaccine's expiry date from your vet records. Note whether your dog is already a Dogtown regular or has never been evaluated, because that decides how early you need to start. Last, note whether you will need a groom before pick-up for a house full of guests.
Check the license too. In Gloucester, dog licenses are due by April 30 each year, with renewals online and new licenses by mail or drop box; if you adopted or moved this year, the dog may not have one yet. Dogtown needs a current city license on file alongside the vaccines. Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea license through their own town offices, so check yours early rather than the week before the trip.
- Drop-off and pick-up dates, including travel days
- Expiry dates for Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella
- A current city or town dog license
- New dog or Dogtown regular
- A groom before pick-up, or not
The steps
Eight steps, counted back from the holiday, get a stay confirmed without a scramble
The AKC's advice for any trip is preparation: a vet visit before you leave to update shots and check for health problems, a trial night before a long stay, written instructions on the routine, and the details of your own vet and the nearest emergency hospital. The steps below put that advice in order for a Cape Ann holiday, with Dogtown's windows and requirements filled in. Start at step one the day the trip is real.
The evaluation is the step that cannot be rushed. It runs only on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, by appointment, and it involves a temperament test and a few supervised hours in a group, so a new dog cannot be squeezed in on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. For a Thanksgiving or Christmas stay, a new dog is best evaluated in early fall, with a daycare day or a trial night afterward.
- 01
The day your dates are fixed: book the nights online, in the Dogtown app or by phone, and ask the front desk to confirm them and the drop-off windows around the holiday itself.
- 02
The same day: check every vaccine expiry date against the last night of the stay. If anything is due, book the vet visit now.
- 03
If your dog is new to Dogtown: send the new customer form and book the free evaluation on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM.
- 04
Confirm the city dog license is current and that Dogtown has a copy on file.
- 05
Book a daycare day or a one-night stay before the holiday, so the building and the handlers are familiar.
- 06
Add a Classic or Deluxe bundle, enrichment add-ons or a groom before pick-up to the reservation.
- 07
Write down feeding, medication and routine, with your contact numbers, a backup contact and your vet's details.
- 08
Choose the drop-off and pick-up windows, remembering that Sunday windows are for overnight guests only, 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM.
The booking windows we see
Thanksgiving week tightens first on our calendar, then Christmas to New Year, then the school vacations
We do not publish a booking cutoff, because the answer depends on the dates. What we can describe is the order in which our calendar fills. Thanksgiving week usually tightens first, since the Wednesday and the Sunday around it are heavy travel days. The run from Christmas to New Year follows, with the longest stays of the year. The February and April school vacation weeks, summer weekends, the July 3 fireworks in Gloucester and the Schooner Festival on Labor Day weekend fill early too.
Unlimited daycare members, at $700 a month, have priority on holiday overnight-stay reservations, which matters most when suites are close to full. For everyone else the rule is simple: ask early and get a confirmation for your exact nights. The published suite rate is $78 a night, with the Dogtown Classic at $10 more or the Deluxe at $15 more, and add-ons and the Pup Van at their published prices; confirm holiday dates and terms with the front desk.
- Thanksgiving week: usually the first to tighten
- Christmas to New Year: the longest stays
- February and April school vacation weeks
- July 3 fireworks and Labor Day weekend

Mistakes we see
The mistakes are a late evaluation, a lapsed vaccine and a pick-up window that does not exist
The most common problem is a new dog with nights requested but no evaluation done. The evaluation has to happen first, on a weekday morning, and the weeks before a holiday are when those mornings are hardest to get. The second is a Bordetella or Rabies date that falls in the middle of the stay, discovered at drop-off. Your vet can usually sort it with notice, but not on Christmas Eve.
The third is a return plan built on the wrong window. Dogtown is closed for daycare on Sundays, and Sunday pick-up is for overnight guests only, from 8 to 10 AM or 4 to 6 PM. Hours on the holiday itself are confirmed with your booking rather than assumed from a normal week. Plan the drive home around them, or book the Pup Van at $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex or Manchester-by-the-Sea.
- Requesting nights before the evaluation is booked
- A vaccine that expires during the stay
- Assuming holiday-day hours match a normal week
- Planning a Sunday pick-up outside 8 to 10 AM or 4 to 6 PM
When to call us
Call us if the holiday is close and nothing is booked, or if your dog needs extra planning
If the holiday is a few weeks away and you have no confirmation, call 978 491-5922 rather than waiting for the online calendar. We will tell you what is open for your dates and, for a new dog, how quickly an evaluation can happen. Call as well if your dog takes medication, is a senior, has never stayed away from home or gets anxious with change, so the stay can be planned around it.
For noise-sensitive dogs, the AVMA's advice on fireworks is worth reading before New Year and July 3. A bath before pick-up, from $55 by size, sends your dog home clean for guests, and the Classic and Deluxe bundles take 10 or 15 percent off grooming booked onto the stay. Write the routine down once, send it with the booking, and the holiday itself becomes the easy part.
