Shepherd grooming

German Shepherd grooming in Gloucester, MA

Shepherd owners do not need telling that the breed sheds. What they want to know is how to stay ahead of it, how often a bath actually helps, and how an older dog with stiff hips gets through a groom in comfort. This page answers all three, with the prices.

The coat

A harsh, close outer coat over a softer undercoat that sheds steadily and heavily twice

The AKC describes the German Shepherd's coat as a medium-length double coat: a dense, harsh, close-lying outer coat over a softer undercoat. Day to day it is easy to keep, needing a quick brushing every few days, but the breed sheds more heavily once or twice a year, and the AKC's shedding scale rates it 4 out of 5. Males weigh 65 to 90 pounds and females 50 to 70.

Shed hair that is not brushed out collects in the ruff around the neck, the trousers on the back legs and the underside of the tail, where it can pack against the skin. The AKC says a shepherd needs only an occasional bath. What it does need is the loose undercoat out before it reaches your sofa, and nails kept short: the AKC says to trim or grind them every month if walks do not wear them down.

  • Outer coat: dense, harsh and close-lying
  • Undercoat: softer, shedding steadily and heavily once or twice a year
  • Packs in the ruff, the trousers and under the tail
  • Nails: monthly if walks do not wear them down

The groom

A shepherd needs a bath and de-shed, not a haircut and never a shave-down

A shepherd's coat is not cut, so the bath is the right booking: a warm wash, blow-dry and brush-out, priced by weight, with Shed Release at $10 added when the coat is dropping. Shed Release is the de-shedding treatment and brush-out that takes the loose undercoat out in the studio. The full service adds a haircut, which a standard shepherd coat does not need; nail clipping at $16 and a sanitary trim at $10 cover the tidy-up.

Shaving does more harm than good on this coat. The AKC's article on summer shaving lists the German Shepherd among the double-coated breeds and warns that shaving strips the insulation, raises the risk of heat stroke and sunburn, and lets the faster-growing undercoat crowd out the guard hairs. A breeder quoted in the AKC's shepherd grooming guide would not shave one, because it is hard to get the coat to grow back properly.

The routine

A de-shedding bath at the start of each heavy shed, and few baths in between

The AKC says a shepherd only needs an occasional bath, and a breeder quoted in its shepherd grooming guide goes further: in that breeder's view once or twice a year is sufficient, and the more a shepherd is bathed, the more skin issues tend to follow. So the routine is built around the sheds. Book the bath with Shed Release as each heavy shed starts, keep up the brushing at home, and add a bath in between only when the beach, the mud or a roll in something calls for one.

Skipping the de-shed has a cost. Undercoat left to pack in the ruff and trousers can felt against the skin, and working it out is dematting at $15 per 20 minutes on top of the bath, so 40 minutes of it adds $30 to a $75 bath. Rebook at pick-up, timed to the next shed, and $5 comes off that visit.

Price and seniors

$65 or $75 by weight, and $20 more buys an older shepherd a slower table

The bath is $75 for a shepherd of 51 to 90 pounds, which covers every adult male and most females on the AKC's figures, and $65 for a smaller female of 26 to 50 pounds. Shed Release adds $10, nail clipping is $16 and a sanitary trim $10. The final price is confirmed at check-in after a coat assessment. Unlimited daycare members take 15 percent off grooming, and rebooking at pick-up takes $5 off.

Older shepherds are where handling matters most. The AKC lists hip and elbow dysplasia and degenerative myelopathy among the conditions breeders screen for, and a senior with sore hips or weak back legs can find standing in a tub and on a table hard work. The $20 behavior or handling surcharge buys extra time and a second pair of hands, so the dog is steadied, rested between stages and never rushed. Tell us at booking what your vet has said about the hips and back, and ask how the studio will get your dog into the tub and onto the table.

At home

Between sheds, brush every few days, and let an older dog lie down for it

The AKC's routine is a quick brushing every few days, more often during the heavy sheds. Work down to the skin in the ruff and the trousers, and finish with a comb through the tail. For a senior, brush while the dog lies on its side on a mat rather than asking it to stand, and stop before it tires. Our how-to on de-shedding a double-coated dog at home covers a full session for the weeks the coat is pouring out.

For a shepherd that walks the woods, Cape Ann has plenty: Ravenswood Park in West Gloucester welcomes dogs, and Dogtown Common offers 3,600 acres of trail. Both are tick country from April to November, when a dense coat hides a tick easily, so brush and check after every woods walk. In winter, rinse salt from the feet after salted sidewalks and keep the nails short, since long nails give a stiff older dog poor grip on ice.

  • Brush every few days, more during a heavy shed
  • Let an older dog lie down for brushing
  • A tick check after every woods walk, April to November
  • Short nails for grip on winter ice

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How often should a German Shepherd be bathed?
Less often than most owners think. The AKC says a shepherd needs only an occasional bath, and a breeder quoted in its grooming guide finds once or twice a year enough, with more bathing bringing skin trouble. Book a bath with Shed Release at the start of each heavy shed, and add one in between only after the beach, mud or a roll in something.
My shepherd is eleven and stiff. Can he still be groomed?
Usually, with the pace set by the dog. Tell us at booking about the hips, the back and anything your vet has said. The $20 handling surcharge covers extra time and a second pair of hands so your dog can rest between stages. For many seniors a bath with Shed Release and a nail trim is all the coat needs.
Does a German Shepherd need a full-service groom?
Not usually. Full service adds a haircut, and a standard shepherd coat is not cut. The bath with a blow-dry and brush-out, $65 or $75 by weight, plus Shed Release at $10 during a shed, covers the coat. Nails at $16 and a sanitary trim at $10 handle the tidy-up.
Is my shepherd's bath $65 or $75?
It depends on the scale. Up to 50 pounds is $65 and 51 to 90 pounds is $75. The AKC gives males 65 to 90 pounds and females 50 to 70, so almost every adult male and most females land at $75. A very large male over 90 pounds would be $85. The groomer confirms the band at check-in.
Can my shepherd's de-shedding bath happen on a daycare day?
Yes, once your shepherd has done the free evaluation, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and a current city license. Then add the bath and Shed Release to a $42 daycare day. The Pup Van brings daycare dogs from Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way.
