Corgi grooming
Corgi grooming in Gloucester, MA
The AKC describes the Pembroke's coat as a thick, weatherproof double coat that sheds a fair amount every day, and more in late spring and early summer. A corgi does not need a haircut; it needs the loose undercoat out. Here is the bath-and-blow-dry routine, the trim that tidies the pants, and why shaving does not help.
The coat
A corgi sheds every day because its undercoat is always turning over
The Pembroke standard describes a short, thick, weather-resistant undercoat under a coarser, longer outer coat, with a fuller ruff around the neck and chest and longer, fuller hair on the rear of the hindquarters. The Cardigan's coat is much the same, with the longer hair on the backs of the thighs forming what its standard calls pants. Both standards call it a shedding coat, and the AKC scores the Pembroke at four on its five-point shedding scale.
The AKC places the Pembroke's heaviest shed in late spring and early summer. Loose undercoat that is not brushed out collects in the ruff and the pants and holds sand, salt and grit, and on a dog this low to the ground the chest and belly collect the most. A long-coated corgi, the coat the Pembroke standard calls a fluffy, has exaggerated feathering on the ears, chest, legs, feet and hindquarters, and it needs more brushing than a standard coat.
- Undercoat: short, thick and weather resistant, and always shedding
- Outer coat: coarser and longer, lying flat on the body
- Ruff and pants: the longer hair at the neck and the backs of the thighs
- Fluffy coats: long feathering that needs extra brushing
Bath and blow-dry
The corgi groom is a bath, a blow-dry and a brush-out, with Shed Release in a shed
Our bath is a warm wash, a blow-dry and a brush-out, which follows the routine the AKC describes for the breed's shedding season: baths to loosen the dead hair, the dog dried completely before brushing begins, then a rake to strip out the undercoat. Shed Release, $10 on top of the bath, adds a de-shedding treatment and brush-out aimed at that loose layer. When your corgi is leaving tufts on every rug, that is the add-on to book.
Book the full service when the edges have grown untidy: hair between the pads, ragged pants or the long feathering on a fluffy coat. The full service is the bath plus a breed-specific or custom trim, $85 for a corgi of 26 to 50 pounds and $75 below that. For the show ring both standards allow little more than tidying the feet; for a pet, a neater set of pants is a reasonable request, and the AKC notes that keeping the hair on the bottom of the feet trimmed cuts the dirt a dog carries into the house.
No shaving
Shaving a corgi does not stop the shed and can spoil the coat
The AKC's Cardigan page is plain about it: some owners mistakenly think the dog should be trimmed short for summer, and when the coat is correct for the breed that is unnecessary, because the coat keeps body temperature where it should be in normal conditions. The AKC adds that shaving a double coat removes the insulating layer, exposes the skin to sunburn and can leave the coat patchy as the faster undercoat crowds out the guard hairs.
Shaving also does nothing about the shedding itself, since the undercoat keeps turning over at a shorter length. What makes a corgi more comfortable in a Cape Ann July is a coat with the dead undercoat removed, plus shade and water. The AKC adds one caution for darker coats: a black dog absorbs more heat on a sunny day, so take care in hot weather. A bath with Shed Release is the summer booking; any trimming stays on the feet and pants.
- No summer shave-down; the coat insulates against heat as well as cold
- Shed Release at $10 to remove dead undercoat instead
- Feet and pants tidied in the full service
- Shade and water on hot days, especially for dark coats
Price and timing
A corgi bath is $55 or $65 by weight, with Shed Release at $10
Grooming is priced by weight, and the AKC's figures put corgis on both sides of our 25-pound line: Pembroke males up to 30 pounds and females up to 28, Cardigan males 30 to 38 and females 25 to 34. Up to 25 pounds, the bath is $55, $65 with Shed Release and $75 for a full service. From 26 to 50 pounds, the bath is $65, $75 with Shed Release and $85 for a full service. The sanitary trim is $10 and nail clipping $16.
For a double coat our general guidance is a professional bath every six to twelve weeks, nearer six while the dog is shedding hard. Skipping one lets undercoat pack into the pants and ruff, and anything felted is worked out at $15 per 20 minutes. Booking the next bath at pick-up takes $5 off it. Overnight guests on the Dogtown Classic bundle save 10 percent on grooming, and Deluxe guests and unlimited daycare members save 15 percent. The full add-on list lives on our dog grooming page.

At home
Between grooms, a quick daily once-over and a dry belly after the beach
For the Pembroke, the AKC recommends a daily once-over with a comb and a slicker brush, which removes a lot of the shed hair before it spreads through the house; for the Cardigan it suggests a good brushing at least once a week. In a heavy shed, rake after a bath, and only once the coat is completely dry. Our how-to on de-shedding a double-coated dog at home covers the tools step by step.
Good Harbor and Wingaersheek reopen to dogs on October 1, and a corgi's chest and belly ride low enough to drag through wet sand. Rinse the salt off with fresh water and dry the underside before you brush. The AKC lists regular nail trims for both breeds and weekly ear checks for the Pembroke, and warns against letting a long-backed Cardigan jump down off the bed or couch. Tick season runs April to November, and the ruff and pants hide them well.
