Daycare and grooming after surgery: the timeline your vet will sign off on

A spay, a knee, a mass removal and a dental all send a dog home with a cone and a sheet of instructions, and the instructions differ. This page is the order in which walks, grooming and daycare come back, phase by phase, with the vet's sign-off as the gate at every step.

What changes

Restricted movement, an incision, a cone and a dog that is not itself

The dog comes home groggy, sore and confused by the cone. For days it may not eat well, may be unsteady on stairs and may resent being touched near the site. Then it feels better long before it is healed, which is the dangerous week: a dog that wants to run at day five with an incision that closes at day fourteen. Pain medication and antibiotics arrive on a schedule that has to survive your workday.

For a playgroup, everything changes. A cone in a group of dogs is an invitation to investigate; a fresh incision is a target for a paw; a stitched knee cannot take a body check on the turf. A grooming tub is warm water and handling on skin that may not be ready, and a dryer on a shaved surgical site is not a small thing. The vet knows which of these applies to your dog. We do not, and we will not guess.

The plan

Four phases, each opened by the vet's written clearance and confirmed by the front desk

Phase one, restricted: the dog is home, and the only Dogtown service that may fit is a 20-minute solo walk from home at $25 for bathroom breaks, and only if the discharge sheet allows short leash walks; a 10-pack is $225 if recovery is long. Tell the walker what the dog may and may not do. Phase two, leash walks allowed: 20 or 30 minutes at $25 or $35, at the dog's pace, with a photo so you can see how it moved.

Phase three, cleared for bathing: send the front desk the vet's written clearance and book a bath from $55 by size, with the $20 handling surcharge if the dog needs slow steadying, and the antiseptic or fungal shampoo add-on at $8 only if the vet asked for it. Phase four, cleared for play: the front desk confirms our own rule for the case, then a half day at $33 in the calm group before a full day at $42. A new dog does its free evaluation in this phase.

The City of Gloucester publishes a list of local veterinary offices and emergency contacts; that is where your surgeon's after-hours number comes from, and where to look if a suture opens on a Sunday. For anything that cannot wait, Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn is a 24-hour emergency hospital, down Route 128; save the address before you need it.

Cape Ann adds two hazards to a healing dog. Salt water and beach sand in an incision are a problem even when Gloucester's beaches are open to dogs, October 1 to April 30, so the beach waits for the vet too. A dog on restricted walks still picks up ticks from April to November; the AVMA's parasite page covers checking, and a tick beside a shaved surgical site needs your vet, not tweezers. What not to do

Do not hide the surgery, bring a cone to daycare or borrow another dog's timeline

Tell the front desk about the surgery before the next booked day, even if you think the dog is fine; our handlers cannot protect a site they do not know about. Do not bring a dog in a cone or with visible stitches to daycare and hope the group is gentle. Do not bathe at home before the vet clears it because the dog smells of the hospital; a bath from $55 will be there when the skin is ready.

Do not borrow a timeline. A friend's lab was back at daycare ten days after a neuter; your dog's knee is a different surgery with a different sheet. Do not let a dog that feels better at day five run in the yard, and do not skip a medication dose because the day got busy; write the doses out for the walker or the front desk. If the site looks wrong, that is a vet call, and we will say so at drop-off.

How long after surgery can my dog go back to daycare?

When your vet clears the dog for play in writing. Neuters, orthopedic repairs and mass removals heal on different schedules, so we do not publish a waiting period; send the clearance to the front desk and they will confirm Dogtown's own rule for your dog's case. The first day back should be a half day at $33.

Can my dog be groomed with stitches in?

Not until the vet says the site can take water and handling. With that in writing, book a bath from $55 by size and tell the groomer where the site is; the $20 handling surcharge buys the slower pace a sore dog needs. The antiseptic or fungal shampoo at $8 is added only when a vet has recommended it.

Can Dogtown give my dog its post-surgery medication during a daycare day?

Ask the front desk how medication is handled when you book the first day back, and bring the doses written out: drug, amount, time, with food or without.
