Fall, first year
Your dog's first fall on Cape Ann
A dog that arrived in spring or summer has never had a Cape Ann October: the sand reopens, archers and bird hunters move into the woods, and by November the after-work walk happens in the dark. This guide covers what shifts, a two-week setup for early October, and which Dogtown services fit the shorter days.
What changes
Fall reopens the sand, brings hunters into the woods and shortens the walking day
The beaches come back first, town by town. At the time of writing Essex reopens its beaches to dogs on September 1, Rockport after September 15 under its leash or direct voice control rule, Gloucester on October 1 and Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea on October 15, for licensed, vaccinated dogs. Gloucester splits its two big beaches by date: Good Harbor on even-numbered days until March 31 and Wingaersheek on odd ones until April 30. A dog that spent the summer on sidewalks gets wide, cool sand again.
The woods change in the same weeks. MassWildlife's 2026 season summary opens archery deer and fall turkey seasons on October 5, both running to November 28, with pheasant, quail and ruffed grouse from October 17, shotgun deer from November 30 to December 12 and primitive firearms from December 14 to 31. Massachusetts law makes every Sunday a closed season. Then on November 1 the clocks fall back an hour at 2 AM, and the after-work walk moves into dusk overnight.
The coat turns over as well. VCA places the second heavy shed of a double-coated dog in late fall, so the brush fills up again in October and November, just as the dog starts spending more time indoors on your sofa. A dog that blew its coat in spring will do it again now; brushing every day or two keeps most of it off the floor.
- Essex September 1, Rockport after September 15, Gloucester October 1, Singing Beach October 15
- Archery deer and fall turkey October 5 to November 28, 2026; pheasant from October 17
- Every Sunday is a closed hunting season under Massachusetts law
- Clocks back at 2 AM on November 1, 2026
Closer to home
Rodent bait, engine coolant and lawn mushrooms are the fall hazards inside the fence
As the nights cool, mice and rats look for a way indoors, and the ASPCA notes that rodenticide use climbs in the fall as a result. Those baits are highly toxic to pets and can be fatal if eaten, so a bait station in the garage is a real risk to a dog that noses everything at floor height. If you or a pest company use them, place them where the dog cannot reach and tell anyone who walks or minds the dog where they are.
Two more come with the season. Engine coolant gets topped up before winter, and the ASPCA calls ethylene glycol coolants highly toxic and says to clean any spill at once; propylene glycol products are less toxic, though not harmless. Mushrooms pop up on fall lawns, and while the ASPCA says about 99 percent have little or no toxicity, the rare dangerous ones are hard to tell apart, so the safest rule is a dog kept away from any patch. The poison control line is (888) 426-4435, and a fee may apply.
- Rodent bait out of reach, and every walker told where it is
- Coolant spills wiped up at once
- Mushroom patches off limits, whatever they look like
The first two weeks
The first two weeks of October: a beach calendar, orange gear, a daylight walk plan and a brush
October front-loads its changes, so a two-week setup at the start of the month covers most of the season. Beach days come first because the sand is the best thing about a Cape Ann fall, and a dog that has not run loose on a beach since spring needs its recall rebuilt on a long line before it is trusted. Safety gear comes next, because archery season opens on October 5 and a brown dog in brown leaves is hard to see.
The walk schedule is the change most households leave too late. Picture where the dog will be at 4:30 PM in the second week of November, after the clocks change, and decide now whether that hour is a walk with you under a headlamp, a midday walk from home while you are at work, or a daycare day. Then brush: the fall shed spreads through a house fast, and a bath in October clears much of it in one sitting.

Days 1 and 2: write Gloucester's odd and even rule into the calendar and circle the low-tide days you can use
- 02
Days 1 to 4: buy blaze orange for yourself and a vest or bandana for the dog before October 5
- 03
Days 3 to 6: rebuild the beach recall on a long line before any off-leash run
- 04
Days 5 to 8: move rodent bait, coolant and lawn mushrooms out of the dog's reach
- 05
Days 7 to 10: fit a lighted collar and a reflective leash ahead of November 1

Days 10 to 14: decide who covers the late-afternoon walk in November, and book the free evaluation if a walker or daycare is the answer
Where Dogtown fits
A midday walk from home fits the short days, daycare fits the young dog, and the beach run stays with you
At-home walks are the service built for the dark months. A Dogtown walker comes to your door for a solo walk of 20, 30 or 60 minutes, at $25, $35 or $55, and sends a photo and a short note after each one. A midday walk keeps the outing in daylight while you work, and packs lower the price of a standing routine. Every walk client starts with the free evaluation, and because coverage varies by address and season, ask us about yours first. Our dog walking page has the details.
Daycare fits the adolescent dog that a lunchtime walk will not tire, at $42 for a full day on the turf yard and indoor floors at 210 Eastern Ave. What does not fit: a calm dog that gets a low-tide run with you at the weekend and a good walk at lunch needs little from us beyond a bath for the fall shed, from $55 with the $10 Shed Release add-on, and grooming needs no evaluation.
| Walk length | Single walk | 10-pack | 30-pack |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 minutes | $25 | $225 | $637 |
| 30 minutes | $35 | $315 | $892 |
| 60 minutes | $55 | $495 | $1,402 |
