Goldendoodles on Cape Ann: the coat, the energy and the groom schedule
The goldendoodle is the dog our team meets most, on the turf and on the table. This is the breed guide rather than the grooming menu: how the coat behaves in salt, sand and burrs, how the energy shows up in a group, and what a doodle needs from a year on this coast.
The coat
A doodle coat felts at the friction points first, and the calendar sets the bill
Goldendoodle coats land anywhere between a golden's straight feathering and a poodle's tight curl, and two pups from one litter can wear different textures. Whatever the texture, the coat felts where it rubs. Behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits and between the back legs, soft undercoat rolls into pads that sit flat against the skin, and those spots are the first thing our groomers check when a doodle steps onto the table.
Removing those pads is de-matting, charged at $15 per 20 minutes on top of the groom. A doodle who missed one cycle usually needs a single block. A doodle who spent the winter in a sweater and a harness can need several, and at that point a short, even clip is kinder than an afternoon of pulling. As general groomer practice, a six-to-eight-week cycle keeps that line off the bill.
Full service is priced by weight. A mini under 25 pounds is $75, the common 26-to-50-pound doodle is $85, a standard of 51 to 90 pounds is $110, and over 90 pounds is $120. A bath alone runs $55 to $85 by the same bands, with a $95 tier for an extra-large long coat.

Energy
Bouncy, social and a little clumsy: the goldendoodle in a group of 7 to 10
Most goldendoodles arrive at the evaluation as the friendliest dog in the lobby, and that is the trait we manage. They greet with the whole body, bounce rather than sprint, and want every dog in the game. In a matched group of 7 to 10 that is an asset: a doodle will pull a shy dog into a slow chase and then flop down beside it. Our handlers place doodles by size as much as temperament.
The doodle who struggles is the adolescent who has never been asked to stop, when the bounce becomes jumping on people and pestering dogs who have said no. For that dog a Dogtown Academy day, $89 full or $69 half, puts a trainer in the room for settle work, a treadmill session and one-on-one time that teaches an off switch. A doodle who is wary of other dogs rather than overeager starts in Adventure Academy, the path for dog-selective dogs.
This coast
Salt, sand and burrs undo a doodle coat, and Cape Ann has all three
Gloucester beaches open to dogs from October 1 to April 30, Good Harbor on even-numbered days and Wingaersheek on odd, and a doodle loves them. The trouble begins in the car on the way home. Salt water dries into the undercoat, sand works down to the skin, and by morning the damp coat has started to felt. The fix is fresh water to the skin, a firm towel, then a dryer or a long brush-out until the coat is dry through.
Inland is no easier. Dogtown Common and Ravenswood Park turn into burr country from late summer, and a fleece coat collects burrs the way a sock collects lint. Tick season runs April through November here, and a curly coat hides a tick better than almost any other. On nor'easter days the coat is wet through in minutes, so our groups move to the indoor play floors until the turf drains.

Health notes
Ears, skin and the myth of the allergy-free dog
Our team watches doodle ears. A floppy ear over a hairy canal holds water after every swim and bath, and the first sign is a dog shaking its head at pick-up or rubbing one ear along the turf. We flag it and your vet decides what to do. Ask about trimming the ear hair at the groom, and ask your vet whether a drying ear rinse after swimming makes sense for your dog.
Skin under a felted coat cannot breathe, and when a mat comes off our groomers often find a red or warm patch beneath it, which is a vet conversation if it keeps returning. One more thing, said plainly: no dog is allergen-free, whatever the listing promised. Goldendoodles shed less than a golden, but the American Kennel Club is clear that the coat is not a cure, so spend time with the actual dog before you decide.

The practical setup for a goldendoodle is a daycare day with the groom booked onto it. Our team pulls your doodle from the group, baths and cuts, then settles the dog in a rest spot for pick-up between 4 and 6:30 PM. You pay the $42 day plus the groom and make one drive instead of two, or none if the Pup Van collects in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex or Manchester-by-the-Sea at $10 each way.
Start with the free evaluation, weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, bringing Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and a current city license. Grooming needs no evaluation, so a new doodle can be on the table this week and in a playgroup the next. Overnight guests on the Dogtown Classic bundle take 10 percent off a groom during the stay, which suits a doodle whose family would rather come home to a finished coat.
