Dog boarding on the North Shore, MA

A trip is a bad time to discover that your dog has never done a group evaluation. This page covers what an overnight stay at Dogtown includes, what it costs with the two bundles, and how to fit the evaluation and the drive up Route 128 around your travel dates.

Who books a stay

North Shore dogs come to Gloucester for a stay when they need company all day, not a bowl filled twice

From Beverly, Danvers, Peabody and Salem the drive is Route 128 north to its end, about 25 to 35 minutes outside rush hour by our estimate. If you are flying from Logan, remember that Gloucester lies the opposite way from the airport, about 60 minutes north outside rush hour by our estimate, so the drop-off belongs on the evening before the flight rather than the morning of it. The weekday evening window runs 4 to 6:30 PM, and Saturday's runs 4 to 6 PM.

From Ipswich, Route 133 through Essex joins Route 128 in West Gloucester, about 30 minutes in all. Whatever the town, the dogs who settle best here are the ones who enjoy other dogs, because the day is spent in a playgroup of 7 to 10 matched by size and temperament. A dog who finds groups stressful may be happier with a sitter at home, and the free evaluation is where that tends to show, which is one more reason to do it early.

  • Dogs who enjoy a playgroup and settle well at night
  • Trips that start at Logan: drop off the evening before
  • Owners who want a bath or groom done before pick-up
  • Daycare regulars, who already know the building and the handlers

The price

A suite is $78 a night, and two bundles add $10 or $15 a night

Every overnight stay is $78 a night. That rate covers the suite, the daycare playgroups by day, daily exercise, socialization with like-sized dogs and 24/7 monitoring. Bundles sit on top of it. For $10 more a night, the Dogtown Classic brings a homemade pupsicle or puppy cup every day and takes 10 percent off grooming. Dogtown Deluxe adds $15 a night for a gourmet stuffed Kong or Toppl, a daily treadmill or enrichment session, an upgraded orthopedic memory-foam bed and 15 percent off grooming.

Single enrichment add-ons run $5 to $10, from a lick mat to a supervised treadmill session, and can go onto any night of the stay. A bath before pick-up starts at $55 for a dog up to 25 pounds, and the bundle discounts apply to it. Ask the front desk about deposits, cancellations and holiday dates when you book; we confirm those terms directly with you rather than printing them on this page.

Before the trip

Do the free evaluation on a weekday morning well before the trip, then reserve the nights

Every dog new to Dogtown completes a free evaluation before its first overnight stay: a temperament test, then a few supervised hours in a group, Monday to Friday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment. It cannot happen on a Saturday or on the morning of a flight. Leave it until the week of the trip and you are squeezing a weekday morning into the busiest week of your year, so book it when you book the tickets, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and your town's dog license ready.

If your dog has never slept away from home, a daycare day or two before the stay is worth the drive. It lets your dog learn the building, the handlers and its group while you are still a phone call away, so the first night is not also the first day. For the stay itself, pack pre-portioned food and one small comfort item such as a blanket; we provide the bedding, enrichment is a paid add-on or part of a bundle, and if your dog takes medication ask the front desk before you book. Go through the medication schedule with the front desk at drop-off.

Why Dogtown

The difference is the day: your dog spends it in a matched group, then sleeps in a suite

A stay at Dogtown is built so the suite is where your dog sleeps, not where it waits. During the day overnight guests join the same matched playgroups as the daycare dogs, on the indoor floors or the turf yard with its pools and platforms, with certified staff running the groups. At night they settle in a quiet suite, and the building is monitored around the clock. For a sociable dog, company all day is the point, and it is what you are driving to Gloucester for.

Massachusetts is also changing the rules for facilities like ours. Ollie's Law was signed on September 20, 2024 and took effect on December 19, 2024; it directs MDAR to write regulations for commercial boarding and training kennels, and as of the advisory committee's March 18, 2026 minutes those regulations had not been released. Until they are, ask any place you are considering, us included, how days and nights are supervised, and expect a plain answer.

  • A suite to sleep in, a playgroup of 7 to 10 to spend the day in
  • 24/7 monitoring through the night
  • Grooming on site, 10 or 15 percent off with a bundle
  • Enrichment add-ons from $5 on any night

Getting here

Route 128 brings you here from most of the North Shore, and Sunday keeps two windows for overnight guests

Drop-off and pick-up for a stay use the same windows as daycare: weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, and Saturdays 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM. Sunday is closed for daycare but open to overnight guests from 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM, which suits a family landing at Logan on a Sunday afternoon and driving straight up Route 128 to collect the dog on the way home.

The Pup Van covers Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea at $10 each way; from Beverly, Danvers, Peabody, Salem or Ipswich, ask us for pricing. Bringing a dog on the Rockport line works only off-peak: the MBTA keeps larger dogs that do not fit in a carrier off its trains on weekdays from 7 to 9 AM and 4 to 7 PM, and asks riders to avoid bringing pets during holidays and large events, which rules out most travel weekends.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is an overnight stay the same thing as dog boarding?
Yes. Overnight stay is our name for boarding at Dogtown. What sets it apart is the day: guests join matched daycare playgroups, then sleep in a suite at night with 24/7 monitoring. The rate is $78 a night, with the Dogtown Classic at $10 more a night and Dogtown Deluxe at $15 more.
My flight leaves Logan at 6 AM. When do I drop off?
The evening before. Weekday drop-off windows close at 6:30 PM and Saturday's at 6 PM, and Gloucester is about 60 minutes north of the airport outside rush hour by our estimate, so a morning drop-off cannot work with a dawn flight. The extra night is $78, which costs less than a missed plane.
Can I collect my dog on a Sunday?
Yes. Sunday is closed for daycare, but overnight guests can be dropped off or picked up from 8 to 10 AM and from 4 to 6 PM. If you are back too late for the afternoon window, the next chance is Monday from 6:30 AM, so plan for your dog to stay one more night.
How far ahead should we do the evaluation?
As soon as the trip is booked. Evaluations run on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment, and they need Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and your town's current dog license. Leaving room also gives you time to make another plan if the evaluation suggests group days are not right for your dog.
Can my dog be groomed before I pick up?
Yes. A bath runs $55 to $95 and a full-service groom $75 to $120, by size, and either can be booked for the end of a stay so your dog comes home clean. Grooming needs no evaluation of its own. The Classic bundle takes 10 percent off the groom and Deluxe takes 15 percent off.
