German shepherds on Cape Ann: structure, neutrality and the double coat

Shepherds are working dogs first and companions second, and a bored one invents work you did not want done. Our handlers, groomers and trainers see the breed and its mixes every week at 210 Eastern Ave. This is what a shepherd needs here, from the playgroup to the table to the training room.

Structure and neutrality

A shepherd needs the day to have a shape, and a group it can ignore

German shepherds were bred to herd, guard and take direction, and the breed still wants a person in charge of the plan. Left to structure its own day, a shepherd patrols: it watches the door, follows you room to room and escalates at anything unexpected. Given walk, work, rest and play in a predictable order, the same dog becomes the calm, watchful adult the breed is famous for. Adolescence, roughly 6 to 18 months, is when that order matters most.

In a group, a shepherd's success looks different from a Lab's. The goal is a dog that can share a yard with nine others, play with two or three it likes and be neutral about the rest. Our handlers build that by placing shepherds with steady dogs who do not push for interaction, in a calm large group of 7 to 10 rather than the boisterous one. A shepherd that fixates, herds or guards its handler is not a failed dog; it takes a structured path first.

  • Walk, work, rest and play in the same order every day
  • A settle on a cot or mat, taught early and rewarded often
  • Placed with steady dogs who do not push for play
  • Fixating or herding means a structured path, not a no

The coat

The double coat sheds all year, blows twice, and comes off with a bath, not a clipper

A shepherd coat is a dense undercoat under a straight, harsh outer coat. It sheds every day of the year and lets go heavily for a few weeks each spring and fall. A bath at Dogtown for a dog of 51 to 90 pounds is $75, or $65 for a smaller female under 50 pounds, and Shed Release adds $10. Our groomers' general practice is a bath every 6 to 10 weeks, with Shed Release booked in the first week of each blow, usually late March and late September here.

There is no haircut in a shepherd's grooming. We do not shave double coats, because the outer coat protects the skin from sun on the turf and from the January wind off the harbor, and it can grow back thin and uneven. What matters instead is nail clipping at $16, since a shepherd's rear angulation wears the nails unevenly, and a sanitary trim at $10 for long-coated dogs, who also need a comb behind the ears and on the pants between baths.

This coast

Woods, off-season beaches and ticks are the shepherd's Cape Ann

Shepherds are trail dogs more than beach dogs. Ravenswood Park in West Gloucester, a Trustees property, welcomes dogs and gives a shepherd the long, structured leash walk it likes best; Dogtown Common gives it 3,600 acres of woods and boulders. Both are tick country from April to November, and a dense coat hides a tick well. Run your hands through the ruff, armpits and toes after every woods walk, and ask our groomers for a tick check on the table.

The beaches are a winter treat. Gloucester's beaches take dogs from October 1 to April 30, with Good Harbor on even-numbered days until its plover closure on April 1 and Wingaersheek on odd-numbered days. The Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park has a separate large-dog area for a shepherd whose recall is not yet sure. Cold rarely bothers this breed; a dry shepherd in full coat is comfortable on a February beach that sends a short-coated dog back to the car.

  • Ravenswood Park and Dogtown Common for the long leash walk
  • Hands through the ruff, armpits and toes after every woods walk, April to November
  • The large-dog side of the Gloucester Dog Park while recall is still a project

What we watch

Health notes our team watches for on a shepherd

Joints are the thing. The AKC's breed guidance lists hip and elbow evaluations as the screening responsible breeders do, and our handlers watch how a shepherd gets up, lands and turns. We steer shepherds away from repetitive jumping off the platforms and pools, and a dog that is stiff after a long day gets a quieter group next time. None of that is a diagnosis: if your shepherd is slow to rise, bunny-hops at a run or hesitates on stairs, ask your vet before booking more hard play.

The other watch points are the stomach and the skin. Shepherds are deep-chested, and a large meal followed by hard play is a combination we avoid; skip the big breakfast right before the 6:30 to 9:30 AM drop-off and feed at home after pick-up instead. Hot spots and itchy skin appear under a dense coat in the humid weeks of July and August, and a bath with antiseptic shampoo at $8 helps once your vet has ruled out the cause.

Dogtown for shepherds

Which Dogtown day fits your shepherd

There are three paths, and the evaluation usually points to one. Open daycare at $42 a full day or $33 a half suits the socially neutral adult that needs exercise and company. Dogtown Academy at $89 or $69 suits the adolescent, the working-line dog and any shepherd that needs a daily job, because its rotation of training, treadmill, scent work and a settle is the structure the breed asks for. Calm & Connected, the Level 2 training program for adolescents, rescues and adults, suits the dog whose impulse control or reaction to strangers needs work first.

Grooming runs alongside all three: book the Shed Release bath onto a daycare or Academy day and the dog goes home lighter and calmer. The Pup Van runs to Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea at $10 each way. And a shepherd not ready for any group can still have a solo walk from home after the same evaluation, while the training catches up.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is a German shepherd a good daycare dog?
Many are, and some are better Academy dogs. A shepherd that can be neutral around other dogs and settles when asked usually does well in a calm large group. One that fixates, herds or guards its handler is not a bad dog, but it needs the structure of Dogtown Academy or the Calm & Connected program before open play. The free evaluation tells us which.
How much does it cost to groom a German shepherd at Dogtown?
A bath for a shepherd of 51 to 90 pounds is $75, or $65 for a dog of 26 to 50 pounds, and includes the blow-dry and brush-out. Add Shed Release for $10 during the spring and fall blows, nail clipping for $16 and a sanitary trim for $10 if you want one. Grooming needs no evaluation.
Should I shave my shepherd in the summer?
No. The outer coat protects the skin from sun and holds cool air against it, and the undercoat is what sheds out with a good bath and de-shed. A shaved shepherd can come back with a patchy coat for a year or more. For a Cape Ann July, book the Shed Release bath, walk early and late, and let the pools do the cooling.
Does Dogtown take German shepherd mixes and rescues?
Yes, and shepherd mixes are among the most common dogs on our turf. A rescue with an unknown history goes through the same evaluation as any other dog, and our handlers take extra time watching how it reads strangers and other dogs. If it is not ready for a group, Calm & Connected or a solo at-home walk gives it a place to start.
