Toy terriers

Yorkshire Terrier care on Cape Ann

Yorkies were bred in 19th-century Yorkshire by Scottish weavers who needed a dog to hunt vermin in the mills, and the AKC still calls them friendly, quick and keenly alert. That terrier in a seven-pound body shapes everything from the playgroup to the leash. Our Yorkshire terrier grooming page covers the haircut.

Terrier drive

Terrier drive in a seven-pound dog: brave, busy and quick to start something

A Yorkie was a working ratter before it was a lap dog, and the drive is still there: it chases, digs, barks at the unexpected and rarely backs down from a bigger dog. The AKC recommends early socialization to strange situations, people and other dogs, introduced slowly and kept positive, and says effusive praise and treats work far better with a Yorkie than harsh corrections. A Yorkie that has learned calm greetings is a much easier small dog to live with.

Exercise needs are modest. The AKC suggests moderate walks at a steady pace plus short bursts, such as chasing a ball, and says a short walk twice a day will likely be enough. Dog sports like agility and rally suit the breed's quick mind. On a Dogtown Academy half day, $69, a Yorkie gets a training session with our trainer, scent and puzzle games and a report card, which channels the terrier into something useful.

  • Early, gentle socialization to people, places and dogs
  • Praise and treats rather than harsh corrections
  • Two short walks a day plus a game of chase
  • Academy half days at $69 for the busy terrier mind

Small-dog groups

Small-dog groups: a Yorkie plays with dogs its own size, whatever it thinks

A terrier's confidence does not come with a terrier's body armor. Our playgroups of 7 to 10 dogs are matched by size and temperament at the free evaluation, weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, and a Yorkie belongs with the small dogs, placed with partners whose play suits a seven-pound dog. Tell us at booking if your Yorkie guards toys or picks fights with large dogs; it helps our handlers choose the circle.

A half day at $33 suits most Yorkies, and a half-day 10-pack is $290 for a regular routine. The AKC advises limiting a Yorkie's jumping height, especially as a puppy, to protect the knees, which is worth remembering at home: a ramp to the sofa, and a lift into the car. The fenced Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park has a separate small-dog area for an off-leash run with dogs its size.

The windpipe

A harness, not a collar: the Yorkie's windpipe and knees

VCA lists Yorkshire terriers among the small breeds often affected by tracheal collapse, in which the rings of the windpipe flatten as the dog breathes in. The main sign is a persistent, dry, harsh cough often called a goose honk, which can get worse at night, with excitement, in hot or humid weather, or with pressure on the trachea from a collar. VCA's advice is to use a harness rather than a collar, and it notes that weight management helps reduce the severity.

The AKC names eye anomalies and luxating patella, a slipping kneecap, as the conditions responsible breeders screen for, and recommends patella and eye evaluations; ask the breeder for both results before a puppy comes home. A Yorkie that skips a step on a back leg, coughs on the leash or squints after a windy beach walk is showing you something for your vet. At the groom, teeth brushing adds $10.

The silk coat

The silk coat, in brief: hair that tangles rather than sheds

The AKC compares a Yorkie's coat to human hair and says it should be treated that way: brushed daily if kept long, bathed every week or so, with the hair on top of the head trimmed short or tied up so it stays out of the eyes. A shorter cut means far less daily brushing. Our Yorkshire terrier grooming page explains the puppy cut, the face and the prices; full service is $75 at the small-dog price, and nail clipping is $16.

On Cape Ann the silk collects whatever the season brings. Wet sand from an off-season beach, road salt from a January sidewalk and burrs from a late-summer trail all bind into fine hair quickly, so comb them out the same day rather than waiting for the next groom. Book the next appointment at pick-up and it is $5 off, which keeps the cycle from slipping.

  • Daily brushing for a long coat, per the AKC
  • Head hair trimmed short or tied up to protect the eyes
  • Sand, salt and burrs combed out the same day
  • Rebook at pick-up for $5 off the next groom

Winter and the coast

Winter and the coast: short trips, a warm layer and the beach on the right days

A seven-pound dog in a short trim has little to keep it warm, and the AVMA notes that short-haired and short-legged pets feel the cold faster. In winter, put on a sweater before you open the door, keep potty trips short, and shovel a patch so the dog is not wading in snow deeper than its chest. Road salt and de-icers cling to the legs and belly of a dog this low; wipe and dry them at the door.

The beaches are a cool-season outing. At the time of writing, dogs may use Good Harbor on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31 and Wingaersheek on odd-numbered days from October 1 to April 30, and Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea admits licensed, vaccinated dogs from October 15 to April 14. Keep a Yorkie on a harness and leash near the water, where a wave or a gull can send a small dog the wrong way.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Should a Yorkie wear a harness or a collar?
A harness for walking. VCA lists Yorkshire terriers among the small breeds prone to tracheal collapse, and pressure from a collar on the windpipe can make the cough worse, so VCA advises a harness rather than a collar. A collar can still carry the ID tags. A honking cough is worth a vet visit.
Can a Yorkie join daycare with bigger dogs?
Not with big dogs, whatever the Yorkie thinks of itself. Our playgroups of 7 to 10 are matched by size and temperament, and a Yorkie joins the small dogs after the free weekday evaluation. Half days at $33 suit most, and a half-day 10-pack is $290 for a regular routine.
How much exercise does a Yorkshire terrier need?
Not much, but every day. The AKC suggests a short walk twice a day at a steady pace plus short bursts of play, such as chasing a ball, and says agility and rally suit the breed's quick mind. A half day in the small-dog group or an Academy half day at $69 covers it with company.
Why does the AKC say to limit a Yorkie's jumping?
To help protect the knees. The AKC lists luxating patella, a kneecap that slips out of place, among the conditions breeders screen for, and advises limiting jumping height, especially in puppies. Use a ramp or lift the dog onto the sofa and into the car, and show your vet any skip in the back legs.
Where should I book a Yorkie haircut?
No evaluation is needed for grooming, so book online or in the Dogtown app whenever it suits you. Our Yorkshire terrier grooming page covers the puppy cut, the face and the ear tips, with full service at $75 at the small-dog price. You can also add the groom to a daycare day.
