Stay or travel
Dog boarding vs bringing your dog on vacation
A dog on vacation can be the best part of the trip or the reason half of it gets cancelled. The difference is usually settled before you leave: where you are going, what the rules there allow, and how your dog copes with a car, a strange room and a long day of being left out of things.
Cost comparison
The real cost of bringing your dog is fees, limits and the plans you drop
Our side of the ledger is easy to state: an overnight stay is $78 a night, with the Dogtown Classic at $10 more and the Dogtown Deluxe at $15 more, and the daytime playgroups are included. Four nights in a plain suite come to $312. The cost of bringing your dog is harder to see, because it is spread across the trip: a pet fee at the rental or hotel, which many properties charge per night or per stay, a crate or a bigger car, and the restaurant tables, tours and beaches you skip because the dog cannot come.
Ask every property for its pet fee and rules in writing before you book, including weight limits, how many dogs are allowed and whether a dog may be left alone in the room. Then add the cost in hours. Every activity that excludes dogs means one person stays behind, or the dog waits in a room it does not know, and that is the line most families forget to price.
| Factor | Overnight stay at Dogtown | Dog comes on the trip |
|---|---|---|
| Nightly cost | $78; Classic +$10, Deluxe +$15 | The property's pet fee, where dogs are allowed at all |
| Days | Matched playgroups of 7 to 10 dogs | Wherever the itinerary allows dogs |
| Rules to check | Free evaluation, vaccines and a city license | Pet policy, leash limits, beach and trail closures |
| Time alone | A suite at night with 24/7 monitoring | Ask the property; many limit unattended dogs |
| Getting there | Pup Van at $10 each way in four Cape Ann towns | Hours in the car, rest stops and a secured crate or harness |
| Best fit | City trips, flights, busy itineraries, dogs who hate the car | Cabin weeks, hiking trips, dogs who travel calmly |
Rules on the road
Popular New England trips have dog rules that shape the itinerary
Check the rules at the destination before you pack the dog bed. In Acadia National Park, federal law requires pets on a leash no longer than 6 feet at all times. Sand Beach is off limits to pets from June 15 to September 8 and Echo Lake from May 15 to September 15, several cliff and ladder trails such as the Precipice and the Beehive are closed to pets, and the park asks visitors never to leave a pet unattended, including at a campsite or in a car. A fit dog still has plenty of trail, just not every stop on a typical Maine itinerary.
Cape Cod National Seashore also requires a 6-foot leash, keeps pets off lifeguarded beaches in summer and closes its walking trails to pets except Doane and Pilgrim Spring. Posted shorebird nesting areas are closed to pets, with recurring closures at several beaches from April 1 to October 15, and freshwater ponds are closed to pets from May 15 to October 15. A summer week on the Outer Cape with a dog is a week of early walks and quiet afternoons.
Crossing into Canada adds paperwork on the way home. At the time of writing, the CDC requires a dog entering or returning to the United States from a low-risk country such as Canada to be at least 6 months old, to carry a microchip a universal scanner can read and to have a CDC Dog Import Form receipt. A puppy under 6 months cannot make that return trip, which settles the question for a young dog.
- Acadia: 6-foot leash; Sand Beach and Echo Lake closed to pets in summer
- Cape Cod National Seashore: 6-foot leash; most trails and lifeguarded beaches off limits
- Canada: 6 months old, a microchip and a CDC Dog Import Form receipt to come home
- Rentals and hotels: pet fee, weight limit and unattended-dog rule in writing
The dog that hates travel
Some dogs are better off at home, whatever the itinerary
Some dogs tell you plainly that travel is not for them. The dog who drools, pants or vomits within twenty minutes in the car, the dog who paces all night in any room that is not its own, the reactive dog who has to be steered past every other dog on a crowded boardwalk, the senior who needs its own bed and no stairs: these dogs spend a vacation coping. An overnight stay asks them to adjust to one place they have already visited, instead of three new places in a week.
Other dogs are built for the road. A fit adult who hops into the car, settles in a crate at a rental and loves a long hike is good company on a cabin week or a fall trip north, as long as the plan centers on places where dogs are welcome. If you are not sure which dog you have, one weekend away is a cheap test before the long trip, and it shows you how the dog sleeps somewhere new.
- Stays home: carsick, anxious in new rooms, reactive in crowds, frail seniors
- Comes along: calm in the car, settles in a crate, fit for the planned walks
- Too young for Canada: puppies under 6 months
- Not sure: test with one weekend away first
Before you go
If your dog stays behind, set up the overnight stay two weeks ahead
A first overnight stay goes best when it is not the first visit. Every dog completes the free evaluation, a temperament test and a few supervised hours in a group on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and a current city license on file. After that, a daycare day or two lets the yard and the handlers become familiar before the first night away.
Pack pre-portioned food and one comfort item such as a blanket; we provide the bedding, and ask the front desk how medication is handled before the stay. Overnight guests can add enrichment from $5, or a bath before pick-up so your dog comes home clean. On Sundays, overnight drop-off and pick-up run 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM, which suits a weekend departure or a Sunday-evening return from the airport.
- 01
Book the free evaluation at least two weeks before the trip
- 02
Add a daycare day so the building is familiar before the first night
- 03
Book the nights, a bundle if you want one, and the Pup Van if you need it
- 04
Portion the food into daily bags and write out any medication doses
- 05
Pack one comfort item and leave the bulky bed at home
- 06
Add a bath for pick-up day and check in through the Dogtown app while you are away
Cape Ann timing
Cape Ann's travel weeks fill suites early, and the summer beach rules apply at home too
The weeks Cape Ann families leave town are the weeks everyone else does: school vacations, the Fourth of July, Labor Day weekend and the winter holidays. Members of the $700 unlimited daycare plan get priority on holiday overnight reservations; everyone else should book as soon as the dates are set and finish the evaluation well before then. The Pup Van collects and returns overnight guests for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so the dog can leave from home while you head for the airport.
If you are weighing a coastal trip with the dog, remember that summer beach rules are strict close to home as well. At the time of writing Gloucester closes Good Harbor to dogs from April 1 and Wingaersheek, Plum Cove and Cressy's from May 1, all until September 30, and Massachusetts state parks keep dogs off coastal beaches from May 1 through September 15 unless posted otherwise. A beach vacation in July is rarely a beach vacation for the dog.
