Anxious dogs, overnight
Boarding for anxious dogs in Gloucester: quiet suites, familiar routines
An anxious dog rarely needs a different building so much as a slower start and people who are paying attention. This page explains the one firm rule, why we push daycare before the first night, what a short first stay looks like, the stress signals our team reads, and when a sitter at home is the better plan.
The rule and the advice
The evaluation is the only rule; daycare first is our advice, and this is why
Every dog completes the free evaluation before an overnight stay: a temperament test, then a few supervised hours in a playgroup, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM. That is the requirement. No rule says a dog must log a number of daycare days before its first night, and a confident adult can go straight from the evaluation to a stay.
For an anxious dog we advise against doing that. A first night stacks up new things: a new building, new dogs, new handlers, a new room and your car pulling away. Taken together they can tip a nervous dog over; taken one at a time, each is manageable. A daycare day, $42 for a full day or $33 for a half, removes most of the stack, so that on the first night the only new thing is the suite.
Tell us about the anxiety before the evaluation, on the new customer form and again at the door. Our team evaluates each dog's behavior and tailors its experience, and that only works when we know what we are looking at: a dog that paces when you leave, one that will not eat away from home, one that startles at every door.
- Required: the free evaluation, weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM
- Advised for anxious dogs: one or two daycare days before the first night
- Describe the anxiety on the form and again at the evaluation
A short first stay
Start with one night in a quiet week, then read the report card before booking more
We do not publish a separate trial-night policy. A short first stay is a one-night booking at the regular $78, chosen for a quiet week rather than the week of your trip. Pick a weeknight or a Saturday well away from Fiesta weekend and July 3, drop off in the morning window so your dog has a whole day in its group first, and collect the next day. Ask the front desk whether anything about a first night is handled differently for your dog.
Then read the report card in the Dogtown app with three questions in mind. Did your dog eat? Did it settle in the suite, and how quickly? How did it play on the second morning compared with the first? A dog that ate, slept and played is ready for a longer stay. A dog that skipped dinner and paced is telling you something, and our team will tell you plainly what they saw.

What we watch for
The signs of stress are small and early, and reading them is what the evaluation is for
The AKC lists the signals any handler reads: yawning when the dog is not tired, lip-licking, panting when it is not hot, pacing, a tucked tail, ears pinned back, whale eye, where the whites of the eyes show, looking away and freezing. One sign alone means little; several together, or one that will not fade, says the dog is struggling. The AKC's advice is to find the trigger and remove it where you can.
That is how our handlers use the evaluation and every day of a stay: as a record of what your dog does when it is uneasy and what helps it recover. A dog that freezes in a lively group may loosen up in a calmer one. A dog that will not eat with others close by should be flagged at booking so the team can plan around it. Enrichment gives an anxious mouth a job: a lick mat at $5, a frozen Kong at $6, or the daily stuffed Kong or Toppl in the Dogtown Deluxe bundle at $15 a night.
- Yawning, lip-licking or panting out of context
- Pacing, a tucked tail or ears pinned back
- Whale eye, looking away or freezing
- Several signs together, or one that will not fade
When to choose a sitter
A sitter in your own home is the kinder answer for some anxious dogs
We would rather lose a booking than put a dog through a week it cannot manage. A dog whose fear is of other dogs, rather than of being left, will spend a playgroup day coping instead of resting. A dog that panics when confined, stops eating for more than a day away from home, or has hurt itself trying to escape needs its own house and a vet's input before any stay. So may an older dog whose confusion grows in unfamiliar places.
For those dogs, a trusted sitter who sleeps at your house keeps the smells, the bed and the routine intact. Overnight sitting is not on our published menu, but our solo at-home walks, $25 for 20 minutes, $35 for 30 and $55 for 60, add a familiar face in the middle of the day after the same evaluation; ask whether we cover your address. If the anxiety itself is the problem, our training programs, Calm & Connected or React Less, Relax More among them, work on it before the next trip.
- Afraid of other dogs, not of being alone
- Panics in confinement or has been injured escaping
- Will not eat away from home for more than a day
- Needs a vet's plan before any stay
Price and the goodbye
The steps cost little next to the trip, and the goodbye can happen at your own door
The suite is $78 a night for every guest, with no surcharge for an anxious dog on the published price list. Bring your dog's own food, pre-portioned, and one comfort item that smells of home; familiar food and a familiar smell do more for a nervous dog than anything we could add. Our overnight stays page lists everything the nightly rate covers.
For many anxious dogs the hardest minute is the handover. The Pup Van collects at your door for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so the goodbye happens on your own step and the arrival is with a handler. A dog that fears the car should be driven by you instead. Either way, keep the goodbye short and the routine identical every time, down to the leash and the blanket.
