Daycare for adolescent dogs in Gloucester: 6 to 18 months, managed well

Somewhere after six months, many dogs seem to forget everything they were taught, and the AKC says that is a normal part of the teenage stretch. Daycare can help an adolescent burn energy and keep its dog manners, or it can wind it up, and the difference lies in how the day is run.

Who this is for

Daycare suits the social teenager; Academy suits the one who needs structure as much as play

The bouncy, social teenager is the classic daycare adolescent: big feet, endless energy and a real interest in other dogs. A matched group gives it partners its own size and adult dogs who will tell it, politely, when it has gone too far. The large-breed adolescent needs the same with more rest built in, because the AKC links large and giant breeds to hip dysplasia and warns that both too much and too little exercise can play a part.

Other teenagers need more than a group. The dog whose play has tipped into pinning, mounting or chasing a dog that has asked it to stop is managed but not taught by daycare, and Dogtown Academy or a training program is the better start. The teenager that has started barking or lunging on the leash is a Calm & Connected case. And if the budget is the question, a half day at $33 with training homework does more than a full day of unstructured play.

  • Social, playful and interested in other dogs: daycare
  • Large or giant breed: daycare with plenty of rest, often half days
  • Can play but cannot switch off: Dogtown Academy
  • Leash trouble or growing reactivity: Calm & Connected first

The day

Teenagers wind up faster than they wind down, so the day is built around the comedown

Researchers at Newcastle and Nottingham universities, writing in Biology Letters, found a passing phase of reduced obedience toward owners at around eight months, during puberty, which had generally settled by twelve months. They also cautioned against punishing it. In a group, a teenager's arousal climbs fast: one chase becomes three, and three becomes a dog that cannot hear anyone. Rest breaks between play blocks are what stop that climb, and our team tailors each dog's experience to how it handles the group.

The AKC adds that mental stimulation is particularly important for adolescent dogs with a lot of energy, and that a mentally tired dog is easier to live with. That is what the enrichment add-ons are for: a lick mat at $5, since licking is naturally calming, a puzzle game or the sniff room at $7, or a supervised treadmill session at $10. The report card and photos at pick-up tell you whether the day left your dog loose and tired or wound up.

Intact dogs

Whether an intact adolescent can join a group is decided at the evaluation, so tell us up front

Plenty of healthy adolescents are intact for good reasons. The AKC reports that the health effects of spaying and neutering vary widely by breed, that early surgery is associated with a higher risk of joint disorders in large breeds, and that for large and giant breeds waiting until twelve months or older may be better. The timing is a conversation for you and your vet, not for a daycare website.

What we do not do on this page is give a blanket yes or no. Say on the new customer form that your dog is intact, and mention a female's expected season; the evaluation and the front desk confirm what fits your dog. Note the cost difference in Gloucester, too: at the time of writing the city's licensing page lists $25 for an intact dog against $20 for a spayed or neutered one, plus a two-dollar processing fee, with higher fees announced for 2026.

  • A female's expected season, if you know it

Price and alternatives

$42 for daycare, $89 for an Academy day, and Calm & Connected when the manners need a plan

Daycare is $42 a full day and $33 a half day, with packs at $200 and $380 for five and ten full days; our dog daycare page has the full list. Dogtown Academy is the step up for the teenager who can play but cannot switch off: a structured day of training, enrichment, fitness and play with one-on-one trainer time and a training session every day, at $89 full or $69 half, or $785 for ten full days.

Calm & Connected is the training program our team runs for adolescents, new rescues and adult dogs. It strengthens foundational skills while working on impulse control, minor leash reactivity, stranger concerns, handling sensitivity and real-world reliability, over 4, 6 or 8 weeks of 8, 12 or 16 sessions. Programs are quoted after a short assessment, with sessions from $94, and a program can sit alongside one or two daycare days a week.

Getting here

When the beaches close and the recall goes missing, Eastern Ave opens at 6:30 AM

Adolescence and Gloucester's beach calendar make an awkward pair. Good Harbor is closed to dogs from April 1 to September 30 and off-leash on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31; Wingaersheek is closed from May 1 to September 30 and off-leash on odd-numbered days from October 1 to April 30. The AKC notes that a teenage dog that once stayed close will likely no longer do so, so in the off-season a long line on the sand is wiser than trusting a recall that has gone missing.

Dogtown is at 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester, with weekday drop-off from 6:30 AM. The Pup Van collects for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, which suits a teenager who cannot settle in the back seat; elsewhere, ask us for pricing. Every dog starts with the free evaluation on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, and FIRST15 takes 15 percent off the first daycare visit.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

My dog was easy at five months and is a handful at nine. What happened?
Adolescence, most likely. The AKC says teenage dogs often seem to forget their training, and a Newcastle University study found a dip in obedience to owners around eight months that had generally passed by twelve. Keep training, do not punish the lapses, and give the energy somewhere to go: matched daycare, an Academy day, or a Calm & Connected program.
Do you take intact adolescent dogs?
We do not publish a blanket rule. Tell us your dog is intact on the new customer form, along with a female's expected season, and the evaluation and the front desk confirm what fits your dog. Ask your vet about timing; the AKC notes that for large and giant breeds, waiting until twelve months or older may be better.
Will daycare fix my teenager's recall?
No, and it is not meant to. Daycare gives an adolescent exercise and dog-to-dog manners; recall is taught. Dogtown Academy days include a training session with our trainer, and Calm & Connected works on real-world reliability over several weeks. Until the recall is back, use a long line on off-season beach days at Good Harbor and Wingaersheek.
Should a large-breed teenager do full days?
Not always. The AKC links large and giant breeds to hip dysplasia and warns against too much or too little exercise, so many big adolescents do better on half days at $33, or on full days with enrichment in place of extra play. Ask your vet what suits your dog's joints, and tell us what they said.
How do I know if my teenager needs Academy instead of daycare?
Look at pick-up. A teen that walks out loose and sleeps the evening away is getting what it needs from daycare. One that is wilder at 5 PM than at 8 AM, or whose report card keeps mentioning interruptions, needs structure, which is what Dogtown Academy's training session, fitness work and one-on-one trainer time add for $89 a day.
