Collie grooming

Collie grooming in Gloucester, MA

There are two collies: the rough, whose coat the AKC counts among the most impressively showy in dogdom, and the sleek smooth. Both are double-coated and both shed, but on a timetable set by sex and spay status more than by the calendar. This page covers both coats, when the shed comes, and what each visit costs.

Rough or smooth

A rough collie wears a long, harsh coat and a full mane; a smooth collie carries the same undercoat under short hair

The AKC standard describes the rough collie's outer coat as straight and harsh to the touch, over an undercoat so soft, furry and close that it is hard to see the skin when the hair is parted. The coat is abundant everywhere but the head and legs, very full in the mane and frill, long and bushy on the hips and profuse on the tail. The smooth variety is judged by the same standard but has a short, hard, dense, flat coat, still with an abundance of undercoat.

That difference decides the groom. The AKC's grooming notes say smooth collies will not mat but still need their undercoat brushed out when they shed, while rough collies need attention to avoid mats, especially behind the ears and elbows. On the AKC's figures males weigh 60 to 75 pounds and females 50 to 65, so most collies sit in one of our two middle bands.

  • Rough: long harsh coat, full mane and frill, bushy hips
  • Smooth: short, hard, flat coat over the same undercoat
  • Both are double-coated, and both shed
  • Rough coats mat behind the ears and at the elbows

The trim

Full service on a rough collie tidies the feathering, hocks and ear tips and leaves the coat long

Full service adds a breed-specific or custom haircut to the bath. For a rough collie that is a neaten rather than a cut: the feet tidied, the feathering on the back of the forelegs evened, and the hair below the hock trimmed close, since the standard asks for smooth hind legs below the hock joint and notes that feathering there is removed for the show ring. The mane, frill, hips and tail are brushed out and left long.

The ears get attention too. The standard describes ears carried about three-quarters erect when alert, with the top quarter tipping forward, and folded back into the frill at rest. Fuzzy hair on the tips and edges blurs that outline, and our $10 face trim neatens the eyes, muzzle and ears between full grooms. A smooth collie rarely needs a haircut at all; its groom is the bath with Shed Release. For either coat, the AKC advises against shaving a double coat.

The shed

A collie sheds on its own timetable: once a year if spayed, after a heat if not, and around a male's birthday

The AKC's grooming notes for collies give an unusually specific schedule. Spayed females do a big shed once a year. Intact females shed about three months after their heat cycle, and males shed around their birthday. So the shed you are bracing for in April may arrive in August instead. Watch the dog rather than the calendar: tufts of soft undercoat lifting at the hips and behind the ears are the start.

Book the bath with Shed Release, $10, as the shed begins, and the loose undercoat comes out in the studio in one visit. Leave it, and on a rough collie the undercoat packs into mats behind the ears and at the elbows, the spots the AKC names. Dematting is $15 per 20 minutes on top of the visit. A smooth collie will not mat, but without a de-shed its undercoat still ends up on your floor.

Price by size

$75 for most collie baths, $110 for a rough collie's full service, and $65 or $85 for a small female

A male collie, 60 to 75 pounds on the AKC's figures, is in our 51-to-90 band: $75 for the bath and $110 for full service. A female of 50 to 65 pounds lands on either side of the line, so a 48-pound female pays $65 and $85 and a 58-pound female $75 and $110. Shed Release adds $10 to any of them, and the groomer confirms the band and the final price at check-in.

Nail clipping is $16, the face trim and the sanitary trim $10 each, and dematting $15 per 20 minutes when a rough coat has knotted. A smooth collie's usual visit is the bath with Shed Release, $85 for most males. Unlimited daycare members save 15 percent on grooming, and overnight guests on the Dogtown Classic bundle save 10 percent, so a groom before pick-up costs less.

At home

A weekly brush down to the skin keeps a rough coat free of mats; a smooth coat needs it in the shed

The AKC's fix for rough-collie mats is a weekly brushing down to the skin, which also keeps the coat and skin healthy. Work in sections through the mane, frill and hips, then comb behind the ears and at the elbows, where it catches first. A smooth collie needs less, but its undercoat still has to come out during the shed. The AKC adds that collies thrive on positive teaching methods, and that applies to standing for the brush at home.

Cape Ann winters are kind to a collie coat; the beaches are less kind. At the time of writing Good Harbor allows dogs on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31, and wet sand sits in the hip and leg feathering. Rinse with fresh water that evening and dry the coat before brushing. For a groom on a daycare day, the Pup Van collects in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way.

  • Rough coat: brush to the skin every week
  • Behind the ears and at the elbows first
  • Smooth coat: brush out the undercoat in a shed
  • Rinse salt and sand from the feathering the same day

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Does a smooth collie need grooming?
Less than a rough collie, but yes. The AKC notes that smooth collies will not mat, but their double coat still sheds and the undercoat needs brushing out during shedding periods. A bath with Shed Release, $75 plus $10 for most smooth collies, clears the shed in one visit, and nail clipping at $16 can be added.
Why did my collie start shedding in August?
Collie sheds follow the dog more than the season. The AKC says spayed females shed heavily once a year, intact females about three months after a heat, and males around their birthday. Book the bath with Shed Release when the undercoat starts lifting, whatever the month, and brush more often at home until it settles.
Do you trim collie ear tips?
The $10 face trim is a tidy around the eyes, muzzle and ears, and it neatens fuzzy ear tips between full grooms. Say at check-in how you like the ears to look. The carriage itself, three-quarters erect with the tip breaking forward in the standard, is set by the dog, not by grooming.
Rough or smooth: which costs more to groom?
Neither, by price. Both are charged by weight: $65 or $75 for a bath and $85 or $110 for full service. The difference is which service you need. A rough collie needs the full service tidy now and then and runs more risk of dematting; a smooth collie usually needs only the bath, with Shed Release in a shed.
