Summer residents with dogs: Rockport, Gloucester and Manchester from June to September
This page is for the households that open the house in Rockport, Annisquam or Manchester every June and close it after Labor Day, dog included. It is not the one-week renter's page; that is the summer visitors page. Here is what a whole summer asks of a dog, and the standing arrangement that gets a family through it.
What changes
A different house, no beach, a fuller social calendar and a hotter yard
The dog moves too. Same family, different kitchen, different stairs, a yard that may or may not be fenced and neighbors it has not met. The beach it may remember from a September visit is now closed to it for the whole stay. The family's days fill with guests, boats and trips into Boston, and the dog spends more hours alone in a strange house than it does at home.
Then the heat. Cape Ann in July is humid, the granite holds warmth into the evening, and the dog needs its walks before eight and after seven. Late June brings St. Peter's Fiesta, the fireworks go up on July 3, and the Schooner Festival fills Labor Day weekend; a dog that shrugs off the Fourth at home can panic in a house whose walls it does not yet trust. A summer dog needs a routine more than a winter dog does.

The plan
Month by month: set it up in May, settle it in June, run it through August, close it in September
May, before the drive: send the new customer form with your summer address and dates, ask your vet for Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records, and book the free evaluation for the first weekday morning after you arrive, between 6:30 and 9:30 AM. June: the evaluation, a first half day at $33 with FIRST15 taking 15 percent off, then the standing pattern. Most summer households settle on two or three daycare days a week; a full-day 10-pack at $380 covers about a month, and the Pup Van collects for $10 each way.
July and August run on the pattern: daycare on the beach and boat days, an overnight suite at $78 a night for the Boston trip, the wedding weekend or the fireworks if the dog cannot bear them. The honest part is the quiet weeks, when the family is home, the guests have gone and the dog has a shaded yard and two early walks; those weeks need nothing from us. September: Rockport's beaches reopen to dogs after September 15 and Gloucester's on October 1, and a bath from $55 before the drive home needs no evaluation.

Cape Ann specifics
Three towns, three beach bans, one evaluation gate and a summer traffic pattern
At the time of writing Gloucester closes its beaches to dogs from May 1 to September 30, Rockport from June 1 to September 15, and Essex for June, July and August; Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea has its own fall-to-spring dog calendar. Rockport also expects a leash or direct voice control anywhere in town. The trails stay open: Dogtown Common, Ravenswood Park and, on a leash, Halibut Point State Park, all best before eight.
The evaluation is the same gate for a summer dog as for a Lanesville dog: a temperament test and a few supervised hours in a group of 7 to 10, weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, before any daycare, overnight or walk. Bring your home town's license along with the vaccine records; the front desk will say what they need to see. Plan drop-offs around Route 128 on a summer Friday, or let the Pup Van do it.

What not to do
Do not test the beach ban at dawn, assume last summer carries over or wait until July to book
Do not walk the dog on Good Harbor at six in the morning in July on the theory that nobody checks; the ban runs all day and the sand is already warming. Do not leave the dog in the car at a beach lot for a quick swim. Do not assume the evaluation your dog passed last summer, or the packs you bought, carry into this one without asking; the front desk will tell you what is on file.
Do not wait until the Fourth of July week to book the evaluation, because summer weekday mornings fill and so do the suites around the fireworks. Do not leave a dog alone in the summer house on the night of July 3, or during Fiesta if you are near the waterfront, without a plan. And do not let the dog's summer become nine weeks of waiting; two set days in a playgroup are what make the other five good.
